2006 is an oddly specific number, wouldn't you say?

That being said... I kinda miss 2006. I was still in high school back then, and I had my moments there.

The video quality has improved for sure but old YouTube had a much more interesting culture

I don't know, I'd say that "culture" is still around. Just not as present as it used to be, because now YouTube has a way bigger user base, so there's different kinds of people there and thus different kinds of "cultures" that make up the site.

I'd say it's pretty much the same as with every hobby that starts out nieche and eventually goes mainstream. Take gaming for example. Originally, it was pretty much a nieche thing. People said that only nerds played games, and gamers eventually started to embrace that nerd identiy and make it their thing, forming a community of their own. Nowadays, gaming is more accessible and widespread, there's more types of gamers, and some of the gamers that originally made up this "nerdy nieche" don't like that at all, because they feel like their community was dying, when in reality, their community is still around and it's just less present because there's now more different types of gamers.

I guess my point is, when you actually look for the kind of community that YouTube had in the early days, you're going to find it. You might just have to look a bit harder, because there's now more other stuff that is different.
Feel free to visit my website/blog - it's updated rarely, but it looks pretty cool!
If I wasn't alive in 2006, shouldn't I not be here?

Anyway, I'll just say that I feel April Fools gets more and more disappointing with every year. I see less pranks/smaller pranks every year.
Hello.

Back in the days, it was very common to see videos on YouTube that were only a few second or a few minutes long, but nowadays, videos that are shorter than 20 minutes are quite rare.

It doesn't help that YouTube's neural network prefers longer videos over shorter ones so there is less reasons to upload short videos over longer ones.
Edit: Obsolete, a better list is 2 posts down. I would've done more, but I got bored and had stuff to do.
Hello.
On the topic of YouTube then and now.
I'd say that while I'm kinda nostalgic about certain aspects of old YouTube, it's pretty much nostalgia, I like how a lot of things had a really amateur vibe to it, I like that.

But... I'd be lying if I said I don't use YouTube even more now than back then. Many years ago, I used YouTube more to watch a few videos of speedruns, those MAD videos (which were often just NND re-uploads and whatnot), game related things (including commercials for some reason) and music here and there.
(I just mean a vague 2009 - 2014 era, not necessarily 2006, since I don't even think I knew what YouTube was at that point and I only made an account in 2012).

Nowadays, I listen to a lot more music on it.
And also, all the channels I watch nowadays regularly or semi-regularly are kinda new, except for raocow, who honestly gets better as time goes on, although I'm nostalgic for old raocow videos, I can't watch all of them since they have a pretty bad audio and video quality and his commentary feels less interesting in moments, but it's nice to see the contrast and/or get nostalgic once in a while.

Other than that, all the channels I like aren't really old.
I don't think YouTube has less good stuff nowadays than it did back then, you always had to do some digging to find something you like, the surface level stuff is pretty much always garbage.

As someone who think the whole thing is pretty dumb and pointless and also really dislikes pranks or anything similar, I'm fine with that.

I don't want to get into it, but I remember when the General Discussion page was pretty much dogpoo, and it's honestly really refreshing to just see how much more civil and substantial it is now.
There's actual discussion and less memes, hot takes and shitposts.

I missed some, but here are the April Fools tips I got.
Clickity! (I was going to put a rickroll here but decided against it)

That's a good amount of them recorded there.

And in the case some folks are interested, here's the official list of tips that were used. This should be helpful for historical purposes.

Those Tips are something else.

Tip: Are you still awake? It's 4:37 in the morning, go to sleep already.

I literally looked at the time right as I saw this and just realized it ACTUALLY WAS 4:37 AM.

Wow.

I don't remember much from 2006, but I was 4 and I was in kindergarten back then. How much do you remember from when you were 4?

To make a good point about tips, why don't we have one related to
Saint-Mary-of-the-Woods College
? Not having such a tip is a crime. It could be something like this:

Or:

I have a Discord server as well! (by joining, you agree to the rules)

Basically, I believe in peace and bashing two bricks together.

Having a tip like that would require context.

Jokes that require context don't go over very well.

I also realised that some of these tips didn't appear through my many refreshes yesterday and seem to be exclusive for today. Am I crazy?

Isn't this what everyone will get immediately? The acronym to the name of the institution is obvious.

Anyone who doesn't get it:

Hello.
I didn't get it immediately.

You can blame being up at 11am with no sleep.

Fun fact. Before April began (or should I say the time before when "normal people" wake up), we were all writing away at these tips and then I kept going getting more and more tired, as was bebn (and others). This and some many other tips were the result.

Lack of sleep opens up some...interesting results.
