Hello, friends, and welcome to my thread! As usual, I've been porting things on a whim over the past 6 months, and hoarding them as I worry about fixing tiny details, only to say screw it and show everything off for C3! This time, we have 16 ports with .txt and .spc and all, as well as 1 SPC-only port, as well as 1 non-SMW original song I rushed out over a weekend for fun.
This thread contains creations made in 2020, but looking through all the silly GIFs I have saved on my phone, I thought I'd give the thread a 2007 aesthetic.
Some general comments: I recently got some new earbuds and can actually hear things correctly now, so I feel like my port mixing is much less muddy than it used to be. I've lately also gotten a newfound affinity for @5; it's such a lovely-sounding instrument, and so versatile too. Finally, I've been finding myself porting by ear much more; as tedious as I find it, it's both a good skill to practice, and it's nice not to have to worry about whether some MIDI you found is accurate or not, or even exists in the first place.
Without further ado,
The songs we have this time around have a big focus on Touhou and Sonic fangames, with a few official songs mixed in as well. Also three Knuckles' Chaotix songs that y'all have heard in my contest entries.
Here is the list:
Sonic Time Twisted - Attraction Attack Zone (Future)
Sonic Time Twisted - Attraction Attack Zone (Past)
Originally intended for my VLDC level before it changed direction completely, these are probably my favourite songs from Sonic Time Twisted, a really neat Sonic fangame that plays like a more coherent Sonic CD. I initially ported the Future version for fun, then the Past version for what my VLDC level was going to be, then used neither after the level became what it ended up being. :P Also, the past version made me realize I'm very Not Good at transcribing organs, but hopefully what I did manages to be accurate enough, heh.
Rhythm Heaven Fever - Tap Trial
Mustard Motordrive
Touhou Seirensen ~ Undefined Fantastic Object - At the End of Spring
My three solo Superfamicompo entries. Tap Trial is a disorganized mess (the sample folder has more samples than it needs lol), doesn't loop, and I dislike some of the samples I used, but I figure I'd still dump it here for anybody who wants to use it. Mustard Motordrive is an original song that started out as a discount version of Stardust Speedway (Present) (JP) but then turned into a sort of chaotic song that keeps changing mood. At the End of Spring is generic Touhou.
Knuckles' Chaotix - Combination
Knuckles' Chaotix - Midnight Greenhouse
Knuckles' Chaotix - Seascape
The first two were ported for me and E-man's VLDC12 level after it changed direction, and Combination also appeared in my 72hoKaizo entry's practice mode room. Knuckles' Chaotix has such good music, and I honestly want to port the entire OST, but baby steps I suppose. Both Seascape and Combination have multiple instrumentations that can be selected.
Lyle in Cube Sector - Heidi #7
I've liked this song forever, but only found out its name like last year. So naturally, I decided to port it. I couldn't decide on instrumentation though, so you can change the parameters and get like 8 different combinations.
Mrs. Estacion - Setting Off ~ Departures Dream
Touhou Kikaisen ~ Adventures in Inferno - Going Down the Road to Yomi
Touhou Kaijingu ~ Deified Submarine Palace - The Shrine Built in the Sea
Touhou Tenryuuguu ~ Heavenly Gathering of Clouds - Romantic Tour ・ Dan-no-ura
Four Touhou fangame/fan music album songs that I've been enamored with forever, especially at the peak of my Touhou weeb phase in like 2016. I started Departures Dream like last year but lost motivation because I could not transcribe it correctly, until I came back to it a few weeks ago (turns out my old earbuds were just really crappy and didn't pick up the bass correctly), and I'm glad I finished it now rather than in the past, since I feel like I did it much more justice than I could have last year. Going Down the Road to Yomi was ported on a whim over a weekend in like November when it got stuck in my head. The Shrine Built in the Sea was a nice experiment in seashore noises, and has two noise channels playing at once as a result (oops); I don't love the song enough to do it all by ear (especially given how complex that piano gets, oh boy), but somehow I had the MIDI for it stashed away, so I ported it. Finally, Romantic Tour I've also loved since like 2015 and used to listen to while on the bus, and never did I think I'd be porting it to SMW 5 years later.
Sonic Robo Blast 2 - Deep Sea Zone Act 1
SPC only for the moment, as it was done for something that's not released yet.
Rapina Bros. - Reach to the Top
Alex Lee - Take It
Both songs featured in Sonic The Next Level, a grandiose hack of Sonic 1. The former's the invincibility theme in the game, and I remember getting out of bed on a crisp, early December morning where it was snowing, and transcribing the song instead of doing my job lol. Meanwhile, Take It plays in act 2 of the hack, and is also infamously the fake R2 music from Sonic CD. The port is mildly incomplete since I didn't bother adding in the "Come on!" sample the original has, but maybe I'll go back and add it at some point.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II - Sylvania Castle Zone Act 3
Some Sonic hack got this song stuck in my head so I ported it in like an evening hehe.
Vanilla Peak
Oops, I forgot to upload this one. This a short, snowy overworld theme I composed for another user's entry to a MFGG contest. I tried to keep it "authentic" to SMW by not using custom ADSR.
Listen to them all here!
That's not all! I had a dream about Sonic CD having some unused fairy-y desert level with a name like "Sand Dianthla Zone", and then one of my friends decided to make a Sonic Robo Blast 2 Kart map out of it, so I offered to make the music for it! You can see below to listen to it! In short, it's a song based on an SRB2 Kart map based on a dream I had.
The zone's icon looked something like this in my dream:
I'm not sure where to host this (I might put it on YouTube eventually) but here's a direct link to the song for now.
I guess that's all from me. Have a lovely C3, a lovely weekend, a lovely day, and a lovely year!
