Old-School Level Design Contest 2021 - Discussion

OLD - Level DesignOLDCDiscussion

A few questions:
-Will an entry be disqualified for not using the baserom/3 byte hex edit?
-Is there a minimum version of Lunar Magic with which the level has to be made?
-Can a level have more than 1 secret exit?
-Can a level use more than 2 (3 counting Yoshi) messages by stacking Display Message 1 sprite?
-Is using Old (not Super) GFX Bypass allowed?
-Does the checkbox for allowing to see the bottom row of tiles also count as LM3's Horizontal Level Mode?
Check out Team Hack Fix/Translations' thread full of fixed and translated SMW hacks!

So is it permitted to use palettes from one foreground to another foreground? Example: Cavern palette in grass fg.

This is fine to do as long as you're not editing the palettes themselves with #lm{pal}.

-You won't be disqualified, but please make sure your entry includes the hex edit, as it will make the judging process easier.
-You can use any version of LM so long as you follow all the rules.
-No, 1 secret exit (or 2 exits total) is the maximum.
-If you can do this without breaking any rules (which it sounds like you can), then that should be fine.
-If you mean the #lm{gfxby} icon, then that is allowed.
-I am going to say that it does fit under HLM, and thus cannot be used.

I would also like to reiterate that you should not actively be looking for loopholes, and if it appears your entry is doing so then that could lead to a disqualification.

No, Old GFX Bypass is another thing. Since LM 3.20 you have to enable the "Show Old/Obsolete Menu Items" checkbox in General Options and restart LM to use it and it's located under Level>Old GFX Bypass.

Does arbitrary code execution count as a loophole?

In that case, I will not be allowing the use of Old GFX Bypass. ACE would indeed be considered a loophole and is also not allowed.
is the "Set X/Y Position using Method 2" option for entrances allowed?
maks, you've been warned twice now for skirting around rules when entering contests, specifically to do with ace. if you yet again enter another contest that skirts various rules and will get you dqd, we're just gonna revoke your ability to enter contests permanently. participate in good faith, don't be a dick by asking 100 questions every single ldc to see what rules the hosts "forgot" to cover.
Is using Level Mode 11 allowed?
It allows you to use the level's transparency/background palette to completely alter every other palette using colour math without actually changing the palettes. BALLS from JUMP used it for example.

(rip my other userbars momentarily)

PROTIP: To really make an old-school level, use an older version of lunar magic.
Can't be disqualified for using forbidden features if the features aren't implemented yet.
#smw{;)}

That's what I'm gonna do again (if I enter), although last time I used lunar magic 1.00 but it was a bit too rough (no buttons, can't change object sizes with the mouse), so I'll instead use 1.51 or 1.63 this time idk.
I'm not kidding, if you enter the contest I really recommend you to try doing this with an older version. It's also fun to see how much the editor evolved since then.

Yup, both of these are fine.

I actually did consider making LM 1.63 a requirement, but felt it might've been too much to ask. Plus it's not the easiest thing to enforce.
is the "Custom time limit" option allowed?
Yup, that's perfectly fine.

One thing I want to point out is that; after patching in the base rom, I get this message:

Is that something I should worry about or ignore?

From what I can tell, everyone using the baserom has gotten this message. I'm not exactly sure why this happens, but according to people on Discord the baserom should still be fine to use. If you're not comfortable using it, though, I have provided the hex edit on its own if you want to patch it yourself.

I think I'll be fine. Considering it is just one level, I don't think it should be that big of a deal. I just wanted to know if it was something on my end or not.

Okay, whew. I was wondering if I patched it wrong or something when I got that message just now, but if everyone's having the message appear but it still actually runs fine, then I guess I have nothing to worry about.
What about unintended behavior of tiles? I remember there was a rule in OLDC 1 preventing it from using. But I don't see any rule about this in current OLDC. Is is allowed?

It's allowed.
I love the challenge this contest gives you, being restricted to pure level design. First part of my level is already done #tb{:p}

Wow I haven't even started thinking about my level yet and there are 12 submissions already?
It seems that when some people are limited to the most basic form of Super Mario World, it's less time-consuming to come up with an entire level. Don't fret though, there are still two whole weeks until the deadline for submissions!
What is a Lunar Magic, and can I eat it?

Yeah, I like to take my time to perfect my levels.

Also, are we allowed to use switch palace blocks?

YY-CHR > Photoshop.
Yup, you can use Switch Palace blocks.
The base ROM patch doesn't seem to insert the infinite lives for some reason. (Usually, there should be an infinity symbol next to it instead of 5.)
