SPC Showoff & Feedback Thread 5.0 - The Phantom Pain

Hey guys.

So this lil fellow lost the 72hoSPC #6 contest because I didn't give it enough love.
I was trying to reproduce the Staircase Whip (youtube link) song from Boards of Canada, which is also kinda weird.

Is there an obvious way to improve that I've missed? Actually, would you appreciate a better port of this song or is it just yet another poor choice of target? :p Not sure if I rework it or let it die.

Thanks.
Staircase whip was really cool idea, but probably something better off avoided for a time limited competition. props to you for trying something cool and different.
I decided to try my hand at making my own composition. I wantd to make a ghost house/ship theme.

This is my first pass at it:

Sounds amazing (even more cause it's a first attempt)! Keep it up!

As for me I updated my Cynthia port a bit:

Cynthia.spc
So I had submitted an older version of this song, but now I'm considering holding the txt in case I'd use it in a hack first.
Nevertheless, the spc is available for listening here, in my file bin.
I loved it very much, and the fix I deployed works like a charm.

Here it is, I hope you enjoy as I do :)

@Brood Fours, I enjoyed the track but I feel you could toy a bit with the volume, since I got a bit of saturation. I see it fit in a ghost house, or a ruins level indeed; very good.

@Core I'm not the most enthusiastic fan of epic music, but your execution was on point. I can see a big boss fight. I think the boss in SMW are not as threatening as this music implies. So instead it could be some boss that's mechanic, or biomechanic even, and horribly hard.

Track updated at April 11th.
Edit : now comes with video
Hiya! Took my hand at porting and am pretty dang proud of myself! I'd appreciate an honest critique and any judgement you are willing to give. Tell me what I should do better next time :) <3

Ooh! I've been meaning to port this but your version is really nice! Some feedback though:

1. @29 for toms isn't bad but but you should lower them by one octave so they sound less like snares and more like toms
2. You should lower the echo a little but and remove echo on the percussion. It makes the mix sound a bit muddy

If you fix those two things this port is golden. #smrpg{<3}

I love this song! ...but you picked a doozy of a song for your first MML for reasons I'll explain in a moment. I am just learning this tool myself and took it upon myself this evening to try and improve it a bit (if I seem like I know what I'm doing, I've spent years making MIDI and I did some Famitracker too but AMK's still new to me). I like to learn by tweaking something that just needs a few changes to sound better. I might upload this one with joint credit if you're okay with that, or if you want to work on it some more, I'd love a longer or even more polished version to exist and maybe get picked in some hacks.

First it sounded like there was no percussion (turns out there was some inaudible percussion tracks in there but I already added mine at this point and had to delete it).

The other problem is the song is actually in 7/8(!) for the first 12 measures and the notes were entered as whole notes earlier than they should have been on certain tracks. If the rhythm seemed a bit off in the original, that's why! I actually didn't realize the song was 7/8 until I cracked into the MML and it was suddenly a lot more complicated than I thought.

(Just made a new thread in the Custom Music forum, but apparently I should put this here?)

Hi everyone. Just made my first spc song, hoping you will take a listen. (It's an original with stylistic features taken from SMW and SMS.)

Happy to hear musical suggestions, but I'm more worried about the tech/procedural side:

1. Any technical problems with it, or reasons it wouldn't work in a rom hack? (I'm very interested in music, not at all interested in level design, so I'm trying to avoid ever diving into LM myself.)

2. I was looking at the submission guidelines - is this "correctly optimized"? How can you tell?

3. What does Rule#5/Guideline#4 mean - "Your submission must include as many original SMW samples as possible." (This doesn't use any external samples, if that matters.)

Thanks everyone. I'm trying not to have my very first submission be rejected.

Tried my hand at a math-rock inspired piece that might work in a level, this is what came out of it. Any suggestions on how to optimize it/what hexcodes I might want to try to make the instruments sound better?

Text file's here.

I like it! I feel like @1 is missing some sort of sustain in the beginning, the notes are a bit too "sudden" if that makes any sense (sorry, I'm not really experienced with music to know the right terms). Still I'm always down for more unsampled Touhou ports, love the style.
It's easily the best thing I've done
So why the empty numb?
Well, I'm porting Brainiac Maiac from Plants vs. Zombies, well, the SPC is not over! So around minute 0:51, there will be a lot of timing problems and everything will go to hell! But hey.
Listen to this preview to see what they say!
I would appreciate if you told me what is wrong and what is right to improve! I've been porting for 3 months.
