1. newdonkchallenge (good shit, even if I don't know too much about SMO's music in general lmao)

2. koopaling (this is nice; I don't really know if it sounds like any Mario song in specific, but it's a nice tune in it's own right EDIT: just realized what this is actually remixing lol; took me a while tho even if it sounded familiar enough to me, but yeah, I'm liking this jazz reharmonization of the SMW boss theme a ton haha)

3. Shining Beat (neat; might have gone a bit overboard with the voice samples here tho, which kind of sucks since I like them a lot)

4. Bowser's Last Stand! (this one had so much potential and could've gone a lot better if it had a bit more to it, but as it stands it sounds cool, if only a tad cluttered)

5. New Donk City (wonder if this one is supposed to be a different tune than the newdonkchallenge one; otherwise sounds neat, tho kind of bland in comparison to some of the others)

6. smw autumn (here we gouhou) (this doesn't sound like Mario at all to me, but it sounds nice; except it had to be based around Touhou music so it's pretty bland as a result jk lol; but yeah, it's not as memorable as the other ones sadly, and in general the style isn't one I like all that much)

7. Power Flower Workout (sounds nice, but damnit I really wished this one had more to it because it sounds pretty barebones even tho it has some cool things going for it; for one, the part at 0:21 would've benefitted from a nice, lush string section before it loops at 0:45, and I was actually half expecting it to do that with how the song was going, but it just ended in a pretty disappointing note which sucks so much lmao)

8. owtemmie (hmm, interesting direction, tho it sounds like very safe and formulaic EDM music for me, which is still cool, but yeah, it's kind of boring as a result)

9. 72hospc (pretty safe direction with the instrumentation, but personally I feel like that would've worked best if the song was memorable enough, but instead it's like, probably one of the most boring SM64 songs you could've picked LMAO)

10. Wario strikes again! - S Version (pretty boring; not much to say here tbh)

11. bonus (I like the instrumentation and admire your guts for picking this song as your choice, but yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeah, it's not good, sorry; would've been better if it was extended a tad further, but otherwise it just sounds really barebones and annoying to listen to)

12. Super Mario Land - Chai Kingdom Battle Remix (not a very good choice for a remix of that sort IMO, and it just sounds monotone AF and really directionless; sorry!)

I could see myself using this as a final boss theme in a hack.

owtemmie
Yeah, its a New SMB song but I don't care.

New Donk City
Sounds VLDC-ish, would be a cool urban theme. I had a hard time between this and the next one, but I choose this one because of how it takes pieces from SMW.

newdonkchallenge
Sounds a bit Kirby-ish, would be a cool urban theme.

koopaling
Could fit in a title screen or cut-scene, or something else.

Shining Beat
I didn't like some of the samples (the voice and another one), that's why it isn't higher.

Wario strikes again! - S Version
Would be better as a more direct cover of the original song.

smw autumn (here we gouhou)
Sounds more Touhou than Mario.

Power Flower Workout
Its various songs from Mario, nothing really to say.

72hospc
Sounds like a SiIvaginner high quality rip.

Super Mario Land - Chai Kingdom Battle Remix
Too noisy and loud.

Bonus
Weak version of the SMAS:SMB Bonus Theme.
Shining Beat – Yeah, this SML2 theme is one of my favourites so I may be biased. The sampling choice is almost perfect! If I hear correctly, this arrangement uses some semitones lower than original. Now it feels more chill, I'd almost forget some aggressive-looking stars are attacking my astronaut Mario all the time.

koopaling – Now that's a bop, well done friend. Nice integration of the SMB Underground!

smw autumn (here we gouhou) – Definitely a good remix effort, although I'm not a Touhou person I'll give it this, well done.

New Donk City – For me this mix works nicely, I always have fun seeing new takes on the Super Mario World leitmotiv.

Wario strikes again! - S Version – I would see it in some forest theme. The percussions are a bit busy to my taste but overall nice effort buddy.

Bowser's Last Stand! – Nice battle theme, although I'm not fan of this kind of atmospheres.

Power Flower Workout – I didn't get the purpose of this one. But it's a pretty good idea of remix, I indeed have heard influences from different tracks. I would have liked it to have a better mixing, since some volumes really were aggressive.

newdonkchallenge – Didn't think too much of this one. Song is nice but the instrumentation could use more love.

owtemmie – big disappointment, I was expecting some Temmie music's samples from Undertale...

72hospc – Very short track. I do not know the original. Ok I listened to it, this version sounds more like a port than like a remix.

Bonus – In fact I love it because I feel this entry was made by a person who knows little but wants to try his luck for funsies. Brotha I've done the same at last 72hospc. In my book you can't be ranked last ;p

Super Mario Land - Chai Kingdom Battle Remix – It's a very busy song, it's loud, it's all over the place. Chai Kingdom: Thanks I hate it. Although I acknowledge it took effort to come up with this, the instrumentation hasn't done the cut for me, sorry.

Man voting is hard, I take it way too seriously!
I wanted to cast an entry, too, but then I realized: I don't know how to re-arrange pieces of music. I'd attempt, in fact I had cooked a beginning of something about SMB3's overworld. Like I wanted to mess up with the flow of the song, the rhtythm. Maybe next time.

Edit: Usually I fear my tastes do not meet the consensus and that my critical mind is too different, so I'm happy in this present case there's no big consensus. I've seen some songs ranked top 5 or low 5 depending on my fellow users. Superb variation.
Shining Beat
Why is channel 7 even a thing? Other then that, nice Disco remix of the SML2 space levels! Good job with this one!

owtemmy
Ah, the NSMBU theme (an actually new theme in the NSMB series) but the synth and beat really makes the theme more exiting. Bonus level ahoi!

newdonkchallenge
Pretty nice remix if I think about it but there are some parts which I don't really like.

smw autumn
Hear the Touhou. Doesn't really help with my opinion, though.

New Donk City
SMW meets NDC, though I don't know if the SMW theme sound really well with an otherwise fine SMW remix of NDC. Don't really like the noise cymbals.

koopaling
Tune is nice but the other songs are better.

Wario strikes again!
Nice song but I feel like it can be improved in certain places.

Bonus
Pretty minimalistic SMB1 Bonus Theme. Sounds nice but something is still missing...

Bowser's Last Stand
I don't know... the organs don't sound really nice and those orchestral hits are more distracting than helping. Beat and bass is nice, though.

72hoSPC
It's Merry Go Rounde but extended. Not really sure how I should feel about it. The glockenspiel feels unnecessary IMO, though.

Super Mario Land - Chai Kingdom Battle Remix
Yeah... it doesn't realy feel with me. I don't know, something sounds off to me.

Power Flower Workout
You should have played with the volume as the music is just too loud. The Ocean Land remix is the best part of the song.

Super Mario Land - Chai Kingdom Battle Remix
1) Bowser's Last Stand! - Holy cow this is intense. The intro's like "now you've REALLY gone and done it" and the rest doesn't even stop to breathe as it runs you down. Rich and relentless, angry, with fantastic instrumentation and finer details like quick pitch bends and orchestra hit panning.
2) newdonkchallenge - The percussion and bass style are very Sonic Adventure-like to me. Really fun and upbeat song start to finish and like sugar to the ears.
3) Shining Beat - Very fun rhythm. Outer-spacey. A very clean-sounding and tasteful remix. I'm really into the bass, string ensemble, and synth samples used here.
4) owtemmie - Thunderous bass. Sounds like NSMB Eurodance. Pretty good mixing.
5) koopaling - Jazzy, with a lot of pep. The trumpet chords are fantastic. The piano solo drags it down a little because the sample is too weak to carry it but it's strong all around that. The SMB1 Underground bass is a neat way to wrap it up.
6) smw autumn (here we gouhou) - The SMW jingle is very subtly blended in with a different key and chorded. Hectic bass and percussion, lots of tense energy. Imaginative, substantive, ambitious, and a little overwhelming.
7) Power Flower Workout - There's a huge silence after the song from which it starts over. The mixing is very loud but well-tuned. I really like the bongo and slap bass parts for some reason - it provides just the right build-up to the melody punch. Nice steady pace.
8) 72hoSPC - The kachings are a bit piercing at :21. I feel like it should end on a slightly lower chord before looping, but the melodies of the two songs certainly fit well together.
9) Bonus - Strong rhythm and bass. Almost hypnotic. I feel like the intro is lacking something, though. It could be because of the instrument.
10) New Donk City - I am enjoying the whistled melody. It sounds like some parts of the song are off-key. The *KRSH* is painful to listen to.
11) Wario strikes again! - S Version - Sunny and catchy, but it's over before it begins.
12) Super Mario Land - Chai Kingdom Battle Remix - Chaotic and dissonant. Has the right energy but needs parts retuned to be compatible with each other.

Just look above you...
If it's something that can be stopped, then just try to stop it!

well, good luck everyone and have a nice voting
-Shining Beat - An excellent remix of a criminally overlooked song from a just as overlooked Mario game. I love how it opens up with an homage to the original track's instrumentation before going into the remix in full. Normally I'd be skeptical of the voice samples being used as extras, but they somehow work well here. I think it's because the song actually sounds a ton like a Sonic song in its instrument choices and general beat. It almost feels like a song that would be used if there was ever a "Mario Mania"! Love it.
-newdonkchallenge - What a cool take on New Donk City, choosing to create something that has almost a disco/techno vibe out of the original big band song. I basically like every part of the song!
-New Donk City - I really like this one for keeping a familiar New Donk City tune throughout while also adding in a bunch of other Mario themes. The only thing I dislike about the song is the noise hit that gets used as embellishment. I feel like it doesn't really fit the rest of the instruments used at all.
-koopaling - Really fun jazz/swing song with great development. There's just enough audible Mario motifs in the track mixed in with recognizable instruments that it really gives off a fun and upbeat Mario vibe. It feels very different from what you might hear in an official Mario game but it still feels like it fits nicely.
-owtemmie - I still believe that the NSMB series' songs have good and fun melodies that just got overused in those 4 games. But this remix does a pretty good job of breathing new life into an old song with a synthpop genre shift. Nice work!
-Bowser's Last Stand - Does a pretty good job of sounding like a "Panic" mode Bowser song. I like the part that goes from about 0:28 to 0:42, but I kind of wish it were longer, or that it came in earlier in the song to drive up the tension. Still a real nice song.
-Wario Strikes Again - S Version - I like this one for being short and sweet, with a simple melody and minor reference to SML2's stage intro music. It's nice.
-72hoSPC - This starts out as a pretty pleasant port of the original circus theme from SM64 with a few embellishments, but I'm not sure how much I liked the original section that was added afterwards. It doesn't really feel super cohesive and I'm not a big fan of the chords used in it.
-smw autumn (here we gouhou) - Despite its very active and uptempo beat, I somehow felt myself being a bit bored with it. I think it's because each section feels a bit longer than it needs to just by a little bit, while also being slightly repetitive in its individual melodic phrases. I think another problem is that aside from one very obvious SMW melody that was partially referenced, the rest of the song doesn't really feel like a remix of anything in particular. Though, I admit it could be a remix of a Mario song I don't know.
-Power Flower Workout - This one isn't doing it for me. I think there are too many very recognizable Mario motifs that are crammed into the song just to be there, all of them competing for the listener's attention. The instrument that comes in around 1:02 is also really high pitched and loud, and comes off as shrill instead of melodic.
-Super Mario Land - Chai Kingdom Battle Remix - Why does this song change tempo multiple times throughout? It feels almost random in its tempo swings, almost as though they were accidental. The beat is hard to follow because of it. As for the melody, I feel like there are way too many competing notes for the first section to sound like anything other than dissonant statements. It's too fast and too muddled to be enjoyable. Like, the first impression gives off a Mario & Luigi RPG vibe, and I think that might have been what you were going for, but its other problems keep it from greatness.
-Bonus - Too much drum and bass, the melody is just one voice and panned right for some reason instead of being audible in both left and right channels. It's not well balanced at all.
1. Koopaling: Pretty cute remix! At times it reminds me of Ice Climber for some reason. #tb{:p}

2. New Donk City: I really like how this sounds, especially considering it's unsampled.

3. owtemmie.spc: Very nice and catchy!

4. Bowser's Last Stand!: This is pretty well done. It feels like it ends too soon, but I don't know how to explain it properly. Still, it sounds good!

5. newdonkchallenge.spc: Another nice rendition of this song. I had to place it lower however, as I think the vanilla samples don't mix very well with the custom ones, and the Kirby flute also sticks out too much.

6. Shining Beat: The string chords sound somewhat off to me, as if they didn't belong there. The weird sound effects are also a bit off putting in my opinion. With that said, I really like the original song, so I can't place this too low either.

7. smw autumn (here we gouhou): I have a hard time recognizing the original here. The song itself is pretty catchy though! I don't quite like are the tempo changes though, and I don't know if they were intentional or if it's AMK lagging.

8. 72hoSPC: The samples sound great and clean, but I'm somewhat bothered by the wrong low notes at the beginning, which seem to be one semitone lower than they need to be. The accordion (?) sample also sounds a bit flat in terms of tuning. I don't mind the additional part though, except for the last note in #0, which sounds off.

9. Wario strikes again! - S Version.spc: Not too bad! But I can't help but being distracted by the low-pitched percussion samples, namely the snare and the bongo. Also, the fast note at the beginning might be a bit too fast, so it sounds almost as if the instrument tripped. The song itself sounds fine, though I would have liked it more if it were a bit more athletic.

10. Power Flower Workout: I like the @14 section, but there is little cohesion between all the different Mario melodies.

11. Super Mario Land - Chai Kingdom Battle Remix: Hmm... this feels very chaotic, but not in the good sense... there is a lot going on at the same time. The Megalovania parts feel very out of place for my liking, too.

12. Bonus: This is the polar opposite to Chai Kingdom Battle; there isn't a whole lot going on those three channels, and the melody being panned so hard to the right isn't very pleasant.

All the appropriate trophies have been awarded to everyone already. If you notice any errors, don't be afraid to report them. Beyond that, though, everyone did a wonderful job with the Mario mixes, and I hope our participants come back again for the 8th SPC contest! 🎉🎉🎉

How did the participants like the 48 hour extension? Is this something worth continuing with, or do you like the hectic, traditional 72 hours? Or do you not care how long the contest runs? Let me know in this thread!
I kind of feel bad for not winning this time because I looked hard for that prize. My participation on this contest was a mercenary run. Cannot say the results weren't fair, though, so congrats Hooded Edge for the 1st place.

Never been the kind of guy that cares about rewards more than everything. It's that my situation is hard right now, you know what I'm talking about. Accept my apologies.

And since it's been asked about the contest time schedule, well, that was my first participation on this kind of contest, and also first time being evaluated by people other than a set of judges. Anyways, traditional 72 hours should be fine since I managed to make my stuff in this time span. It's really challenging but I guess the fun comes from that.
MK2TDS
Damn I expected I wouldn't do good with this one but not that badly :x

Either way, congrats to all, especially the winners! The theme was pretty alright this time (yet not very specific), and turns out that there were some nice remixes out here. Didn't get very proud of mine though, I bet how I've ranked shows that up afterall.

As for the contest duration, the 120 hours format was fine but I'd probably lean towards the traditional 72ho one, that way it's more challenging and it potentially keeps me off procrastinating lol
I didn't make to top 3, but top 5 is still pretty nice!!! I was really happy to see some people voting my entry really high, considering I have so little experience with composing/arrangement and shaky tonality. (By the way, I hope SMB3 Bowser was noticeable at all throughout the bassline! 💦). I agree with some people that I should've extended the song a bit more, however. I guess I was a bit worried with time given how I've been submitting entries in the last second for contests heheh, or maybe I just feared making an uninspired section that'd feel more like filler. Seems I worried a bit too much for my own sake, lol. It's alright though, because all is experience and ultimately I'm proud with what I came up with in such a short time! Also, I'm open for feedback (on Discord), since I intend to upload it to my YT channel at some point and maybe submit it to the music section (if I ever feel like cutting on sample size <_< >_>).

Anyway, congratulations to the winners! I really enjoyed Shining Beat! I only wish the Come On and Who's Bad vocal samples were a bit less downsampled, so they'd sound more in line with the rest of the samples, but still, very good idea on using them to begin with!

I personally had way more fun (or maybe just less frustration, lmao) with these extra 48 hours to give me some brain room and time for my ears to identify the correct notes, since this was a challenge involving composition and arrangement on top of porting. If the general feeling is to reduce the time back to 72 hours, might I at least suggest the middle ground of 96 hours? I think just having 24 extra hours was already extremely helpful.
