new topic to talk about your favorite game you played
Legend of Mana had like so-so gameplay and Okami had really jank pacing, but the worlds and characters and how they illustrated them with the graphics were really phenomenal and the reason I hold those games close to my heart more than others.

Final Fantasy IX, Suikoden and Romancing SaGa 2 are also really good.

Ah yes, this classic thread topic. My list of favorite games has probably changed quite a bit from the last time I posted in a thread like this.

If I had to choose a singular favorite game, it would probably be Silent Hill 2. I love horror (so it's fitting that Halloween was so recent), and not only does this game deliver there but it also comes with such a memorable story to boot as well. Every pixel in the game is just perfectly well-placed. It's not for everyone, but I'd for sure recommend anyone to give it a try at least.

- Xenoblade Chronicles - Best. RPG. Ever.

- Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors - Anyone who knows me well also knows how much I love visual novels. I've played a fair share by this point, but 999 is still the best. The lead writer's other works (Never7, Ever17, etc) are beautiful as well.

- Spec Ops: The Line - One of the best narratives I've ever seen in a shooter. I still think about it every now and then.

- Final Fantasy 6 - I know I already named an RPG, but I can't exclude this. Sure, it has some problems, and in many ways hasn't aged perfectly, but it has a special place in my heart nonetheless for a) having a truly engrossing and unique cast of characters that isn't a 1:1 copy of the generic style of characters we see in 99% of JRPGs and b) being one of the only games I knew of as a kid that never bored me or lost my interest.

- Persona 3 - Tartarus as a whole is a really fascinating concept for a game. The other Personas have wonderful settings as well, but 3's presentation just nailed it for me.

- Knytt Stories - By far the most interesting "community level editor"-type game that I know of. The main game is unbelievably relaxing, and the games people create in the program are pretty much on-par. Special thanks to eXcavator for introducing me to this, by the way.

If it isn't obvious, I tend to really like games that have good narratives or can create an overall nice "experience" outside of the gameplay and fun alone. Other honorable mentions include Puzzle Bobble / Bust-a-Move, Irisu Syndrome, World of Goo, and the Professor Layton / Ace Attorney series.

this is going to sound extremely confrontational but thank you for having ff6 as your favorite while also not being one of those snobby "every ff after 6 is bad" people i cannot stand those putas

tactics, 8, 9 and 10 fan here along with 1, 5 and to a lesser extent mq, 2, 4, 6 & 7. i haven't visited 3 in a while and have not played anything post 10, including x2 but excluding a few minutes of tactics advance as a toddler

ff6 is like one of those peak squaresoft games, i should replay it soone

Kinda unrelated but you just reminded me of how good Square games were on the SNES, like, it's crazy, I don't even know if they ever made a bad game during that era, I don't even know how they did it, they were a considerably smaller company back then, yet they published a dozen more games than they do nowadays and somehow all of them are of great quality!

The SNES is my favorite console ever for many many reasons, and I could easily say Square games are one of these reasons, it's telling how my mindset of "RPGs have amazing music/nice visuals" all came from that era, maybe if I experienced a lot of RPGs from other eras my default mindset would be completely different. And sure, a lot of these games are showing their age in how they can be a bit slow or whatever, but I can't say that whenever I look at a game that even remotely reminds me of a SNES RPG I won't be interested.

Sorry for kinda derailing the thread here. lol
I just can't really think of a few favorite games because I have too many games I like and when the question is too broad I just freeze become unable to come up with a clear answer.

romancing saga 1 honestly

i still love it though

PSX Square is also god-tier but i have only played Legend of Mana, SaGa Frontier 1&2, FF7-9 + Tactics, and Einhänder.
the last of which is, somehow,
referenced with a bonus boss in the gummi ship segments of Kingdom Hearts 3????????
holy shit

Admittedly, I haven't played some of the other really popular Final Fantasy games that most people consider to be really great (i.e. 7, 9, 12, etc), but I think they all look really awesome; I wouldn't say that every game after 6 was bad. I'm not that dismissive :P

As for other SNES Squaresoft games ... I just went through the whole list, and I've only played Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG. I never played Romancing Saga, Bahamut Island, or any of the other ones, though they look intriguing. If Enix counts, then I did play ActRaiser and Terranigma though.

I wouldn't call it derailing. Threads like this are fun if they can kick off some genuine discussion. If every single thread like this was just "everyone posts their answers to the OPs question without interacting with each other, and that's it", then these threads would be quite boring IMO.

It seems so, but sadly, I haven't really played any PS1 RPGs (or a whole lot of PS1 games in general), except for a little bit of a Bomberman strategy game of all things. I definitely played certain RPGs that are available on the console, but on other consoles, same with a lot of non-exclusive games in general (especially if you consider ports of arcade games), as far as actual exclusives I've played, it's pretty much Klonoa, Mega Man Legends 2, X5, X6 and the 4 Crash games. I played more stuff, but I can't really remember well because it was so long ago.

So far, the only Sony console I've really played a lot of games on was the PS2, I want to get a PS1 and PS3 at some point in the future, so I can actually finally play a lot of games I've missed on. Yeah, I know some PS3 consoles can play PS1 games and so does the PS2, but it's mostly for the collection/novelty aspect.

I also like the Sony handhelds (to be honest, I like almost any handheld with quality games on it), which I want to collect for at some point too.

Um... anyway, I've heard a lot of great things about SaGa Frontier games and obviously, FF7 through 9 (I know 8 is divisive, but to me, it looks really visually impressive, especially in comparision to 7 and Squall has my favorite design so there's that too). I've also heard great things about Parasite Eve and Xenogears.

I have some old magazines talking about some of these games when they were new (and in case of some them, they were still just barely announced and yet to be released), which gives me some insight into this stuff, going off-topic again, reading these can be really nostalgic, it's like a time travel of sorts, into the general state of things back then and the mind of people during that era (and more personally, it can also be an insight of a time I was too young to really understand the context of things properly, nowadays I kinda know what's going on in the gaming world without even looking stuff up thanks to the Internet, but as a kid I had no idea of what was happening, which gave me a sense of wonder when discovering stuff that I don't really get much now).

super mario world of course. also touhou 6.
Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon is my #1. Apart from the high difficulty and expansive mechanics to make your approach to the dungeon crawl more fine-tuned, I like the Connection Orb way of recruiting every Pokemon up through 6th gen, the main story
(I never thought my spirit would get dragged to symbolic hell and be trapped in a labyrinth trying to return to my cold stone body in a Pokemon game - I can forgive that the final bits of story were similar to Gates to Infinity but this felt a lot more hopeless and desperate, and the ending extremely emotional)
, and the soundtrack is legendary. It's a sin that there aren't more MIDIs for this game. What I despise is there's no New Game+ and only one file. I almost want a second copy just for that. I loved the game that much. Pikachu and Oshawott forever.

Der Langrisser, Langrisser Mobile, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, Final Fantasy Tactics all round up some pretty high-ranking favorites too. They're all grid-based, turn-based strategy RPGs - this seems to be my favorite style of game. The former 2 are more unit type-alignment based though the first one lets you command large squadrons hired under each commander and the latter has soldiers built into each hero forming a single unit as if they were an accessory with a bonus and layer of type alignment on top of it. The latter three let you develop each unit's skills under a job and equip a secondary set of skills learned, and in addition to passive gains, equipment attributes that give immunities and resistances, the customization is incredibly deep. It is necessary to grow a little bit of almost everything in order to defeat what may come, though some of the gimmicky classes like Blue Mage in FFTA/2 and the Calculator in FFT are incredibly fun. I really love Juggler Moogles in FFTA2 for unrivaled positioning ability and affliction. The law systems of FFTA add another twist, as your units will get sent to jail of they violate them in battle. I want to get into Famicom/Advance Wars as I hear it's very much like Langrisser~ Fire Emblem, maybe.

For whatever reason, Mario Kart Tour is also incredibly addictive. The two-week tour cycle keeps it minty fresh.

@K.T.B.: The original FF7 is a lot of fun and a lot of the side challenges you can subject yourself to are really rewarding (e.g. breeding optimal racing Chocobos, getting Great Gospel or Omnislash on Disc 1 or really just getting all of everyone's Limit Breaks in general, hunting down all the Enemy Skills, mastering all the Materia, defeating Ruby and Emerald Weapon.) Not counting any Pokemon games, this is the one JRPG I have sunk probably hundreds of hours into growing up. It throws a lot of memorable story wackiness at you in Midgar in the Wall Market. While the end of Disc 1 is famous, there are some shocking and emotional events of similar or greater gravity if you really consider the places and people outside your group, and a few in your group have huge story events too.
Cid and Shera's event with the rocket destined to take out the meteor for me was the most emotional part of the game, by far.
The Lego-looking people on the pre-rendered maps are admitably charming; they'll grow on you. It's kind of a product of the times. The battle models and animations look pretty great though. The spells and summons look and sound good - Beta and Knights of the Round ("Ultimate End") are my favorites~ Just ... whatever you do, don't use Cait Sith's Slots Limit Break. Just don't. If you want to, save first. This is your only warning.

Just look above you...
If it's something that can be stopped, then just try to stop it!
Hmm. If I had to pick, I'd probably say my top favorites are, in no particular order:

Persona 3 - The music, the story, the central themes of the game (doesn't matter who you are, death awaits you, or quoth good ol Latin "memento mori") really resonated with me and I had a blast with the game, even with the crappy presentation of the PSP version which was my first playthrough as FeMC.

Fire Emblem Genealogy of the Holy War - Peak FE. Jk, but it is at the top for me. The gameplay nowadays can be a little annoying (no trading, obtuse doubling mechanics) but the story, graphics, and music are awesome. The generation system is really interesting and allows for a lot of experimentation and potential baddening of your 2nd Gen units, intentional or otherwise. Plus, it feels natural, unlike the child mechanics of Awakening and Fates (especially the latter) which felt shoehorned.

I also rather like Persona 2, but Innocent Sin's not so exciting gameplay, especially in the PSP version, makes it a bit hard for me to declare it an all-time favorite even though Eternal Punishment is really good.

Der Langrisser was also a super great time and I need to do the other routes. I did play some of the other ones, but none of them really pulled me in like Der.

Shin Megami Tensei - Its graphics are rather bland and unimpressive nowadays but the pseudo 3D perspective must have been super cool. Beyond that, the story is cool, the music is great, and overall a fun time (provided you consult a guide or like to just wander until you happen upon where to go)

Saints Row 2 is easily the best of the Saints Row series. The story is actually interesting unlike the rest of the games (sorry SR4,) the gameplay is great... mostly, the radio stations are actually good, unlike SR1 and 3, loads of customization options, some of which that never return, and Stilwater is fun to explore, unlike Steelport. As a follow-up to Saints Row, it's incredible. It's an improvement in every way.

I liked Ys VI - The Ark of Napishtim a lot. I've noticed this one seems to be a bit divisive. Personally, it's one of my favorites, along with Oath in Felghana. I haven't played any meaningful amount of Ys VIII at this very moment, so that could change in the future. The music was pretty great, the graphics I liked, the portraits were good. I just really like the look of this era of Ys and Trails. I can't compare to other Falcom games of the time (back when they actually made more than just Trails and Ys, but Falcom is a small developer) because I know very little about them. I like the way it tied together all the previous entries. Also, the game never felt too hard on Normal. OiF could get pretty challenging on Normal.

Ok, I'm gonna cut myself off there because at this rate I'm going to end up writing a novel. As you can maybe tell, I'm bad at picking favorites.

My personal favorite game is Undertale. I always found myself really loving the story, characters and themes of the game and it's overall take of connecting story with gameplay, and of course I'm excited for Deltarune.

Some of my other favorites though include Night in the Woods, Overwatch, Sonic Generations, and of course - Super Mario World.
Pfff, there's a lot of games that can be considered my favorite of all time. Super Mario World is tthe candidate I think is closest to my view of perfectionn? But there's also Pokémon Gen 3 & 4, Minecraft, Undertale, Mario Kart Wii, Tomodachi Life and that doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of thee amount of great games i've grown attached to over the years.
I have so, so... SO many! I'll just list a couple. Probably Sonic 1, Rocket Knight Adventures, Tetris, Kirby's Dreamland and Donkey Kong. So that's all I can think of now.
The Turrican trilogy
Mega Man 11 is my favorite game on the Switch. But I'm not sure about all time though...

I said ON THE SWITCH. I still adore the other Mega Man games though. Honestly my favorite Mega Man games have to be either 1,2 or 5, But 11 is still up there. Never played 8,9 or 10 unfortunately...

im pretty sure you can play those on mega man classic collection (2). isnt that game like 15$? id recommend it. i think 9 got a lot of shit when it was released for being too "trial and error" based but i feel that thats part of the experience of playing the game. 10 did better to fix that so that level designs were 'more fair' really liked the diversity of composite in the music for 10 too. i think they signed up everyone who did the music for the first games to each do 1 track. i guess ill try out 11 now
