A Plumber For All Seasons - World 4 Gameplay Footage

Super Mario WorldVideo/Trailer

(making this legit got me thinking a couple of times that this was the winter C3)

A Plumber For All Seasons is a hack I've been working on for (aaaaaaaaa) about eight years now. For those who haven't heard of it, the main premises are:
  • there's four main worlds, each in the same location but in a different season
  • I'm trying to make as many resources as possible myself — certainly all the graphics, a lot of ASM, and perhaps some music here and there. (psst! if you're interested in composing music for this hack, get in touch with me!)

After very slow progress building world 1 I've picked up the pace somewhat, and for the past two C3s I've managed to prepare trailer-like videos of one world each C3. That's one world every six months! Didn't think I still had that in me.

I wanted to get world 4 done in time for this C3, and I've more or less managed that — saying it's "done" would be a stretch because one level is incomplete and one is missing entirely, but luckily it's just about enough to compile a gameplay video! I had planned to make a shorter one this time anyway.

WARNING: snow effects may or may not be bad for you if you're sensitive to flashing lights. I honestly don't know.

If you like what I've been making so far, visit my hack thread after C3 is over for more or less regular updates! There's still a lot of things left to do, but a release hopefully shouldn't be too far off now.

Great work per usual, WYE!

I'm excited for this hack's release.
I can't wait to play this whole hack, WYE. My space BG has been updated to have the blue planet have the same shadows as the regular yellow planet.
Sooo nice to see this finally coming together! Always look forward to your gameplay trailer each C3! Everything looks amazing as usual. Love that underwater effect you did with the BG vertically stretching to look like a sheet of ice above the surface.

Out of curiosity, how much/what have you got left to do now the bulk of the level design is (presumably) complete?
WYE, with each showcase of this hack you continue to amaze me on what one person can do with hard work and effort. This hack has an incredibly unique art style and i really look forward to what's to come from this hack!
Currently working on:
Super Kekcroc World 4 (lol jk)
Man. And the old farts like you and I are still out here doing stuff. :P

As always, things are looking great. I can see why you've been on it for eight years. It all looks polished and fun to play. Keep it dude! :)

As always, the aesthetics in your levels (and overworld) look gorgeous, and that effect in the lake level is very impressive. What tou showed here also look pretty fun to play, too. I wish you good luck on finishing the hack :)
This looks insane!
Loving the fuzzy replacement #tb{XD}
But the underwater level looks a bit tedious to play tbh.
Could you maybe tone down the speed of the layer movement?
Can't wait for the final product #tb{:]}
Keep up the good work!

Everything shown there is awesome! I don't remember ever seeing things like the rotating layer in that underwater level clip before.

Keep it up, it's going to be one of the best hacks ever!
Thanks everyone! #tb{:)}

After world 4 there's still the final level and a bit of a special world, and when those are done, it's time for a little more non-gameplay ASM, a second pass to improve the early level's graphics, and also porting everything to SA-1. (not counting music and beta testing which I can't do alone.)

I'll definitely consider it. That might make the interaction slightly less buggy as well.

Hell, yeah! This is the first time that you are posting news on the hack at a C3 and I actually saw it coming and anticipated it! :O
Would you believe that? I'm actually capable of learning!

Don't actually have too much to say on the material itself this time around, though I gotta say that the snowmen (or snow people?) look pretty cool! I like them! #w{=)}
Feel free to visit my website/blog - it's updated rarely, but it looks pretty cool!
This hack is obviously quite beautiful, but I was happy to see how interesting the level design looks to me as well. Some levels seem to have a really solid flow to them, and it looks like the focus is gonna be on a more linear approach to design than an exploration-based approach, if I'm interpreting the gameplay video correctly. Looking forward to seeing this released someday!!
Great work WYE! Really want to play the full version, the aesthetics are really nice!
Just some Ys fan lol
Your aesthetics amaze me. I was observing the thread of your hack for a while, but I never had an opinion about the level design, but now seing everything in action, I must say: I'm very anxious to play the full hack. Excellent work there, WYE.#smrpg{:3}

Thanks again!

Yep, with a couple of exceptions I'm going for a linear experience, on both levels and the overworld. (Planning out nonlinear exploring-type levels always feels like a bit of a daunting task because I don't feel like level design comes all that naturally to me.)
But yeah, I hope to compensate with interesting and (hopefully) well thought out levels! Since world 3-ish I've more and more been getting the hang of this JUMP-style flow-based level design.

I appreciate all the custom sprite work you've done here, especially the big bumptys, snowmen, and all the custom graphics for it all! I like how they're all used in the gameplay as well. Do you have plans on releasing the ASM for some of these, when the hack is done perhaps?

Ahh, I was hoping there would be some kind of bonus/special world. That's cool to know and it'll be interesting to see. I eagerly await seeing progress on that too one day #w{=D}
