Our step into the future - SMWC2 Open Beta

Question, in the demo link there's this at the top of the page :

Is it a custom search function for SMWC2 or just a google search bar (which add site:smwcentral.net when searching or something like that)?

It's a Google search bar.

Same for the language, does it launch the website with google translate? If yes are the languages available dependent of the web browser (as I only have choice between english and français)?

This changes interface language only, as in stuff like text language on main page, menu buttons and so on. It doesn't translate user-provided content.
with no offense meant to the people working on this: "modern web design" = absolutely awful to me and also usually is much slower on every device i've ever used despite all claims to the contrary

at least this doesn't look unusable or like it outright removes stuff like most web design changes do so... good luck
Very very very shortly, this drab, workaday world and everything in it will be changed forever! Follow us into the golden country, into the empire of the senseless!

None taken, and I think there's not much to worry about in that regard. SMWC2 is not meant to be "modern web design" in the sense of current design trends, not least because it's been eight years in the making. It's really just a fresh coat of paint!

If you're thinking of full-screen headers, splash images, big typography, minimalist illustrations, pages full of Javascript, animations everywhere, lots of whitespace and big flat buttons, cookie banners and a questionable user experience, then don't worry, SMWC2 will be none of that.

The goal isn't to revamp everything and move things around for the heck of it - it's to make the things on the site look cleaner and less cramped, and to make use of technology that wasn't reliable when the site was made (such as not using tables for everything). In fact I think the HTML ends up smaller in the end because it's no longer tables galore! I've been using SMWC2 for a year now and haven't noticed any annoyingy slow loading times.

This homepage is going to be "Super Polished World"! ;) looking forward to use it!
Heck YES!!!

Now I can finally get outta that dystopian Craigslist world that could've ever imagine. Got my fingers crossed!

For those of you who aren't currently participating in the beta, there is an option for a 2006 Nostalgia theme running in SMWC2. It's just that you can't see it without being in the beta, so let me show you a picture of the main page with it applied. It looks like this: (click for full size)

So, if you were gonna miss the classic default site theme, don't despair because we have you covered. While we said that not all themes were going to make the conversion to SMWC2 at launch, this is one theme we knew we couldn't do without. While it won't be the site's default any longer, the option will remain, keeping that classic old web feel while running on a more modern codebase.
Thanks, now my old-fashioned soul can rest.

Wow, the 2006 theme looks great! Glad to see that converted to SMWC2

Awesome, that's exactly what I wished for.
This project looks nice,
I particularly like the fact that content will be displayed on the main page all categories mixed. Now I can see the latest submitted sprite or patch while listening to the trendy music spc (supported on the demo site which was very cool).

I like the new skin but I'm also a fan of the older one, which comes back often in my skin choice. The current skin choice actually is huge.

The forum does not seem to changed in its core but it sure looks good.

The questions I am wondering, will there be any changes in database's research and sorting tools, too? For example I thought it would be nice to display the submission date of content (replaces the moderation date), the username of the moderator who accepted it maybe; and other research filters as so to calculate fun stats. I wanted to assess which of my ports got rated most successfully by evaluating the ratio of number of downloads versus date of validation but it was somewhat flawed. And before validation date, some downloads occur too. It would also be good to have an option to download a .csv file after a research filter is applied, as so to keep it on a computer.
Changes like the ones you mention are maybe possible, but they'd be outside the scope of converting the site to SMWC2. They would be considered future suggestions if anything. So, hold on to those ideas and maybe post them in Issue Tracker as a suggestion thread later on.

First, the new design will be enforced for every page currently converted to SMWC2 (see the previous heading for a list), while the other pages will continue to use their legacy designs. After this point, there will be no way to opt out of the new designs. The feedback we receive from this open beta will help us determine when exactly this will happen.

thanks for the feedback
"not liking forced change" is enough feedback in and of itself, dont have to be snarky about it

I know there are reasons why you wont offer the possibility to stay on V1, just know that there will be people unhappy with that no matter how perfect V2 is
That's what the 2006 Nostalgia scheme is there for.
It's easily the best thing I've done
So why the empty numb?

i think if people are cynical enough to think that we run our site like facebook, twitter, or the myriad of other sites that force changes with no regard for what the community thinks i'm not quite sure why they're around this site to begin with. this entire thread should show that we are intending to be receptive during this enire process.

"i don't want change" is not feedback. there's nothing we can garner from that whatsoever.

furthermore, as koopster stated, there is gonna be a 2006 nostalgia scheme to help bridge the gap for the folks who prefer the old scheme. if that doesn't do it for ya, suggest ways in which smwc2 can actually work for you.
Would it be possible to Have the C3 Throwback theme? That is my favorite theme.

I'm wondering about this. We just got this theme very, very recently, and it was the first theme that actually made me switch off the OG theme, which I had previously used for the first 10 years.

STELLA!
i believe that currently we are launching with the smwc2 theme and the nostalgia theme, and telinc himself won't be revamping any old themes - but, i believe we would welcome y'alls contributions to porting old themes you'd like to see, and maybe we could convince some of our coding-savvy staff to help port some important old themes to smwc2.

is there any other themes you all feel would be important for smwc2 to have / ones that stand out amongst the bunch, aside from the throwback theme?
Well, I'm not really sure it's notable or important other than being among the oldest themes on the site, but I'd support the Winter theme being ported. It's pretty much the only one I've ever used.
