I'm canceling one of my hacks ... but in its place will be 2 more.

So you guys may know about this My Little Pony-themed hack I'm working on called Super Alicorn Sisters: Return of the Tantabus. Well, I'm not satisfied with the story I came up with, so I decided to cancel it. Well, perhaps "cancel" isn't the right word. I'm going to keep the levels and world I thought up of, but I'm going to completely change the story and make the hack far more ambitious. I'm not quite ready to reveal this hack yet.

However, here's one I am going to reveal. It'll be a My Little Pony-themed hack called A Night in the Dreamscape. A character named Princess Luna is one of the 2 rulers of the country My Little Pony takes place in. She's in charge of raising and lowering the moon every dawn and dusk. She also creates the night sky's stars and enters the dreams of the people in the country to get rid of their nightmares. This hack will focus on that last point. It will be a collection of levels with no story, and you'll be able to do them in any order. Due to the nature of the hack, it won't really have an ending. I could just keep adding levels until the maximum of 96 is reached.

The game's levels will be dreams, and you as Princess Luna will have to destroy the source of the dreamer's nightmare. However, because the game's levels will be dreams, dreams aren't really fixed. They morph a lot and are just your imagination. With this in mind, I'm going to use the SNES's mosaic registers to make the levels look like this.

(Mario isn't there because I disabled the player graphics routine.)

Do you guys like this idea? I discovered that on accident. I was working on a hack a year and a half ago and was having problems. That was what happened due to one of these problems. I loved that effect, so I'm deciding to intentionally invoke it for dream levels and other surreal levels in my hacks.

However, I haven't really been able to work on it because I've been waiting for anonimzwx to release his Dynamic Z update this C3. This is because the player graphics will be HUGE. The player will normally look like this,

which could be done with the previous Dynamic Z version, but she'll be able to be powered up to look like this, which will require the new version he just released.

However, I do have a video of me moving around the over world.

So what do you guys think of this hack concept? Do you guys like it?

Interesting. I still need to finish the final seasons of the TV show so I know what's what.
It's an interesting hack design idea.
I honestly dunno how a MLP game would play.
Please pardon the eye.
this is pretty good the player sprites look amazing good im not much of a fan about the mosaic effect that you said you were gonna use in the hack but luck making this hack.
This is my non existent layout I plan on adding one soon.. or never

I have a discord server, feel free to join if you want
Wow! This player sprite is completely insane... Wonder what kind of changes that will make to the hitbox, the different sprites, etc... Pretty sure my memory of the 16x16 Mario will kick in any moment.

About the concept of dream worlds and levels, I dig it a lot, actually one of my former cancelled romhack projects was talking about a dream world, so I am glad. In the gif I do find the mosaic effect ok, but I'm not sure in actual game play. My point of comparison would be lit/high Yoshi in YI's spore levels for example: I was not able to handle the effect for too long.

Also the map and the soundtrack are gorgeous so far.
Not gonna lie, the mosaic effect looks awful. The SNES mosaic effect is made to work only with itself really, not with scrolling. You can do things like up and down the pixelation level but scrolling it at the same time? Nuh uh, this hurts my eyes.

The animation on the player sprite is insane though! It looks seriously impressive, I hope you can get it working in-game. Custom player characters are always cool #smrpg{<3}

allow shy guy emojis in post footers you cowards!
For dream-like environments, I think that you'd be better off making a new palette (maybe of like purples, pinks, and whites) and using some wavy HDMA effects. Things of that quality. It's all well and good to find inspiration from mistakes, but this mosaic effect doesn't look right - I'd say it's best use if you had to make use of it is in a very bad nightmare.

The overworld and player sprites are extremely top-notch however! Especially the walking animation - the legs can smoove. However, I'd adjust her wings a bit so that they don't fidget around while walking; a bit of motion is nice, but when they move one pixel around and nothing else does, it's just a bit weird.

Other Submissions of mine!
Well, while I was at work today, I had a brain wave. I originally planned on making this hack be a collection of levels, but then I thought, "How about I make it a Metroidvania instead?" Would you guys like that?

The game world will be structured almost exactly like Kirby and the Amazing Mirror and Super Smash Bros. Brawl's Great Maze. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl's Great Maze, all of the game's levels are combined into one giant map. Well, in my new concept for this hack, all of the dreams would be similarly connected, by doors and such.

In the hack, you'll be able to press Start + Select to return to the over world map at any time. Dying will also send you there. Initially, only one dream will be available, Celestia's, but, in each dream will be a big switch like the ones in Kirby and the Amazing Mirror. Pressing one will unlock that dream on the over world map allowing you to quickly enter that dream's switch room. Pressing the switch will also give you a map of the dream, which you'll be able to view by pressing a certain button on certain screens.

The goal of the game will be to enter the nightmare area of each dream and destroy the cause of the nightmare.

Does that game concept sound good or should I just make a collection of levels like I originally planned?
