Mirage Fortress, one decade later.

I'm talking about this monstrosity.

What if a new level was made taking the disappearing gimmick within vanilla contest restrictions? Not only that, but actually make a brand new level based on that old CLDC 2010 entry of mine. Done right. Less unforgiving. More interesting. Still challenging. And now slippery.

Mirage Fortress has succumbed to time and cold. Ten years have passed. It's gotten an overhaul in 2012 (see Blind Devil's Trip Back in Time in the SMW Hacks section), with most layouts unchanged, though Kamek abandoned the place in the same period. In 2020, Mario revisits the old fortress, finding that, despite ruined, the disappearing magic spell is still present. And thanks to some certain overpowered entity Mario met only once during the events of Mushroom Kingdom - Under Crimson Skies, new obstacles are present as well. Mario has no choice but to face this new challenge. Damn those overpowered entities that keep messing up with Mario's reality... those so-called hackers. At least Mario is glad that this time he was given infinite lives.

Enough of nonsense. Presenting: Miragice Remains.

How did you make that flickering on sprites? ExAnimation? And we can use it in VLDC? This changes everything.

NGL, neat-looking level just judging from the GIFs.

Basically, I believe in peace and bashing two bricks together.

It's ExAnimation (and I've used lots of slots to achieve 30fps animations for them). And it's allowed so there's that.

Glad you like it! Hope it also plays well for most people out there, too.

Watched the video. The level has an interesting music choice and many fun obstacles as well. The only flaw I see is that the 2nd part is slightly shorter than the 1st one.

Looks really nice! I like the gimmick here! By the way, what did you use to make the aurora? I can't put my finger on it. Also, I noticed the fixed jump sound sounds different here. According to the rules, you shouldn't use any fixes that aren't included in the base ROM, so keep that in mind. Even I am a bit bothered by that small thing.

To me it looks like it might be using part of the ghost house BG. Not too sure.

Had to sacrifice some of my ideas for the level overall as in order not to drag in for too long or overstay its welcome; regardless of this time being allowed for higher/no time limit, I wanted to play safe and restrict myself to 500 game seconds without risking the player to get time up deaths as well.

Thanks! The aurora was done by using rotated pieces of hills from GFX1B. And since we aren't allowed to recolor colors to transparency, I made layer 3 translucent and painted the intended transparent area to black so it doesn't show up.

That has to do with a certain AMK version I used, which had a different version of the jump SFX, more accurate to how SMW's original sounds. It shouldn't be a big deal. The same AMK version was used for my VLDC11 entry and no judges complained about it.

Huh, the judges didn't care that time? Hmm, maybe I could follow you then.

That exanimation is superb and it makes up for a really interesting level idea. Going for invisible stuff is always kinda dangerous but you made the animations quick enough and the design fair enough that nothing frustrating should happen.
I especially like the smb3-styled blocks and the aurea borealis in the bg. This is some really cool level Blind Devil.

Wow. I feel like this would be revolutionary in VLDC just like 1F0 lol. I can't even believe no one has thought of this in earlier contests.

I'm in shock tbh, especially from that last GIF. Flickering objects and sprites AND they flicker at different frames! That's quite an ultimate finale! Good stuff Blind Devil!

EDIT: One criticism that I have after watching the video is that I thought it was a little weird that the level was slippery. I can't exactly put my finger on what was weird, but I thought of possibilities. Maybe it was:
* the palette of some of the blocks (e.g. orange ones)
* the lack of icy graphics (e.g. the snowy foreground in level 12D)
* I was confused as to how the ice complimented the flickering gimmick

I meant to respond to this one much earlier: the way you pulled off the sprites and blocks blinking as a "mirage" in these circumstances is very smooth to me, and in watching the sprites run their courses, I can confidently figure where the next one I am going to will be. I realize some players may have difficulty with this sort of gimmick but it definitely fits well with me! It's an attention-getter and one that keeps me more interested in my surroundings. This level is extremely involving. I feel it is challenging, substantive, appropriately progressive, and balanced. I would be shocked if this didn't score at least a 94.

The palettes are gentle, various, dream-like yet technological. I want to say it maybe reminds me of a Mega Man stage with a hint of endgame Kirby's Adventure, an obscure yet original fusion. I don't know that the level appears "frosted-over" but it does try to lean to cold pastel colors and ends up being beautiful regardless. The palette animations on the inner bricks and aurora borealis are also easy on the eyes despite cycling through all those colors.

Just look above you...
