Canceled hacks you loved.

I just really got nostalgia for Reading and the Spy Invasion, a puzzle/exploration hack with promising story, custom graphics, original character, and just dug up the thread only to realize the screenshots are all gone, there's no link to any patch, and the only way I am remembering it right now is because I was a beta tester... then just like that, poof. No way to experience it again. #fim{TT_TT}

Another hacker who went then by the name InvisibleCoinBlock, had a really promising Zelda-themed SMW hack with a lot of ASM work put into it to make it actually feel like a decently full-featured Zelda platformer - Link actually played like Link - that also disappeared. Azure Chaotic was another hack that was so different and advanced but with enjoyable exploration levels, not just an ASM exposé.

I can think of a few other hacks I found also inventive or inspiring, things that I am really eager to play or makes me want to pick up the tools and get to work more; makes me want to learn something. These 3 are especially vivid to me.

Does anyone want to take a moment to remember hacks you were really hyped about, and what do you have to say about them?

edit: WYE, thank you so much for sharing that site

Just look above you...
If it's something that can be stopped, then just try to stop it!
If we're talking incomplete hacks, the most nostalgic one for me has got to be the original Keytastrophe. I was at my most impressionable then, and it gave me a sense of wonder and excitement I still can't describe. I was absolutely hyped to hear news about it. (sorry SNN, you're part of my late childhood now.)

ICB's hack is one I'm not emotionally invested in, but it's a real shame to see any trace of it gone. I'm one of the few people - along with RPG Hacker, oh boy ask him about it - who'll remember.

Have I potentially got news for you! Since a couple of years ago there's smwdb.me, which hosts just about every patch that's ever been public. RATSI looks to be on there too (though I'm not sure which version), as does Azure Chaotic (of which I still have a copy either way).

Man, there were so many cancelled hacks I loved. One in specific was Makjang Mario - worldpeace lost it after making like 4 levels and it was one awesome hack that was "outshined" by the hack he would make afterwards (Cool or Cruel).

Soko also made clever hacks such as Foxtrot Uniform and Luigi's Breakdown that I would have liked to see released had he not cancelled them. These were promising.

I'm disappointed that The Tale of Elementia, Bonni's Quest, Mario's Keytastrophe, and New Super Mario Bros. SNES never got finished. And that SMW2+3 never got remade for modern systems.

I'm working on a hack! Check it out here. Progress: 64/95 levels.
There was one hack a long time ago now that that basically Castlevania Dracula X ported to SMW. There was even a somewhat functioning whip attack. I think it was pretty buggy and far too ambitious which led it to being abandoned. I don't remember who made it or exactly when it was being worked on. There never was a demo of any sort released either that I recall, so all traces of it have probably vanished other than its Works in Progress thread.

I should have something witty to put here (even if it's just to update dated info), shouldn't I?

Mario's Lost World is at the top of the list for me. There's a couple of others that I was really looking forward to, but I forget their names off the top of my head. (One of those was basically a sequel to Unknown Islands/z???)

Surprisingly, I actually also know the hack you an Cou are talking about. Also yeah it's very disappointing for it to just suddenly vanish away.

The Tale of Elementia

Same here, I'm still sad for it. For me it was always one of the most promising hacks back in those years. Same case for A Severed Freedom (actually I'm probably more sad for this one), Supertails really got a good style back then.

Honorary mention to VIP 6 which is most likely to never be finished despite being 99,99% done.

Like many of you who posted, Mario's Keytastrophe (the original) is definitely up there in the list for me. Used to get really excited with each update that was posted on that hack, it definitely had something special about it that I seldom see in other hacks. I really liked its dark aesthetics, the overall consistency of its OST, and how each level felt singular in its own way. I also admired the healthy balance between good level design and narrative elements that SNN often managed to pull off. To see that hack being completed would be a dream come true for me, no doubt about it.

Tale of Elementia also would get me eager. It was definitely a groundbreaking hack back then, and what was more fascinating about it was that there was no heavy programming involved in any of its level concepts. Just pure creativity and well executed level design.

Other than those, AtomicShroom's hack back in the day (can't remember its name, it was on work around 2008/2009 or something) was a huge one I looked up to, as well as Boingboingsplat's 'Super Mario and the Staff of Dreams', which looked really polished back then. There's definitely more, though... Super Mario TKO, NEONSwift's Super Mario Land 3 remake, andy_k_250's SMB:TWSS, just to think of a few more. XD

Mario Fantasy by Romi was something I would have loved to see finished. Just in the tech demos it looked like it would have been a marvel of ROMhacking but sadly it never materialized.
Maybe it's just the difference between my "childhood" and others', but personally, I was never too broken up about Keyastrophe being cancelled - yeah, it had some all right ideas and a very well-done atmosphere/presentation, but the actual level design really hasn't aged well.

Come to think of it, though, I feel like most hacks that get "cancelled" usually come under that same reason for me. Maybe I just have somewhat of a "trust the artist" mentality without realizing it, but if someone quits working on a hack because they weren't fond of their work, I tend to see what they mean. Most of my favorite hacks were fully finished and released.

The hacks for which I actually have nostalgia are much older ones, including Mario vs. Bowser (I think that's what it was called? The hack that inspired Keytastrophe in the first place), BMF's old hack, and a whole host of others. I recall that Keikonium was working on an ancient hack back when he was still in the community, and I remember him making this incredible overworld for the project that blew me away at the time. I wish I could pull that up now.

Mario Fantasy was cool too, but I seem to recall that as being less of a legitimate hack and more of a "hey we have custom music now, here are a few levels to show that off".

Yeah, back then, anything out of the ordinary was ground breaking for my younger self, to name a few: The Bramble Invasion by Black Yoshi, Mario's Journey by Shinoki, Mario's Exodus to Death by Soul2Limbo, Super Mario: The Cookie Crisis by yoshicookiezeus, Pokey's Adventure by WYE, SMW - A Saga de Luigi by Caio Gevegir, and too many others to list here which never saw completion.

I'm particularly fond of Mario's Journey for being such a beautiful and polished ROM hack with RPG elements and nice music selection. Definitely my reference when providing a consistent experience through level design and immersion!!

Hey thanks for letting me know about this! I’ve been looking for volpeys friend for a while to buff my cape skills and I couldn’t find it here.
Hmm from the ones I remember playing back then

Super Mario Odyssey
It looked pretty cool at the time, but that was a very long time ago. I don't know if it aged well. I need to replay it sometimes. Also Nintendo stole the name.

Stranded
Look so cute, had a lot of creativity, and at the time the ASM was amazing. Custom musics would have been great for it but that didn't existed back then.

Nador Quest and Super Mario Land 2.5
Not as well know, but it was made by a fellow frenchman and these hacks are important to me. Lexou is a very good romhacker and I loved all his hacks, but sadly he has many unfinished.

Well, technically, carol hasn't officially stated it was cancelled, they just don't have the time due to being married

But anyway, I kind of would have liked to have seen a finished version of Brutal Mario. If it does end up coming out I'll still play it. If it doesn't, oh well.

Mario's Exodus to Death also looked extremely solid. I still love the Royal Greens video.

I'm not sure if it was ever actually cancelled, but this one comes to mind. Looking back, I don't particularly like the graphical side of it, but I'm still very much in love with the custom-made soundtrack. Sad to see that all that effort has most likely gone to waste.

I'm with WYE, Keytastrophe was one of the hacks I loved back in the day. I have so much nostalgia for it and it helped me with getting the urge to make levels and what not. I know there's the new version, but it's just not the same despite its quality.
