Congratulations to Maniek, Blue Leaf and S.N.N, and really congratulations to the whole gang of people who are very knowledgeable in video games OST. Thanks a lot for the organization.

And as last year, here's my debrief/rant about some songs I've got wrong.

***

Ah yes, the contest that reminds me my video game culture is so very small.

I'll blame it on the fact that I've stop being a follower of new games and technology ever since the year 2005, and even before that my game choice was rather limited at home. Well sometimes my friends still send me OSTs of games I haven't played but, I don't know, I can't click with a video game OST if it hasn't been hammered in my head for hours of gameplay it seems. I'm glad I fell in the traps at least, it says I can catch a familiar element (30 and 31 with Sonic, 60 with Mega Man, 84 with Touhou).

Very surprised to see a Tsuki Hime game featured here (52), I have read the manga a moment ago and liked it a lot, and my friend has showed me some interactive novel game about it.

Also what is this 26 song??? It's so very clearly the music theme from Il Padrino and I hate such a masterpiece ends up remixed into some jewel game. I've called it the Impostor lol.

To finish I'm also extremely frustrated that I couldn't figure 73 for the life of me. I knew the song, I was familiar with it and was trying to search.... But no. And now it's Deltarune. So you see, at least someone didn't get it #smrpg{sad}

Another fun bit is, I was trying to listen to some SMW ports, and also I was sure some Chrono Cross songs were featured, so I was spending time listening to Chrono Cross' OST. Oh well.
I'm so proud I got first place from the bottom! #tb{:)}

Fun fact: This was apparently one of the first songs ever ported to SMW, back in 2007, so clearly someone has very similar tastes as me. Anyway, I have to include at least one song from the Final Fantasy series, and this absolutely magical song needs to be heard. Probably one of my favorite tracks in the entire series, actually.

It was! In fact the only reason this one rung a bell is because I knew it was featured in the very first Keytastrophe demo. I thought it came bundled with the very first Addmusic, but I went through the old copy I have and couldn't find it, so either my files are incomplete or it was ported very slightly later?

also I guess my VGM repertoire is a strict subset of K.T.B.'s.

ngl, at least for me, this one wasn't as hard as the others (especially since I already knew a ton of the tracks firsthand and didn't need to double-guess myself in a lot of those), but there were some tracks that were actually pretty cool and that I actually wished I knew; here's some of them btw if you're curious:

here's a fun fact btw: the reason why I made that Thunder Cross port (the one that's currently in the waiting section) is specifically because I already guessed that one was a Konami arcade thing by the intro alone, but instead of the X-Men arcade game my mind immediately gravitated to Thunder Cross instead since it sounded similar and I wasn't familiar with the OST enough back then to know if it was from it or not... then I listened to the OST properly and pretty much became in love with a ton of the tracks, so I just ended up being busy with that instead; thanks for that :P

but yeah, honestly I love that fucking dissonant (and clearly an FM patch) feedback noise in the intro that sets up the whole song, along with the drum samples (heck, the samples in general honestly), it's such a brutal song and I love it

I feel robbed :') the one time I """"guess"""" an extreme song, and it's null and voided hahahaha

I'm shocked that there are so few correct guesses of the OneShot and Explorers of Sky songs.

3 out of the 3 games that I didn't know and checked out for possibly playing were from Sancles' picks. At that, of the music that I didn't already know that I vibed the hardest to, most were Sancles' too, with a smattering from the rest.

Ah, so you were the other guesser :P I could probably list the composer, title, context and, in the case of the building mode songs, performer of most songs in The Sims. Jerry Martin is an absolutely genius composer, and John R. Burr absolutely nailed the building mode performances. The game's soundtrack is just ridiculously good in general, better than it should be if I have to be honest, and there has been more than one occasion where I would gush about it in technical detail to my music-nerdy friends, who'd just laugh at the absurdity of me combining "The Sims" with comments about snare compression. Yea Yai Yo is simply one of the best themes in video game history, period. Don't at me.

Then you would be very surprised at how many times I've used tracks from this game in other contests, only for it to be found by absolutely nobody.

Your files aren't incomplete, here is the list of songs bundled with Carol's AddMusicE and that track's not one of them. Hm...

Doing some quick research into the original thread where the first AddMusic was discovered, it looks like SNN ported it around a week after AddMusic was found. Cool beans.

And I totally agree with you Exodust, Jerry Martin and John R. Burr are wonderful. The rest of the build themes from that game are some of my favorite tracks ever, even though I've never actually played that game.

Well, this post turned out to be a lot more link-filled than I expected. As a bonus, here is another beautiful John R. Burr song I found (not from a video game).

Also, thanks everyone who hosted the event! It's always fun to discover some great songs and specially, new games to play!

Can't believe I was the only one who guessed 69... Nice!

This was fun, albeit really difficult, haha. I scoured countless OST's trying to find the specific song I thought was from that series, often to no avail, so I guess it goes to show how limited my scope is in terms of all the deep cuts added here (or at least the genres I'm less familiar with).

I'm pretty stunned that only one person got this, to be honest. This was composed by one of the main composers for the Paper Mario series (Yoshito Hirano/Sekigawa), which is actually how I found out about the Fire Emblem franchise in the first place. I expected someone to guess “Paper Mario” for this due to the stylistic similarities - You can even hear the melody of the TTYD main theme in this! Yet, no one fell into that trap.

I didn't realize the composer for this game worked on Paper Mario as well, I guess Intelligent Systems likes using their composers for both series like with Yuka Tsujiyoko.

I know it was silly to guess this as the Composter since it was an extreme song, but that piano sample just sounded way too similar to SMW's for me to do otherwise, and I didn't know what tools the composer had at their disposal. Oh well, a learning experience is a learning experience.

#10 - it sounded too much like Touhou, I could tell from a mile apart
#22 - in my defense i have bought this game and left it on my "must play" list. i just haven't gotten around to it
#24 - "[very 8-bit. see if it's from shovel knight or some other recent indie game like it]" how tf did that count
#30 - i knew it sounds like palmtree panic past but i didn't even think it was an impostor song
#37 - never got that far in Downwell, but I have played the game before
#64 - this was a bold guess. how did i get it right
#69 - y'know, i have actually participated in a lot of questions back when this channel was active, so i should remember this song, but i don't think i ever bothered to submit a question
#73 - i bought undertale in 2016 and have still yet to play it. must be a new record or something
#99 - my notes were literally "[I'VE HEARD THIS ONE BEFORE. but I've completely forgotten where it is from by this point]". and yes, i have heard that song before and forgot about it completely. i've forgotten most of Tales of Symphonia at this point

99% sure that it was actually played live
Darn, so close to last this time #smrpg{haha}

Looking at the list, there's definitely a lot I haven't played or listened to before. I could have gotten better if I went through and researched or even listened harder (pretty surprised I missed Price), but I think I am quite content with the one-and-done this time. I don't think I could have made top 3 even if I tried hard, though.
Yeah, this page took me a good deal of time to load, especially since the comments regarding each song aren't present in the plaintext page, and I wanted to read them, but of course this causes my computer to lag like crazy...

Anyway, I guess 4th place for me is respectable, especially since I didn't have as much free time to go over the songs as I would've liked. Wow, Maniek really blew away the competition with that 120 score! Congratulations!

Oh, and while going over the songs, I noticed that number 33 said "Guessed by nobody"? But, I correctly identified this one (it helped that I recently played through it on Nintendo Switch Online's SNES library), and I was given credit for it in my score too. Was "Guessed by nobody" a mistake there?

Now for comments regarding some of the songs that I missed...

2 - Huh, I never thought to check Sonic CD prototypes.
3 - I never even knew about this Sonic fan game.
4 - D'oh, I didn't check Tyrian for this. My mind thought this sounded like a Genesis game, perhaps the menu of some sports game.
7 - Aw, my mind was at least right about this being a Genesis game, but I never thought to check Columns III.
10 - I checked a bunch of Touhou games, including many fangames, but I didn't know about Infinite Blade Pavilion. At least I got the Touhou series guess point.
15 - Yep, I fell for that trap, and my mind really thought it sounded like is was from a Tales or Star Ocean game. Baten Kaitos never came close to crossing my mind.
29 - Welp, my mind thought this might've been a Game Gear game, totally misleading me. (I doubt I would've figured it out anyway, though.)
31 - D'oh! I had guessed this one to be the composter. I did notice how it sounded a lot like a Green Hill Zone variant, and even searched for several versions of Green Hill Zone on YouTube, but did not find this particular one.
32 - Yet another one that I thought was a Game Gear game.
35 - Huh, I thought this one sounded really familiar to me, but I haven't played or seen Night Striker, I don't think. And, I didn't associate it with Suwako's Native Faith either.
36 - Pokémon never crossed my mind with this song. Welp.
40 - D'oh, that's one I could've known, since I've played that NES Flintstones game in the past, but that was a long time ago.
42 - Argh! I KNEW this one sounded familiar, but I just could not figure it out...
45 - That's one I probably should've been able to figure out. Oh, well.
49 - I thought this one sounded familiar to me too, but Killer Instinct didn't cross my mind at all here.
60 - D'oh, I did indeed think this sounded a bit like River City Ransom, and I checked various related games, but missed Super Dodge Ball.
72 - Argh... This is I think the one I missed that bothers me the most. I knew it sounded Genesis, and I did check Dynamite Headdy's soundtrack, and yet I still somehow missed it! I figured it out a little over a week after the deadline when it played in one of the levels during raocow's MaGMML playthrough.
77 - What, seriously? That song actually has an F-bomb in its name?
84 - D'oh! So, that Touhou-like one was indeed the composter. I actually did consider picking it as the composter too. If only the LEGO Green Hill Zone above didn't fool me...
86 - Yep, I thought that sounded like Kirby too.
89 - Nuts, I had checked the Seihou series while trying to figure out 84, but I wasn't focused on 89 at the time.
92 - I had thought this one sounded like one of Pokémon's clothing shops or something.
E2 - For some reason, this one had sounded familiar to me, but I don't think I'm familiar with Grinsea at all.
E6 - Sigh... I should've gotten this game for my dad while I had the chance, since I saw it at a local shop for $5, and I really wanted him to stop smoking...
I like how I did really well in this contest despite me not knowing half the songs.
bebn legg had a bunch of really good song picks - I liked learning about #10 being from a Touhou fangame, being the only one to guess #35 for the one reason he knew of the song, and how he even made a Touhou-style composter for this. bebn certainly deserves that high-five, and I think I might even consider him my senpai due to both this contest and all his obscure Touhou and Sonic ports. (I'll never be fooled by Len'en music - I'm familiar enough with the series that I actually find that JynX's style is a bit distinctive from ZUN's style, to the point where I can even see their style shine through in their older PC-98 remake soundtracks.)
Doctor No also gets kudos for getting me back into Kingdom of Loathing with his West of Loathing song pick - I stopped playing those games for a while after word got out in September 2019 about some scandals involving the games' creators (which I don't wanna talk about, BTW), but eventually I forgot about it, and hearing WoL music in this contest convinced me to try playing both those Loathing games again!
Oh, and why did my Sonic CD guess for #2 count as a series guess? Do you guys really count game prototypes as separate games altogether?
Kinda in hibernation for a while. I hope to be back in full swing soon.

Yeah, that was a decision that was made with uncertainty. I originally wanted to be nice and give full credit to anyone who just said "Sonic CD", but bebn made a good point that the people who specified more clearly deserve more credit. It wouldn't have ultimately mattered, though, since I don't believe that any of these grayer areas would have necessarily affected the final rankings.

Speaking of which, that reminds me of the debate between whether or not people should get credit for naming the song titles. Every time one of these contests roll around, there are always a handful of participants who just list out the name of the games, while there are other participants who carefully list out the name of the song / the in-game location where the song plays for every single track. Next time we have a VGM contest around here, I wonder if it would be worth awarding extra credit to those who get the song names, since anyone who goes into that much detail is also clearly doing more effort/research than those who don't?

Just a thought.

Haha, I'm glad you enjoyed my picks! I was worried I went overboard with my Touhou-adjacent picks, though I tried to include enough songs that were actually traps, and it seems to have worked for the most part. Also, you saw right through my selection reason for the Night Striker song, hehe.

On one hand, I love this idea because organization and precision is good. On the other, there's two issues. First, song title discrepancies would be an issue (if a track is unnamed, has conflicting names, etc.) Second, what would we do if someone guesses the game right, but the song wrong? It feels like it would get into an over-pedantic territory,

I have heard some songs from that franchise so far (they're amazing), but I didn’t know this one, so I had no other way but to guess what game its style was from. I found it very similar to Touhou series, but my expectations were low, and I didn’t think I would manage to guess the franchise, so I felt glad to see that I was right.

I call it “Magic Jewelry”, but I read a wrong spelling several years ago. A NES game menu (they have names like “30 in 1”, “50 in 1”, “58 in 1”, “76 in 1”, “400 in 1”…) had that game, and its name was…
MAGIC JEWELLY #smw{-_-2}

I played this game a lot when I was a little boy and now, I rarely do, but I feel like playing it. It’s very similar to Columns, which is very similar and I have played sometimes.

Honestly, I can't remember how I found this game

I remember how I did: Back in 2009 or 2010, I was watching some videos on YouTube about a NES game named Antarctic Adventure, which I played a lot then. I saw a thumbnail about a game which was very similar, called Penguin Adventure, and I clicked on it. I watched that video and I found it interesting, but I thought it was a NES game (it’s a game for MSX; I was wrong). I found it on a page, and I tried to play it there, but it ran excessively slow and heard awful. I think the reason was that I had Windows XP then because it runs quite well on Windows 7 and 10. Some years later, I realized that it was an MSX game. Nowadays, I play it sometimes and I haven’t gone further than level 8. Regarding Antarctic Adventure (NES), I have “finished” it a few times to date.
