P-switch: The Rise of Mortis Ghost >> What is Happening?

MusicSuper Mario WorldScreenshots

First question that pops into mind: what happened to "the Ultimate P-switch Void" title? After a long while of developing the plot, I've decided to hold a twitter poll that decided whether to include the old subtitle, change it to either one of two other options, or have each subtitle site-exclusive. The result was the latter, and so SMWC has this new name in place! So no this isn't a sequel, this is still the same game just with a different title.

Second question: Where is the release? Unfortunately due to myself and Mellonpizza's busy schedule, we were unable to do anything for this year (which explains why there is no "TEAM NIGHTMARE Direct"), but the direct has promised more coming this C3 which is why I thought it was fair to make this thread. I'm aware people are eagerly waiting for what comes next after our previous project, Krack The Hack. I won't confirm anymore deadlines, but we are very much wanting to release this as much as our fans wait for the game.

Third question: Who is Mortis Ghost? Here he is in his full glory:

This is the main villain of P-switch: a giant X-switch angelic creature enacting on revenge. The name comes from the creator of "off". If you remember from the P-switch demo, Mario hits the P-switch Palace at the end and unleashes what would be known as the X-switch Void. This thing is that very location, ready to destroy the world since the palace is what kept this moon-sized monster at bay.

Enough talk... here's some screens on what has been at the works:

This is a blade that Mario can spinjump on, and it follows the player's position. (also is that retry???)

Instant-kill fire with a grand wave effect. Mario even screams when being touched by it! (P-switch is only used for demoing purposes)

Buffer-inputs return in P-switch, and it's much needed too considering you can explore Yoshi's island as the game expands more and more. It's handy for those who'd rather not press the directional buttons rapidly.

All four original P-rooms return as well, better than they've ever been before! One small note is these will differ from the demo version, as we want this to be as good as they can be.

Other little plans:
Since we're working on 100 Rooms as well, we thought it'd be fun to have Luigi be playable in this project too. The plot has both of them on screen at once, so naturally this would make sense as an addition. We have the ASM for him, so why not right?

Songs Made so far:
Brothers' in Arms - The title theme, currently not an SPC. Uses a bunch of leftmotifs from Krack The Hack (you'd know why if you played it).
POWser's New Grounds - The boss theme for POWser (yes he also returns as a minor villain).

One of the few reasons why we haven't worked on it as often as we like is mainly because...there will be a unique custom boss for this game. I am currently helping with creating it's attacks, but due to spoilers I cannot mention what this boss is. Me and mellon are working together to make this battle as good as it can be. There's a lot more than that of course, but again a lot of these details will ruin the surprises we have in store.

That's all I got for now. There will be more in store for the final release!
It's nice to see this hack keep getting updated! I remember playing the demo, and it was extremely weird but yet P Switch-y. I look forward to this insanity!
Currently working on:
Super Kekcroc World 4 (lol jk)
Well, that's some incredible creative plot and level design. I really loved the aesthetics on this one. Excellent work there, Daizo. #smrpg{:3}

I woke up to see something very fun! I was talking to you about this via DM but I love the moon sized P-Switch monster,

I kind of hope the boss is Mortis Ghost and that his boss fight is a Sonic Spinball type thing where you basically are destroying hte level to beat him.

You put so much work into these hacks and I'm really glad to see this coming to fruition.

My only problem is this clearly needs a sick video trailer like you did for mine ;)

Just the right amount of P-Switch in a hack!

This looks rather excellent and the aesthetics are lovely. : 3

what is this a whole hack about p-switches?

Gotta say though that this fire effect is really, really cool looking. So much better than just your standard lava rising etc. Really good job on pulling that effect off!
Quite the interesting P-Switch monster you've got on screen 1, DDV.
I should have known that you were behind it all... P-Switch... eldritch abomination octopus... guy!

This looks stupidly creative and really fun lol

allow shy guy emojis in post footers you cowards!
I think I played the old version of this since I remember a hack with levels being built from those huge P-switches... nice to see it returning a lot more menacing than I remember it. Mortis Ghost is like the P-switch version of Zero-2 in Kirby 64 - it looks kinda scary.

That fire also looks kinda scary - probably the best rendition of large-scale fire I've seen in SMW, and I'd hate to be under the stress of a timer to find another P-switch to prevent it from rising. (I'm getting flashbacks of the burning house in Indiana Jones's Greatest Adventures looking at this.) And sadistic you, you make Mario scream when the fire touches him? Such tension!

That P-switch blade and the way it suddenly shoots up: also kinda scary if not for how suddenly it rises.

That Brothers-in-Arms song sounds like Final Fantasy-turned-synthpop with a side of P-switch. It conveys adventure, mystery, and a sort of dark danger. Not scary, but tells you something scary could be around the corner.

Fitting that you've got the Nightmare Enterprises thing going on with your team name and avatar, as this hack, with everything you've exhibited, and seeing the whole world around you built as P-switches that could shoot at you, P-switches that could drop you into the abyss, P-switches that could crush you, P-switches stalking you - this is Mario's nightmare lived after pressing one too many P-switches. I don't think I foresaw this hack returning let alone go in this direction. Well done on establishing this kind of atmosphere without going the Halloween/Creepypasta route.

Just look above you...
If it's something that can be stopped, then just try to stop it!

Thank you. The demo will differ a fair bit from the final release, so prepare for anything!

Even though I question how you're seeing the level design from the screenshots, I think you mean that the ideas are solid...which thank you!

Thank you. I like myself some good ol' oversized monsters when I get the chance to create one.

I guess we will have to wait until then huh?

I wouldn't be doing myself any service if I did a bad job would I?

The release will have one.

Thank you! It took a fair bit of fittling to get the wave effect working for Layer 3 backgrounds, especially since Effect Tool didn't have a vertical wave for layer 3 (just horizontal for layer 3)

Thank yeah. Any excuse to make P-switches a central focus.

He basically is inspired by 02 so it's nice someone figured out the inspiration. I also took a little bit of inspiration from "One Winged Angel" too with the wings.

As explained, the fire took a bit of fittling to have it function. But yes, I made it so Mario (and Luigi) scream when being burned since sampling has become easier for me over the years. Nothing else makes Mario go "MAAAAAAAAAAAAAA" then being burned to death.

(Now if only I can find that one stock fire projectile sfx heard from here)

Yeah, which makes me all the more excited to design with it in mind.

I'm glad I conveyed the right emotion! Also helps some motifs are linked to the characters that'll appear. The only big part of the song I can't take credit for is how I mixed the leitmotif of "GoooO", which has a purpose as to why it's part of the theme haha.

The cost for someone to buy is 10,000,000,000,000.00 credit for this massive structure.

In all seriousness, thank you. Even though this isn't necessarily a horror hack, myself and Mellonpizza really do try to put our best foot down for these projects and to take our concepts the best way possible. This P-switch hack did start out as a joke initially, but it ended up becoming quite a spectacle and I can't wait to have it done. Of course, we aren't forgetting about 100 Rooms either, but considering this started before Krack The Hack (if I remember correctly), it's about time I give it attention and to truly finish it for all to see the full vision.

----------------

Something small to show off:

Pullet Pill Launcher now contains tiles from the P-switch, making it even more in-character!

I'm excited for this rom hack
Oh gosh, another thread I'm seeing way too late! This is the first time I'm seeing htis hack, and it looks absolutely amazing! The aesthetics here are just hilarious. I don't know what the hack's story is and don't even care, you've sold me on just the idea and the aesthetics alone. With a hack about cement blocks and a hack about P-Switchs, this C3 really seems to have it all.
Feel free to visit my website/blog - it's updated rarely, but it looks pretty cool!
The P-Switch series has been one of the more interesting series around the site. It has always been the most out-there concept, and that's why I kind of love it. It seems there's a lot of craziness prepared for this sequel, and I can't wait to check it out. Good work! :)

I never expected a sprite as mundane as a P-switch play a major role in a hack. I'm surprised you stuck to this concept (that X-switch gives me the creeps, lol), because P-switches are superior (to you).
Looking forward to see more, DDV! You're also making me anxious to watch that one custom boss (which is totally not another P-switch :p).

Are you planning to explore the P-switch timer, though?

This hack has been a thing for years, but always in Demo form. I'm glad you're digging this weird oddball idea of mine from like...2012(?).

It's the same game, not a sequel. But thank you for the complement! I guess you could call this "the original, with another campaign added".

That's where the idea came in: how much can I use the P-switch graphic? How much potential does basing an entire aesthetic on? Clearly, a lot.

Here's another couple graphical changes that I think are necessary.

I made it so the dragon coins look more like P-switches. The pipes have a more subtle nod, but I think the image speaks for itself.
