KLDC 2021 - DISCUSSION

This thread is for open discussion about KLDC as a whole. Please feel free to create your own thread in this sub-forum for discussion of your own individual entry.

Judges will not be here to see your sharing of levels and resources. They will be able to see the #KLDC-Discussion channel on Discord, so limit sharing information about your entries there.
I'm not a doctor.

If you are looking for a quick and easy way to enable infinite lives, use this hex edit:

Code
org $00D0D8 : NOP #3

I'm not a doctor.

Can we use any baserom as long as it has infinite lives?
Yes, the only required patch/asset is infinite lives.
I would like to ask a question the rules couldn't answer. I worked on my level a few weeks before the start of this contest, and worked on the ASM from way longer than that. While I did make the ASM for general purposes I worked on the level specifically for kldc.
I would like to know if this could cause penalities and/or disqualification, while it would be a bit disheartening I would be willing to make another level from scratch. Thank you for listening and have a good day.
I suck at ASM and AMK

You level can be made anytime. If it's a 2 year old level, it's fine. If you make it during the contest it's fine.
Plus, no one would have known anyway
Super Mario Pants World
Luigi's Lost Levels
New Super Mario Pants World
Luigi's Lost Levels 2 - Back With A Revenge
Luigi's Lost Levels 3 - Electrik Boogaloo
VLDC12 - 72HoKaizo#1
Can we use weird insane glitches? Like double yoshi
And is it allowed to use more exits?

There are 2 base ROMs in RULES AND SUBMISSIONS you can use? You can work with any base ROM you want so long as you use the required patch.

Ummm, judges are here and they might suspect they posted the old level if they haven't said during submission they'd restructured it contrary to what was said just recently?
If you haven't told literally anyone you'd started the level, then cool.

Yes, no matter how weird the glitches are, make sure the player will understand them. Just keep in mind they should be reasonably done in real time, though.
And you can only use no more than 2 exits. It's in the rules.
I have a Discord server as well! (by joining, you agree to the rules)

I just want to be honest from the get-go. If it's considered against the rules to work on a level In advance I won't do it, even if I can get away with it

hello, I have never designed kaizo before but would like to try my luck for the first time through this contest, does anyone have good resources to recommend to help on kaizo level design for someone that only knows how to level design "normal" levels? thanks
i think its against the spirit of the contest to submit a level you made before the contest was going. that being said, using older tech / asm / gimmicks / ideas and stuff you've made before is totally valid.

also re: glitches, you should be able to use whatever glitches you like, but keep in mind the judges or players may not be knowledgeable of all these glitches off the bat. i'd suggest finding a way to introduce it or inform about the glitches in a way that works for your levels while being considerate of folks who don't know about those glitches.
Darn. One level already
It's easily the best thing I've done
So why the empty numb?
Soon (TM)
Windowless ride, feeling alive
Are you alive or just breathing?
I've never made a Kaizo level in my life

Let's do this
Check out my WIP romhack!

I'm literally going in with this exact energy too, should be quite interesting to see how things turn out. #smrpg{mlem}
What is a Lunar Magic, and can I eat it?
First timer and I am super excited for this, have a level idea that had no place in my hack, now I can develop it for KLDC. Can't wait to see what everyone comes up with!
I've got some time off work and feel pretty creative at the moment so I'll be tossing my hat in the ring.
I'm hoping from what I've seen over the years with how Kaizo level design has evolved that I can make something enjoyable even if it doesn't win or do too well compared to more seasoned veterans of the genre.

Good Luck everyone. It'll be fun seeing what everyone makes! #smrpg{y}
The rules state that your level cannot be over 500 SMW seconds, much like the VLDC11 rules. However, does this also include the secondary VLDC11 rule of setting the timer to 0 / hiding the timer? If not, how do judges plan to enforce this rule? Will it just be based on the feel of the length of the level, or at the judge's own discretion?

Additionally, good luck to everyone who enters! Last KLDC had some really great levels, and with all the new hackers on the scene this year, I'm super curious about what'll be submitted.
I was gonna ask the same thing, as I want to remove the timer in my level for aesthetic purpose (remove the whole status bar in fact).

Three SMW seconds is equal to 40 frames = 2 real seconds.
Can we assume then that a level should be able to be beaten in a maximum of 5 minutes 33 seconds (500 SMW seconds = 333.33 real seconds) ?
