The Sonic the Hedgehog Movie

Don't have any hope to a videogame movie, i already knew it was going to suck like the other videogame movies.

This isn't early 2019 anymore pal the movie's been really well received!

It's actually kinda funny to see the earlier replies to this thread being 100% convinced this was going to be absolutely horrible. Can't blame them though.

I thought it was perfectly acceptable. It's a 90's style buddy flick with Jim Carrey being full Jim Carrey and actually a good revised Sonic design.

I think they did the best they could with the Sonic ip. It's not a film I'd go out to see had it not been a nostalgia grab though.

Wait it was actually good? Welp, i guess Sega did what Nintencouldn't (Remember that awful Mario Movie when they we're called Mario Mario and Luigi Mario?)
Well, the main reason the movie was previously mocked was humanly Sonic design. It felt wrong without gloves and with furry blue arms, slightly different shoes, smaller eyes, and humanly teeth. On the other hand, this technique of animation is cheaper and faster.

Video game adaptations were usually unwatchable and that's why the Sonic movie was thought to become one of the worst movies of all the time.

For what it's worth, I think the Detective Pikachu movie was actually great (in case you want to consider that a Nintendo movie).

That's not really a fair comparison because that movie is like 25 years older.

And yeah Detective Pikachu was great.

I for sure enjoyed Sonic. Went in with friends just expecting to laugh a little bit here and there, got the laughs and even more. Definitely recommend giving it a watch.

I'm probably retired tbh
I've yet to see the movie, I'm quite curious to see what it's like.

I'll say, I liked Detective Pikachu, but it also wasn't like, spectacular or anything. Design-wise it was great, movie-wise it wasn't better than alright. imo.

Tip:
Completely forgot to post this the day after I seen it on the 17th of the month on Monday.

Went to see it with Katie and it was quite a blast actually. Wasn't expecting too much, but like it definitely exceeded some expectations which wasn't set too high so that probably helped.

Jim Carrey was a great Dr. Robotnik. Some say he Jim Carried the movie but I think all main characters played a good part to make it good. Sonic was portrayed well and isn't as experienced as one may expect initially seeing the movie. Which makes sense when you think about it.

And with how it ended, it certainly sets up the next movie well. I never did think who could be a good Robotnik but now that Jim Carrey played the role, I find it hard to imagine anyone else doing it live action.

To everyone who is waiting to see what others think, don't. Just give it a good watch and find out and go in with an open mind and not too many expectations and you'll find a fun movie that is way better than many expected. Not movie of the year by far, but it is certainly one of my more favorites I've watched recently.

So go ahead and give it a watch, reader!

My first advice to anyone ever regarding any new movie ever. I can't emphasize enough how much this has made movie-watching a more fun experience for me.

It was 'aight. Definitely gonna re-watch it when it goes to Netflix or Amazon.

I was expecting nothing more than a fun, decent movie and that's what I saw, maybe even a bit better than that since all of the main performances were good when I was only expecting that from Jim Carrey and Ben Schwartz. I enjoyed it, but don't plan to see it again for a while.

It was a fun movie not sure I'd call it great but it's a good family movie.
The poorly drawn sonic from the crazy guy got me a little and they did leave it wildly open for a sequel which I'm curious how'd they do one.

Perhaps Tails is there to bring sonic back to Mobius. Maybe time passes differently at his home world where not much time has passed, that's why Tails is 'still' looking for him. To Sonic its been years, but to Tails its been months? I don't know. Just throwing random ideas at the wall.

The writers seemed to have done their homework with the whole Sonic thing and past references.

(Spoilers) Like in Sonic X, 6 years passed on Earth, but only 6 months passed on Mobius. If Sonic aged like 18 years on Earth, its only been 1.5 years for Tails.

Sorry for nerding out, but it's something I recently thought of. lol

Watched the movie, enjoyed the movie, recommend the movie, and
super hype for the sequel oh my life (I don’t care this has already been said, it’s a spoiler damnit
bruh. sonic cd predicted the old sonic movie leak

Mod edit: table stretch kill.
I watched it last weak (now that it has been released digitally).

Not too much to say about it. I generally enjoyed it, though it didn't feel very "Sonic" too me. It was simply an entertaining and lighthearted family film, not more and not less. Definitely worth a watch.

Kinda unrelated, but I've always heard how Sonic was always super popular in the west and whatnot, and I never took it too seriously, I always thought it was an exaggeration.

But, these last few years I've learned that it's not the case, the series was indeed very popular and still is, which keeps surprising me for some reason. Even if I played some 90s Sonic games when I was younger, it was never my favorite series and I didn't really think the whole "almost as big as Mario" thing was ever too serious, honestly...

It feels like I lived a completely different reality or something. lol
I do appreciate the series a lot more now that I'm older though.

About the movie itself though, yeah, I haven't watched it, and I seriously don't feel like it's exactly what I'd like, it looks like a movie with Sonic in it, rather than a Sonic movie per say. I get that it's supposed to attract a new audience, but still...

It doesn't look bad for what it is, just not something exactly fresh or exciting.

I do think you were kind of right, actually. Sonic isn't... thaaaat big over here. He's still way less well-known than Mario or even a lot of other video game characters. That being said, he still has a good amount of popularity. Mainly among his long-term game fans, but also among a lot of people who simply played the Sonic games during the 16-bit days when SEGA was still doing great. I'd say he is a bit of a cult classic character. Not quite someone the entire world is crazy about, but someone who is generally somewhat well-known and is appreciated whenever he makes an appearance. He did even make an appearence in Wreck-It Ralph among some other popular video game characters.
