Hi everyone, this is my first post here even though I've had this account for a while. I mostly hang around the Talkhaus (raocow's forum) these days, but I'd like to try to become active in other communities too. When I was in high school I used to love posting on forums, and I kind of miss the experience. Speaking of which, I used to be very active on numerous video game ezboards from about 2000 to 2005. Anyone here remember ezboard? Please let me know... I might remember you! For what it's worth, I used to go by Verch Torcitec on the internet.

Anyway, I've had the sudden urge to start hacking SMW after watching raocow's replay of ASMT. Literally began messing around in Lunar Magic about two weeks ago, only worrying about the pure vanilla stuff. I noticed that there's an Old-School Level Design Contest coming up, which seems perfect for a beginner like me to enter. Let's see if I'll have the confidence to actually submit something.

Greetings, it is nice to see a post from you. Better late than never~! I hope you continue to enjoy your time on this site~! ^.=.^

Welcome. I always think it's funny to look at accounts that have been active for years and yet have zero posts, so it's cool to see one actually post!

Hello! I'm June (or Soapstone, if you want), and I'm from the UK.

I've always been interested in old games and computery stuff, which then inevitably lead into ROM hacks. I've always wanted to make some but never got around to doing much, and I've also always liked the idea of forums but have never really been active in any, so hopefully both those things can change!

A lot of my free time is spent playing games, listening to music or making it. My tastes change quite a bit but right now I'm listening to a lot of Tally Hall and Neutral Milk Hotel. I'm a decent keyboard player and sort of know bass guitar. I feel like I'd enjoy making music for SNES games if I spent the time to learn how.

Looking forward to finally being active here!
Welcome to SMWC, June. #ab{:)} It's always nice to have new musicians around here (and I love Neutral Milk Hotel)!

Thanks all, and welcome to the new user above me! Creating accounts that don't get used until years later is a bad habit of mine.

I finished laying out my first SMW level using cement blocks, and I just need to pretty it up with actual landscapes. Trying to keep things strictly vanilla (no Map16 manipulation or even Super GFX Bypass), and it's challenging. If I want feedback on just a single level, can I still post it in the Works in Progress forum? Or is that just reserved for multi-level hacks?
Making a thread for a single level isn't really worth it. There's already a thread where it's safe to do so. There's no problem with posting some more levels of your hack there, really, until you acknowledge you have enough progress to create a thread for your WIP hack.

Not sure why you'd like to keep things super simple. Is this due to your lack of skills or just a preference?

Learning new things will allow you to do more things and you'll be less limited that way. No one really forces you to make a pure vanilla hack (except you're taking part in Old-School Level Design Contest (or OLDC in short) and if you wish to participate in any future contest, submit something you haven't shown before, but it's safest to start making your level when the contest starts).

It's tough to make a completely vanilla hack that satisfies possibly most people and this undertaking is really for experienced hackers. Many people have made truly vanilla romhacks, but they're nothing special for most part.

Anyways, welcome, PSI Ninja!
I have a Discord server as well! (by joining, you agree to the rules)

Basically, I believe in peace and bashing two bricks together.

Thanks for the advice. I imposed these restrictions on myself (at least in the beginning) because I thought it would help me to better retain and understand what limitations exist. But I caved in and started editing Map16 tiles anyway, haha. I prefer to apply what I've learned little by little, because otherwise I think I would be overwhelmed by features. I'm definitely not averse to the more advanced tools and techniques, and I'm looking forward to going deeper soon.
Hello all. No experience with ROM hacking, or even playing them for that matter, but quite enjoy watching playthroughs. Interested in messing around with Lunar as opportunity presents itself but I acknowledge that I have a great deal of general knowledge that I need to amass.

Welcome to the site! There's a lot to learn with LM but don't get too overwhelmed, always just take things one step of the time.

I hope you enjoy your stay here! ^.=.^

Just realized this thread was a thing 3 months after joining. Guess I might as well try it out.

Hey all! I'm a college student studying Software Engineering, though funnily enough that has nothing to do with my current interest in the site; rather, I'm a big music guy who plays too many instruments, and was drawn in by the allure of porting songs using the SMW soundfont like many others before me. Currently I try to make ports either when there's an event or when I'm not caught up with school, and am hoping to polish my skills with time. Right now I've got my sights set mainly on Fire Emblem music, the since prior to my arrival there were a total of only 5 ports from the franchise, but there are a number of songs from other series that have sparked my interest as well. Hopefully I'll be able to make some cool stuff that people can enjoy!

(Also shoutouts to Hat Kid for repping Genealogy with the Lachesis pfp, that was a pleasant surprise)
embed fail!!

Hello! I guess I may as well introduce myself. I'm Dusk and I do a lot of work with music. I'm also a Mario Kart time trialer for every game in the series. (including MK8DX since I have it now)
Welcome Dusk! I hope you have a great time here!

Hello SMWC! o/

I'm not new to the site, but it's been a very long time since I was an active community member, but I eventually stopped making SMW hacks for a while, only to come back for a couple weeks and vanish again. I joined in the summer of 2006 after watching a tas of Demo World TLC, I was only 12 at the time. I was pretty addicted to SMW hacking back that lasted about 3 years. I disappeared from the site probably sometime around 2011 and came back in 2014 for a small project I never finished and still didn't unfortunately. I do recognize some old names, but I would like to keep my previous aliases to myself.

What have I been doing while I was away? Mostly just playing other video games, but also growing up and just life in general can be a lot sometimes. I also recently in the last couple years got into speedrunning, with games like SMW(of course I had too), and Metroid Zero Mission; but most recently would be Pikuniku which I'm the world record holder for.

I came back because I always found myself wanting to do romhacking over the years, but I just never had the time for it. I recently started talking to my partner about it and we both got inspired to work on a project together! I always wanted to get into the technical side of it, like learning ASM and writing/porting songs; a lot of my ideas were usually not doable because I couldn't create them myself and I didn't want my entire project to hinge on someone else's skills/generosity.

I missed SMWC :')
