Solved the Kwanda Rosman arc in Suikoden and am up to 37 Stars of Destiny. The
burning down of the Elf Village
was really sad, even if Kirkis and Sylvina's personalities are somewhat flat,
you wouldn't really be expected to be intimately familiar with everyone in your army's troubles and inner demons, especially when they're a 108 man party
.

The dwarves' outright racism towards elves and humans and vice versa is really harsh, but shows the utter contempt sowed by the several species' contempt for one another's differences. But,
I would have liked to see dwarves and elves being more racist towards the human party instead of just between dwarves and elves, maybe making the shopkeeps begrudgingly accepting to help you and having them charge more until you prove you're on their side
. I suppose that's a lot for a 1995 PSX game but, still. Dungeons are still rather bland and "Bravely Default-ish", but I liked the maze room in the dwarves' giant mountain vault. The Dwarven City is also rather gorgeous, the electric windmill is especially good looking.

I expected the war battles
to be closer in line of the Romancing SaGa 3 ones, as in, confusing and opaque to anyone who isn't a master. But it turns out they're quite simple and friendly. While a lot of it is using the formation with the most attack power, figuring out what's the best strategy to use still seems to be a factor in victory though
.

The duel battle
reminded me of both SaGa Frontier 2 and Pokémon Stadium. While in SaGa Frontier 2 you had a lot of options to experiment with and grasp new techs, Suikoden goes for a simpler Attack/Defend/Give It Your All battle system. It again, feels very easy to use and interesting to figure out, though for Kwanda you can mostly pick Attack and you'll win
.

Sadly I've only discovered in the making of this post's Talkhaus equivalent that you can
recruit Kwanda
. So oops!

Overall, yesterday and today, I've recruited Sergei, Gaspar, Antonio, Meg, Onil, Kai, Maas,
Sylvina
, Sheena, Valeria and Meese.

Pretty sure I can do it on emulator too, the bombs have rather large hitboxes.

Beat Virtua Fighter and DonPachi's Saturn versions. Virtua Fighter was as Jeffry and DonPachi was as the green helicopter.

Virtua Fighter is still a solid fighter with excellent gameplay mechanics, even if the port is a bit buggy, but DonPachi is still a bit eh as always. The later DDP games are better (except for DDP2? the Korean one).

Had to use a lot of continues and easy mode, and bombs in DP's case.

Completed all 120 stars of Super Mario Galaxy in 3D All-Stars a few days ago. Still an icredibly fun game, even though a bunch of stars just feel like padding, especially the purple coin ones. Gave Super Mario Sunshine another chance, but got annoyed by it again pretty much within the first few minutes and gave up on it. It just isn't a game for me. Played Super Mario 64 for a few more stars, but put it on ice for the time being to play other games. Super Mario 64 is still a decently fun game for me, but I just don't really get hookced by it very easily anymore.

So after 3D All-Stars, I started playing and finished Dandara. What an amazingly fun game! Even though a very short one, like most Metroidvanias, but for me it's pretty much a peak example of the genre. Additionally, its unique twist on movement makes it really interesting and entertaining. It's always surprising to see how adding just a single twist to an established game formula can make for something that feels completely different.

Also started playing The Entertainment War today. Seems like an entertaining game so far (pun intended). I suppose it's also a Metroidvania-ish game, but with more linear level design and more of a focus on combat. I do prefer Metroidvanias with a focus on exploration, but nevertheless this is a fun game so far.
Feel free to visit my website/blog - it's updated rarely, but it looks pretty cool!

Fully intend to do this myself, currently bumbling through some of the Garden room galaxies before I go back and fill in some gaps. I've made some good progress on SM64 but I find the controls super annoying and end up getting annoyed. I'll go back to it one day. I've not even touched Sunshine yet, but will do after Galaxy. Forgot how good of a game Galaxy is, to be honest.
Started Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim a couple days ago. I've been really liking it so far, the music's really good, the gameplay is nice, but Oath and Origin did magic better. Just got to the end of the Ruins of Lost Time. I had a real fun time getting the Dash Jump down but using a keyboard made it a lot easier than using the d-pad on my Xbone controller. I look forward to seeing what game brings to the table! There's surprisingly very few 'stupid' achievements. By that, I mean like "kill like 2000 of this enemey," or beat this ultra hard bonus boss. I might try to do the ones not tied to progression in the story other than the "beat the game on Nightmare" achievement. I'm not doing that. Normal in the Napishtim style games gives me enough trouble lol.

I packed my Switch cord and had to run out and buy another instead of tearing all my boxes open, so now I could finally enjoy my Bing Bing Wahoo 3D All-Stars. The pin set promo evaporated into thin air as soon as it became available, so I asked Nintendo if they were doing any extra runs. I will keep SMWC posted if anyone else was also striving for them.

I am finding the camera controls in SM64 with the right stick a little late and struggled somewhat - Shifting Sand Land and Lethal Lava Land felt harder to navigate with the new aspect ratio. Mario controls tight as ever, though. It is going to take some getting used to. A lot of what I remember from SM64 is still fresh in my head. The texture upgrades (paintings, Bob-ombs and other round guys) look phenomenal and this gives an incredible amount of smoothness to whatever enemies they chose to render with sprites instead of polygons. This is really bright and indulgent.

I tried out Super Mario Sunshine and it doesn't feel like a Mario game so much as a romhack of SM64 that revolves around a sludge-cleaning gimmick and water jetpack travel. It's not bad, and so far it is a little confusing for me to navigate because the worlds are so open, big, and new to me. Loving the water, though, both in usage and in surface texture. The camera is perfect and the way it can be used to gently steer Mario would have been amazing to retrofit into SM64.

I haven't touched Galaxy yet but I don't want to taste all 3 flavors of the Neapolitan trifecta out of the box and put it back in the freezer. I think I am going to return to SM64 and enjoy them in order, perhaps getting a few months out of this collection.

Just look above you...
If it's something that can be stopped, then just try to stop it!
Beat Ys: Ancient Ys Vanished Omen. It was a ton of fun but then Darm Tower came in all like, "here's the challenge you ordered". The enemies just piled on you and tossed you around like you were a paper bag. Also Pictimos, Khonsclard and Yogleks + Omulgun are fucking dumb when you're running at like extremely choppy movements with 48 KB of VRAM (for Pict and YogOmu) or the ability to only move in the four main cardinal directions with unpredictable patterns (for Khons). At least Dark Fact was cool.

Man.

Shows how much we take for granted with the remakes.
It's not bad it's just. Yowza

Been playing Left 4 Dead 2 since it's a perfectly fitting time of the year for that, and it had been on the back-burner since around either 2013 or 14 (whenever it was given away for free that one time). Been playing single-player (playing as Rochelle) which means the AI-controlled survivors will probably startle witches (I've found the chainsaw to be super-effective on witches and even killed one before it could be startled). I would consider the part where you have to walk on the roller coaster in the carnival level to be "that one level" and I also like how the finale of that campaign wasn't yet another "collect X amount of gasoline containers".

Not a gameplay diary post, but Sony is thinking of trashing their current storefront in favor of one that doesn't let you buy PS3, PSP or Vita games and it's extremely fucking disappointing.

Jim Ryan is also extremely ignorant of the company's past. This is giving me flashbacks of this one really dumb Twitter rando I made fun of who was like "why would you play old games when you have the PS5" and I'm just sitting here like, maybe I'm poor????

Especially with first party PS5 Sony games now gonna be costing $70...
Not to mention this:

Quote
PlayStation boss Jim Ryan has said that "low priced, reduced spec" consoles like Xbox Series S "have not had great results in the past."

Source

All of this coupled with the arrogant, X to confirm, O to deny standard being enforced for every region, Asia's muscle memory be damned just makes me hope Microsoft and Nintendo shit all over Sony.

I hate to sound like a vengeful turbo nerd but man they really need to stop being arrogant little bitches.

in a nutshell lol

EDIT: Might as well add some gameplay journal updates:
Played a bit of Suikoden yesterday. Forced myself awake to try and finish the Milich arc, but I was too tired and I was basically hurting myself over bragging rights (beating a ton of games in one year).

Recruited Gon, Fu Su Lu, Lorelai, Apple, Hellion, Gen, Kamandol, Kimberly and Tesla. Fu Su Lu (replace the lu with ya and you get FuSoYa, fun fact) is already part of my main party for strength and cuteness <3. Gonna skip going out of my way to recruit ones like Lotte and Jabba because I don't wanna grind in Suikoden lol

Did the war on Garan, and failed the war on Scarletitia Castle (one of those no-win scenarios you see in RPGs). Upgraded the boat on Rikon to get past the Dunan rapids and upgraded a few weapons a bit with the Potch I had. Heading to Soniere Prison for today.

Getting back into Breath of the Wild. While I still wish traversal were faster, I'm still having fun finding all sorts of things I missed.

I'm really enjoying Mario 35. I really wish that the level rotation wouldn't have so many duplicates of easy levels and that the timer would accelerate more quickly. It's still a lot of fun and the special battles somewhat alleviate my issues.
I made it to Shannoa Village in Ys SEVEN. The art style has grown on me somewhat but I still prefer the Napishtim-Origin-Oath art style. I'm starting to notice a lot of similarities between this and Memories of Celceta so I'm starting to worry that Memories is shaping up to be a bit of a copy-paste of this game. Playable Dogi is a nice feature of SEVEN though

Started Resident Evil 5 Co-Op with my brother. We played for a couple hours and stopped at the last part of Chapter 2. I like the game, but having played the classic RE games, I can completely understand why people don't like it. It's nothing at all like RE1-3.

Super Mario Galaxy was like that gem that I somehow glossed over when I'd play Wii games. It has insanely creative, sometimes disorienting level design with all the weird gravity. Buoy Base Galaxy is a perfect reminder that Super Mario Odyssey is the only 3D Mario platformer where trying to swim isn't an absolutely tedious chore. If nothing else Nintendo should have just made swimming in all 3 games in 3D All-Stars just like how it is in Odyssey (literally just 2D Mario swimming but in 3D). Maybe then certain missions would actually be more fun than real world politics.

So Suikoden. Grinded a bit to upgrade everyone's gear at Antei and also equipped Qlon along the way, yesterday. Hataiate (Head Gears) and Guard Rings on everyone. Still need to buy Shinobi Clothes (Ninja Suit) for everyone, I think I have it for Flik and Viktor?

Secondly. I've started Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes, PC-98 version (I couldn't read some of the kanji in the PC-88 version due to the tiny font). This is a game I've wanted to start for a while and like, it started out kind of cute (young prince Selios goes out to beat up monsters instead of study), but then it started so by the numbers it was kind of silly, his town of El'Asta gets attacked, he escapes to Rudia where the king, Akdam, boldly proclaims he killed his dad, the former king As'El of Rudia, and caused the attack on El'Asta. And now he's going to take over the world or whatever and like imprisons Selios, then he gets set free and joins the resistance to take down Akdam. Not many games can make the claim that they have you walk into a "I killed your dad" speech at the very prologue.

Yesterday I played through a bit of it, went through the prologue, and a linear cave with stationary Owl enemies that combined, raised Selios to Lv4, recruited Lunan, then I was hit with a mandatory EXP gate to Lv8 before Aron (Ryas' brother, Ryas being Selios' tutor, elderly mentor and caretaker), leader of the resistence and his granddaughter Sonia would tell me where to go next, which was freeing the injured miners at the Velga Mine. Suffice to say, I only grinded to Lv7 because the grind was just too much to stomach with such low exp gains and no "x points until next level up" counter, from what I could find. Managed to get Row (Low?), a wandering freeloader who mocks you for being weak until you reach Level 6 at which point you can recruit him, though.

Today, I finished the grind and got the mission. Headed to Velga, spoke to Pete and went off to beat up the commander, first few attempts went dreadful, due to him using Siles on my party and himself, and my Res Leaves not being enough for the battle (400HP when the max for the more reasonable enemies was 60), I didn't notice the first page of the inventory was filled with items from the start of the game. Even then I just Flam 3'd his ass with Row and used Res Leaves when I had <=50 HP on any character. Anyway, I freed the miners, recruited Gale, who they confused with The Other Gale, the great thief Gale, and there was a silly scene where Row made fun of the guy and Gale just kept getting mad. Stormed Rudia the morning after, slayed some soldiers and a commander (much easier with Gale's equipment and higher level). Akdam then ran away by boat. Chapter 1 clear, as we take back the throne.

After freeing Felicia, Selios' mom, and getting the Tear of Gilmore from her, I raided the basement storage and headed to Nelia Harbor. Bought a ship, fell asleep at the inn, saw my Gold being drained, which lead to a cutscene where most of the party suspects Gale again, and we sailed off to Rondo Harbor the next morning. Currently grinding for some Chain Mail after buying some Iron Spears, both costing 1000. I mostly just have to buy Chain Mail for Selios since, for Gale, I can just get the Chain Mail found at the nearby Bloodshed Cavern, according to a spoiler-free flowchart-ish walkthrough I'm using from http://asurafantasy.sakura.ne.jp/ of the Super Famicom version. Gotta get this done at a reasonable pace!

honestly, suikoden's still chill. i wasn't able to play it yesterday due to getting back some sleep and just conking out all day, neither the day before because i woke up at 5 pm and practiced drawing all day.

legend of heroes 1 is a far cry from the hype everyone gives the trails games but after the weird beginning it's turning into a chill traditional jrpg, sorta dragon quest/vanilla rpg maker type. i'd expect something more out of the box from falcom but that seems to be more the gagharv games' repertoire, followed with the trails games' super good worldbuilding and writing from what i've heard.

EDIT:
hacked my vita~ #wario{B)}
downloading blazblue continuum shift rn for a test drive
will try to do 3ds next then i dunno lol

im thinking of possibly going for an all in one pseudo saturn cartridge on aliexpress later in the year when i have more money, maybe an ntsc-j saturn too because it was still released in the 50hz era

if you want guides and how to regarding p*racy and homebrew, google it yourself. just beware to not mention piracy in at least the nintendo hacking discord because they get pissy, probably to not get in trouble with the discord tos but also probably nintendo worshipping

Just ordered an HDMI capture card off Amazon that will finally allow me to record some of my console games.

Excited to get to playing some Mario Maker and Mario Kart live! #tb{:DD}

Beat Suikoden's PSP release a few days back, started it and beat it in a matter of like 4 days? Will start Suikoden II's equivalent that came bundled with it later. One of my favorite games now. My one complaint about the PSP version is that I wish it added the improvements of the Saturn version (the extended pirates' hideout sidequest and
the Gremio revival flashback portion
for instance) so we'd have a good mix of Saturn version's bonuses (apart from the new intro FMV, that is there) with the PSX version's higher overall quality.

Been trying to trudge through Final Fantasy I PSX on Normal mode, which has NES difficulty, so it's been tough, but I'm okay with it. At Mount Gulg so far, trying to beat Marilith. Party is Warrior/Monk/White Mage/Red Mage.

Also got Mario Maker 2 recently and a 12 month NSO subscription. Played a few levels online, lots of good stuff there, even the lower quality stuff is made with heart. Also played the first four jobs in Story Mode. Gonna try to make a few later as a sort of practice for Lunar Magic and my hack,
Dionysus Fulfilling His Promise to Prosymnus
(i mean if idol gets to name her kaizo hack Lesbos iirc).

Tetris 99 is pretty addicting too (slight tweaks in it make it feel worse than TGM though) but I'm having a hard time making it past mid 60s, haha...

Almost done with Kirby Star Allies, been binging it today and got to The Divine Terminus. Will finish the final two stages (and
Extra Planet δ
) tomorrow.

Replaying 7th Dragon on the DS, for the first time since the game came out in Japan in 2009. Currently doing a gimmicky full-support team. The game's as immensely charming as I remembered it being, and it unfortunately still has all the awkward pacing, balance, and mechanical issues I remembered, too. I'm still enjoying it and I'm having fun forming strategies with my underpowered team. I really with that the rest of the series would follow the style of this game rather than going for what I feel is a watered-down gameplay format with a much worse aesthetic.
so I was playing Assassin's Creed Unity so I could uninstall it after I finish it but Ubisoft completely broke Uplay, er, sorry, Ubisoft Connect so now none of my games launch. Luckily I only had purchased AC2, and everything else I got for free. Not like I'm missing out on Unity, but real bummed about not being able to play AC2 and Brotherhood now.
Nice going.

Beat Kirby Star Allies back in the 29th, woke up in the middle of the night, played the last two stages in a half-asleep state and then went back to bed.

And beat Mario Maker 2 story mode's main game today. Still have the rest of the jobs to finish.
