Hack -1 released, Hack 1 2 3 preview

Full Hack ReleaseVideo/Trailer

Like many others, I've had a ton of time on my hands due to the pandemic. This is my fifth Hack release since September. #smw{:D}

I started this one on New Years Day and finished it in 5 days.

Hack -1 is an almost entirely vanilla gimmick Hack. The only custom resources used were the Retry Patch, title screen logo and some other miscellaneous minor patches and hex edits. Everything else, including the levels themselves, was built entirely within Lunar Magic alone with no outside resources.

I haven't submitted the hack yet so this can also serve as a testing thread for any feedback. Definitely don't consider this my best work as I completed it in 5 days, but hey, I've been bored af.

I think you're starting to run out of ideas with these names. :P

Anyways, it's interesting you're going the vanilla route with this one. Given the chocolate nature of the other entries, I'm curious to see what tricks you'll pull given the limited nature of the stock SMW gameplay. I'll have to give it a try once I get the chance!

Nice work! :)

You did a fantastic job with this hack :D It's impressive how such good hacks can be made without a lot of external resources. I especially liked the 'floor is lava' gimmick. It was very creative.Free counters!
The floor is lava part was very creative
This is a really good hack considering it was made in only 5 days. Nice job! #w{=D}

Although I think it could be more polished in the presentation and in the level design of some levels, specially in Wonton Soup. It's way too long and unforgiving, I think if you divided the level in two segments separated by midpoints it would be more fun to play. Also, since this has a retry system I think it would be better if you just removed the life system, the game over screen can get kinda annoying after some time.

Yea I can add a midpoint to Wonton Soup.

As for the lives system, I'd rather keep them in for the coin/Dragon Coin/1-Up Mushroom aspect of the hack, but I can increase the amount of default lives. Would 20 be better? 30? Or something else?
I'll probably just wait for the finished release.
I am looking forward to this though! (And playing the other hacks I haven't gotten around to yet.)
Please pardon the eye.
Whoa, you are just churning out hacks these days. Glad you found something to spend your time with! #tb{:)}

This is either the gimmickiest vanilla hack or the vanilla-est gimmick hack I've ever seen, not sure which. At a couple of points I forgot I wasn't playing a full-on chocolate hack, haha.

Also, that was quite a challenge! I admit I had to resort to rewinds.

Any particular parts you thought were too difficult and could use adjustments?

Mhm, one place that comes to mind is the level where you have to juggle the mushroom, especially the part with the piranha plants and the subsequent platforms over pits. Also the part in the first level where you're on a P-switch timer, although that wasn't as much of an issue after I knew what to do.

Maybe rewinding to an unfortunate spot made these extra difficult, so do take this with a grain of salt. #tb{''}

Added a midpoint to that level, so hopefully it makes it a bit more reasonable.

Sorry for the late answer! Oops.
Yeah that makes sense. I think like 15 lives would be a great balance of not being tiresome while still giving the player a reason to get the collectables.
This is a cool hack but how the hell do you make so many hacks so fast?

I feel many users share this sentiment over the past year.
Anyways its always great to see you still working and making small hacks. They are always filled with creative ideas and seeing how this is pretty much super vanilla it'll be interesting to see what you have come up.
