Sweet Vanilla

Full Hack ReleaseScreenshots

I unstrategically posted this in the WIP forum two days ago, since I was unsure whether or not it was worthy enough to present for C3. And even though I've already submitted it for moderation, I suppose that taking advantage of the occasion might just get me some input for what I've been working on for the past 4 months in the event that it flops.

This is a hack that I made 9 years ago. Back then, it was a really bland hack with hardly any custom features. However, I recently came across it again, and thought it would be nice to remaster it. Hence this.

This hack's got 80 exits, 10 worlds.

I hope you like it!
This looks pretty neat! I've seen a few people this C3 remastering their older hacks, which I think is pretty cool. It looks like there's all kinds of stuff going on in the hack, so I'm definitely gonna check it out.
I'm....curious to say the least. I might try this one sometime.
Please pardon the eye.
Oh wow, this really does look sweet!
definitely gonna give it a try.
This hack seems fun to play and i really like the aesthetics here, i can almost see which hack inspired you.

This is really impressive and it looks like a ton of effort went into it. I'm too busy to play it myself right now, but I'll definitely look for vids of it! Good job! #tb{:j}

Just played a bit of this yesterday on my 3ds before going to sleep.
I reached worlds 3 & 4 in the split section of the map and its been an excellent experience so far, the levels are fun, its not too dificult, there's the top secret areas styled houses to get more powerups and the level design is really solid.

I would just like to give a feedback that this hack needs just a bit more of testing & polishing as I had run into a few issues during my playthrough, for that I sugest putting it on the testing section inside the works in progress so people can beta-test it and give you feedback on issues that must be solved.

Now for me I'll start with the main issue first since it lies with the level design itself.

Now I must say, the level design IS really good so far, but there's an single issue that kinda ruins it: Item babysitting & softlocks.
I dont know what the intention was with this kind of design but nearly every level has an section that goes like this: You run into a an wall of brown blocks and must find a p-switch elsewhere to get past it, the problem is this create lots of item babysitting sistuations that just get repetitive, now they are pretty short and it would be a cool gimmick if it was used for 2 or 3 levels during the entire game, but nearly every level I played so far had an section like that.
And the second problem that is present on these sections are softlocks since the P-switches are pretty much always inside a block and they only spawn once in most levels, which means if you fail to get past the brown block wall or lose the p-switch you will just be softlocked and forced to die unless there's an secret entrance somewhere in the level.
A reset pipe or door would instantly fix that, but in my opinion the hack would be really fine without these sections, the levels are long and well designed enough to stand out on their own without them.

The third issue is a minor one and can be easily fixed, you just forgot to disable the vertical scroll on Castle 2 and it makes the layer 3 water get in the way, its easily fixed on lunar magic with the option "no vertical scroll".

The only other issue i had other than these was that the hdma would flash from time to time, but I think that its mostly my emulator fault since snes9x on the 3ds is a bit outdated.

Great job so far, Im loving your hack.

Thanks for playing and have fun!

Looks potentially decent. I'll have to give this one a try.

I'm working on a hack! Check it out here. Progress: 64/95 levels.

allow shy guy emojis in post footers you cowards!
The huge amount and variety of screenshots immediately makes me think "oh man, this is professional". I love the graphical style you got - it's really fun and colorful, and a nice blend between SMW hack and official Mario game aesthetic.

Also, I thought 9 years ago was the dark ages but it was only 2012-ish. aaaa time

Thanks! I strive to imitate the design example set by hacks like Aeon's Lunar Legends, the VLDCs,
and of course The 12 Orbs. #smw{;)}

Thanks! Yeah, I had mistakenly placed this full release on the WIP forum as well a couple days ago out of indecisiveness, so I'll definitely be checking that out once C3 is over to see if I get more input through there. I anticipate to use this in case the hack doesn't pass moderation.

Item babysitting & softlocks.

I definitely see what you mean. To be honest, I placed a lot more emphasis on face-lifting the game itself that I didn't actually make significant changes to the level layout and puzzles in it (That is, if you even consider item babysitting a puzzle gimmick, lol). Personally, when it comes to levels I design nowadays, I try holding myself to a higher standard, but of course we're talking about a hack I designed when I was like 15 back in 2012, haha. (Still, doesn't excuse sucky design).

I definitely see your point, though. Will note this if the hack doesn't pass moderation and I need to reupload.

About the softlocks, though, I had thought that I had skimmed through the game enough to identify which areas needed reset doors, since I'm certainly NOT a fan of restarting levels by dying if I get stuck on a puzzle. I'll have a look at it again to polish that up.

Heheheh. I had a feeling this might've caused problems. I had intended the flooding effect to rise with the scrolling, but upon reflection this might be cumbersome. I should probably do on this level what I did on 2-2 where I left the tide running low but still enabling vertical scroll. I was reluctant to do that on this particular level because I wanted the screen to still scroll while keeping the whole "rising tide" element throughout the stage. I'll have to think of something creative to tweak that.

Lol, never seen anyone ever use sprite 7C in a hack, but for the sake of keeping the hack faithful to the original I kept it there. As bizarre as it is.

Thanks for all your input so far!
I'm at 60 exits right now, and i'm loving it. It's just the right difficulty for a chill mario adventure.
This hack looks very well-polished and fun to play. I'll put this one on my list of hacks to play. Hopefully I can get around to playing it soon!
This is looking really good very polished. I really like the star road looking submap a lot too, not sure why it stands out so much to me but it does.
Looks like you invested a ton of time on this. It looks very beautiful and polished, especially the overworld. Congrats on the release! :)
The aesthetics are excellent and the levels are fun based on what I've played so far, nice job!

Quite an impressive length for a SMW Hack.
I hope that it manages to stay consistently good throughout.

I'm liking the small touches done to the existing SMW graphics as it really has that vanilla style going for it.
The palettes and graphics looks so AWESOME! It gave me such a big SMW Beta vibe for some reason
