Thanks @ both.

I agree on getting a checkup on RPG's end, that sounds very serious.

As for coding, I have a tendency to compare myself constantly to people like Sonikku, carol, Romi, john fortnite kennedy (a new user, he's got himself banned for an unknown purpose), Vitor Vilela... But I keep forgetting that those people took time to become as good as they are. Part of me mostly wants money for video games but if I could help around the house until my mom gets retirement pay (she's in her 60s and still working) without having to worry about not having any money for myself that'd be nice too.

I'm a bit anxious about working for people since I'm neurodivergent (autism spectrum, anxiety etc) but I hope I can do a good job.

@lion: It can definitely be a long journey getting to a point where you feel confident enough in your skills to do most things without having to think about them. One thing that always helps me immensely is to not just learn for the sake of learning, but to try and achieve a specific goal and just learn stuff in the process of doing that. For example, I've never really spent much time reading ASM tutorials, and when I did, you can bet that I forgot 80% of the stuff I read shortly afterwards. Instead, at some point in my life I decided that it would be really cool to make an RPG-styled HP counter for SMW, so I got started on that and pretty much just looked up/learned the things I needed to accomplish that specific goal. In fact, if you go and download v1.0 of the patch that is hosted here on this site, you will have the exact patch I wrote back then and see the exact code that I wrote to actually learn coding itself. It sounds bizarre, but learning by doing is indeed a very powerful tool. Naturally, learning this way doesn't always lead to great solutions. In fact, more often than not, you will end up with horrible solutions (or sub-par solutions at best). But as it turns out, even bad solutions are just as useful for learning as good solutions (if not even more useful). By my standards nowadays, the HP counter patch I wrote back then is pretty much garbage, yet I wouldn't even be able to recognize that if I had never written it, because it was one of the things that actually gave me the skill to do so in the first place.

@Counterfeit: I have visited a doctor once, yeah, and while that has been a few years ago, the symptoms of the back pain are pretty much the same as a few years ago, so the causes are likely also still the same. She described it as a typical symptom of office work and recommended doing certain exercises, including yoga, but my problem is that I don't really feel comfortable with those exercises and even when I start doing them, I just never manage to keep at it. The only exercise I've managed to do for an extended period of time was swimming, though of course that doesn't really do much for back problems (well, at least not breaststroke swimming, which is the only style I can really perform). It was still good for my health and overall fitness, just not for the back per se.

What did have a big positive impact on my back, however, was getting a height-adjustable desk at work. Basically, it allowed me to alternate between sitting and standing while working, so I would sit for one hour then stand for half an hour and then keep alternating multiple times throughout the day. Limiting the amount I spent sitting greatly benefitted my back. Like, the pain never fully went away, but it was basically reduced to just a side note 90% of the time. Only issue? Well, as I mentioned, the desk is at our office, and these desks are way too expensive for me to afford one at home. Normally, this wouldn't be a problem as I'd be spending the majority of my computer time per week at work, but due to Corona forcing home office onto us, that's just no longer the case, and thus my pain got worse again. I do sometimes get up when my pain gets too bad, but it's not something I do regularly because I keep forgetting about it. As for hydration, I do on average drink between 2 and 3 litres of water a day, maybe even more sometimes, but I don't know if that's enough. Allegedly, I'd need to drink 4+ liters of water a day at my weight, but I just don't consider that a possibility. If I did that, I might as well spend my entire day at the toilet because I'd be peeing non-stop. Also not really sure how to best describe the pain, but it's in the center or maybe the lower part of the spine. Not sure if any of your descriptions fit, but I suppose "achy" would be the closest to what I feel, though I do think it's more spine-related and less muscle-related.

Regarding ergonomical chairs, that's actually one of the major issues here. I don't even know what chair can be considered ergonomical or what chair would be best for, but I know that I haven't found the perfect one for me yet. One issue that I kept having was that most of the chairs I've owned in my life weren't durable in the slightest and already gave in under just my slight overweight, breaking really quickly and as result forcing me into uncomfortable - and likely very unhealthy - sitting positions. Eventually, I got fed up with it, so I decided to invest some more money and get a chair specially designed for heavy people. I did just that and the good news is that the chair I got did actually turn out to be really stable and has lasted for probably over two years now without breaking. At (if I remember correctly) around 200€, it was also pretty cheap for chairs in this category. The downside? As this chair is designed for heavy people, it is apparently also designed for big people. As in, people who would likely be way more overweight than me. The chair is simply too big for me. The armrests are too far appart, and the area of the seat is too big/the backrest is too far back for me to sit on the chair as intended. So once again, sitting on the chair actually forces me into an uncomfortable and likely very unhealthy position, and I don't really know what to do about it. I can't just keep blindly buying chairs, not knowing if they'll be any good for me or what kind of chair I need in the first place, yet I also don't know where I can go to try chairs before buying them. Well, I mean, I did try some chairs at IKEA, but the problem is that those were the chairs I mentioned above that pretty much broke after just a few weeks, and that's another key problem. I think most chairs only show their problems after a few weeks in use, and that's not really something you can test while visiting a furniture store.

Anyways, my big chair is also where my footrest comes into play. It's not that I really had any pain in my legs (except for in my knees sometimes, but that's a different story), it's just that I hope to compensate for the size of this chair a bit by using a footrest and thus shortening the distance from my legs to the "ground". I don't know if it'll actually work (I've just ordered it yesterday and it won't be here until Monday), but I've tried my girlfriend's footrest for a short while and it did seem like it could lead to a better posture on this chair overall.

Also yeah, I am a side sleeper, but unfortunately, other sleeping positions are pretty much out of question for me. Basically, all sleeping positions are uncomfortable for me, but side sleeping is the only one that is actually tolerable. Belly sleeping is impossible because it puts way too much pressure on my belly and face (though I guess belly sleepers are rare, anyways, and they probably use special beds?), back sleeping, on the other hand, is impossible because my head feels incredibly uncomfortable doing it. I don't even know how to describe it, but I suppose to my head it feels like the world was "upside down" or something like that. It's so uncomfortable that it'd be absolutely impossible for me to fall asleep that way. As for side-sleeping, as you've mentioned, it puts a lot of pressure on the shoulders. On top of that, my arms also get very uncomfortable and I never know what to do with them. Basically, I just keep rotating around every couple of minutes until I finally fall asleep.

So yeah, the back pain is definitely a tricky problem and one that isn't easy to improve. My best bet is pretty much getting back to office and using my adjustable desk again, but that isn't possible as long as Corona is still around, so I can really just hope that the situation ends as soon as possible. Anyways, thanks for all the tips and recommendations!

I checked around Rakuten Deutschland and I was able to find a nice chair here manufactured by MC Star that supports up to 160kg. It's probably smaller than the one you have now but I don't know if that holds enough for weight for you or is wide enough. I imagine it's got more integrity than an IKEA chair. I have heard some embarrassing "IKEA stuff breaking" stories from friends.

Your lower extremities and lower back are going to be under more pressure to support your body if you have a lot of extra weight and you also stand to damage your joints too, so I would try your best to bring your weight down. Adding fiber is a good way without changing anything else to rid some weight fast without a negative impact on your heart. "Raw" apple cider vinegar is another good weight hack, and anything else probiotic helps improve digestion and absorption. Reduce refined grains and starches as they metabolize to sugar and pack on your belly weight without satisfying hunger, and wheat in particular can increase inflammation; berries, particularly cherries, are good at reducing inflammation with regular consumption and have less sugar than most fruit or grain/starch items. Kale is a good, cheap vegetable for joint health with high levels of vitamin K - I find the texture awful so I would use a dressing like ranch or blend it finely into a fruit and veggie smoothie to make it more tolerable. I do understand your dietary options may be very limited right now.

I don't recommend caffeine or ketogenic dieting even though they're effective for weight loss too because they can be bad for your heart: absolutely consult with a nutritionist first if you plan on these. If you're a coffee or tea drinker, reducing that will have you going to the bathroom less and not needing as much water. Foods with higher sugar or diuretic properties will also make you go more often. Caffeine might also be bad for inflammation if that is the cause of any of your pain.

Posture is also super important so you want a chair that conforms to your spine's natural curvature but is also not so big you find yourself leaning in a corner of it. You will want a mattress and pillow that supports the natural position of the spine (firm memory gel is my favorite for both: replace your spring mattress if there's a huge depression in it,) You also want to be mindful of whether you slouch or stick your head out in any position, and when you walk, try and make sure both feet face forward. Most people don't realize, but excessive smartphone usage is one such thing as well that causes bad posture: people's necks to go in an unnaturally far-forward position. You don't want your neck to be straight-line upright either because the natural position has a slight forward curve (or "lordosis.") My physical therapist always said "imagine your head is being held up by a string" and that helped me learn to position my head properly without tensing my shoulders.

I urge you to commit to these exercises even though it's easy to forget, because that is the most important (and really only) thing you can do to ease the muscles. Set alarms and make a mandatory schedule. Don't work yourself to death on exercises, but add to what you can do slowly as you feel more stamina building.

Just look above you...

I got the parts ordered for my new laptop, so with any luck, I can get that built and work on my first big feature. hehe

Fingers crossed it'll be built within the next week. Over a month without a real computer has been challenging. Especially for a programmer.

great I want to meet you
Forgot to respond to your last post, Counterfeit. Was trying not to type too much, due to my arm problems.

To give just a short summary of what happened since then, I got my vertical mouse and it's really helping my arms a lot (I think), although of course not magically fixing all issues I'm having, since the chair is still a problem. I've since made an appointment with a doctor for August 24. I'm planning to ask her for recommendations on what kind of chair to look out for (I've gotten a couple of recommendations, but just don't want to risk buying an unfitting one again). Also planning to ask her for an X-Ray, just in case. Additionally, I've talked a bit to my boss and he'll see if he can get my height-adjustable desk from work delivered to me somehow, since it helped so much with my back problems.

So that's more or less where I'm standing right now.

Its weird seeing this place so dead when it used to be extremely active.

How are y'all doing in the year of our lord 2020?
It's not any deader than our Bar & Grill which had no post for 3 months once #smw{-_-;}

I've been doing fine, I guess. Still no job, which I'm desperately hunting for. I also made no progress on the hacking field in that regard, but I'm trying to, even if slowly.

Even on the internet we're social distancing.

If 2020 was a...

Relatively fine with a hint of winter-flavored anxiety. Was able to keep working thru lockdown and beyond. Haven't been to any amusement parks all year, tho I did go to a friend's pool. Also brainstorming some set-ups for Mario's Dying Simulator (the hack I showed screenshots of during C3.)
Legacy custom music
A site with a non-useless dislike button
SMW hacking channel

Doing fine. I miss just going outside, and as mentioned before, Home Office isn't doing my body well, but that aside, I'm doing pretty good.

Some time ago I've started streaming Chrono Trigger for my friends, and it's been pretty fun. Using an applicaton called Parsec, which has a really low latency and in theory even lets you play offline co-op games via the internet (though we haven't tried that yet). The low-latency aspect was especially important to me, because originally I used YouTube for streaming, but it was annoying when I had to wait a couple of seconds before I could hear my friends' reactions to my current progress. Would have just used Discord, but for some reason, Discord streaming and Chrono Trigger do not play well together. The game will just crash randomly after a couple of seconds. Also both YouTube and Discord had the same problem of not showing any of the game's video cutscenes. They simply appeared as black. Parsec doesn't have this problem, it just shows everything exactly as it is on your screen (just with some slightly uglier colors). So yeah, if you ever want to stream gameplay to your friend or play co-op games with them, give Parsec a try.

all the hopes i had for this year died because of the pandemic, but im doing fine too

also my account is turning 1 year old in a few days!
I've decided to resume some of my hobbies. I finished my college research project recently, and while I was wrapping it up I was going so crazy over the deadline that I had to force myself to stop doing most things that I like, including playing games, reading, practicing my guitar or watching movies and shows. I briefly got back to all of those after it ended, but I started a new research project the start of this month and I've slowly and subconsciously returned to restricting myself from doing all that stuff because I'm afraid to miss deadlines. But I'm a big procrastinator; the result of that is I lose a lot of time I supposedly set for studying with doing nothing (because I just can't get myself to study sometimes).

My hope is that by spending some of my time doing things I like, I'll feel less like a useless shitbag in general and become more motivated to do my obligations in a more timely manner.
It's easily the best thing I've done
So why the empty numb?
This month has been a lot more kinder than the previous month was, that's for sure.

I've just been going back to my old hobbies. Just grab games I played growing up and play them. It helps me take my mind off the stress I built up this whole year. Amazing what going back to your roots does.

STELLA!
I'm doing well.

Yesterday I climbed Mt. Washington, and I had fun with that. I have been climbing mountains for a long time, and I'm currently working on collecting a number of peaks on a list. Summiting Mt. Washington has gotten me to 41 out of 48. Seven more to go!

Dude that's sick, keep up the good work! What's next on your list?

To answer the question, 2020's been a good year for me despite the pandemic, it's been busy though, just finished an acting internship working in the ED. Since that's over maybe I'll post more than once a year... maybe.
Man, I always wanted to climb a mountain. I might just take a ride to the western part of the state and find the biggest rock I can. The closest thing to me are really big hills that must have been named Mt. Whatever by the ant that discovered it. They can be scaled in 5-10 minutes.

I don't know why but I also have the biggest urge to just go out in the wilderness and start photographing some of the landscapes and flora up close around here, like a photo safari with my awful smartphone camera... I have been seeing all kinds of exotic-looking stuff I hadn't noticed before. Maybe it's just this dang pandemic and overnight shift giving me the second worst kind of cabin fever.

It's also so unbelievably dry that the rivers and swamps I have seen out in our local wildlife reserves and state parks are down about 1.5+ feet or non-existent now. It's the driest I have ever seen it, and I can't find compiled data for this year yet. I wonder how the cranberry bogs are going to fare. Everyone has a watering ban up, but I wonder if it even applies to Ocean Spray, who owns most of the bogs in the area - if they can't water to compensate for the lack of rain, it's going to be a very bad harvest, and cranberries, juice and supplements will not be cheap. (Not good for me, I tend to use cranberry stuff quite a lot for good health and plus it makes the best muffins when used with orange zest.) It has also started to get cool up here a lot earlier than normal and some trees are already deactivating their chlorophyll and getting ready to shed. Bad winter incoming?

Just look above you...

Man, it's supposed to be super hot here this weekend. At least I should be able to finish cleaning the house up if I'm staying in til Monday. I'm actually really quite happy I didn't have to rent a storage unit or anything, just had to get rid of about 7-8 years of crap that been building up. Only a couple rooms to finish up. I even found a few items to upgrade my PC and Audio setup. I actually had a quite good speaker system (almost home theater grade) hidden away. Weird, I almost don't remember using them previously. Though, this used to be my parents' house, so maybe it was theirs.

I also found a bunch of my CDs and Cassettes, so I finally arranged them. Interestingly, I found a lot of my recordings dating back to my high school days too, and I actually took a listen to them in the past couple weeks. They range from crappy demos of my first band when I was 14 all the way to when I was 19 and kicked out of where I was living near Pittsburgh. They're mostly unpolished but maybe I'll spend some time reworking all the most developed ones. That'll give me something to do in my off hours once I've finished emptying the house of old stuff.

Once I decide to go outside again for reasons other than work I'll take a trip to the Black Hills and do some hiking.

Don't really have much to say other than I'm playing Suikoden after burning out on my backlog and Phantasy Star II. I am playing it in Japanese which I feel is beneficial for learning vocab and kanji, but I think I'm gonna go through some textbooks and the like to perfect my grammar.

I've felt kind of burnt out regarding drawing and ASM. Getting hospitalized just took me out of my funk and getting back to what I was working on just feels like an unsurmountable challenge to me. I have a small Leomon study I need to finish lining in order to practice it, and I need to figure out what is up with the scale platforms' scratch RAM being set to weird values but god that's so much effort and in the case of the ASM it's probably something I'll bash my head in for countless days until I magically discover what is wrong just by sheer accident.

So instead I'm just mindlessly scrolling through Twitter, looking at furry art and pictures of cute boys and shitposting on Discord. It's sad but I'm just feeling really tired I guess. Saturn Moriya and my BF theorize it might be depression but. I dunno. I don't feel sad, nor do I always feel that awful weight on my brain. I guess it could also just be the pandemic.

I also wasn't able to get on that freelancing site. It said to try again in like 6 to 12 months and work on my skillset but... I'll focus on getting a simpler, probably worse job at a supermarket chain nearby when COVID-19 clears up and I finish my Crohn's treatment. So far it seems that Russia's vaccine has established antibodies in volunteers, but I'm not trusting that it'll be the definite cure just yet. I'm giving it a bit more time.

I'm thinking of starting to save money to buy cheap used video games, mostly RPGs since they're more bang for your buck, and maybe help my parents financially when they need it. I'm gonna keep it to PS4, Switch and Steam + itch.io (don't wanna mess with a thousand storefronts), don't own an Xbone and it doesn't really have many exclusives outside of stuff that's available on PC. I don't know if I have any space whatsoever for video games so I'm probably not gonna collect retro stuff. Besides, a lot of it has spiked up in prices. I'd like to someday, but I also worry about bitrot and dead consoles.

I also caught up to the latest of raocow's YUMP 2 LP and the end of his Gato Roboto LP (he uploaded the final video right as I was in the middle of it). Looking forward to finally finishing the JUMP Team games + 2 Mice + slurdgery + Nachos, I let YUMP 2 be spoiled so I have a guide for the puzzles because I am too small brained for that.

I am thinking of studying some Mario hack designers' level making ethos and style to try and make some bad levels when I'm bored. Heraga mentioned playing all of lolyoshi's stuff in chronological order and seeing what works and doesn't work by taking the stuff yoshi got rid of and retained in his levels and using that as a basis for his own levels. I don't like traditional, Nintendo-styled level design like Gamma V or Roberto's personally, so I'm more interested in stages where you can feel the heart and soul of JUMP or VIP.

Basically the weird janky stuff, the nonsense gimmick/theme challenges, the good levels that are also shitposts... I guess what I'd keep a look out for is like lolyoshi, Morsel, pyro, idol, Lazy, gbreeze, pretty much all of the ASPE people, worldpeace, as well as some others outside of the JUMP and Japanese hacking clique who I need to discover... I just want something to keep me entertained.

I don't know if I'm gonna make some large scale ASM for now but... I wanted to try to get started studying Mode 7 for bosses and stages and whatnot but that just seems like too much hurt juice for my brain.

Everything kind of sucks except for RPGs right now, honestly. I'm just holding on.

So, I came back to this and realized this is probably better off in the Thread of Joy, so I'm editing this and giving just a little run down of things I guess.

Basically, for the past few months, I've been doing things out of my comfort zone, like watching anime kinda frequently (something I haven't really done for years), studying Russian, practice drawing sometimes, thinking about stories and characters for stuff I want to make in the future, taking walks on the woods some days of the weeks (something I'm not completely sure is safe, so please tell me if it's not).

In short, I feel pretty good, but a little weird.
Nothing too interesting to talk about other than that sadly.

Yesterday I just climbed the two Osceolas, which were pretty easy. Completing those brought me up to 43/48. Those were my most recent peaks after Washington. As for what is next, I have the Bonds and the Twins left. If I really wanted to go out with a bang, I could get all five peaks in one swoop, therefore completing my list. It would be a 14-hour hike though, so it might be too much.

The list I'm currently working on now are the NH 4,000-Footers, if you didn't know. Any location above 4,000 feet with a 250-foot dip in between any other location above 4,000 feet counts as one. For example, a mountain such as Boott Spur (located on the side of Mt. Washington) does not count, even though it is about 5,500 feet tall. This is because there is not enough of a dip between Boott Spur and Washington. In New England there are a total of 67 4,000-Footers. 48 in NH, 14 in ME, and 5 in VT. Once I finish the NH 48 I'll start working on the other 19 in ME and VT. Once those are finished, I plan to work on the New England Hundred Highest. After that, I don't know.
