RIP Flash?

As I'm sure most of you know already, most browsers no longer support programs using Adobe Flash anymore, and by 2021 it will be apparently be completely dead, making Flash games and such permanently impossible to play. When I first heard this, I didn't really give a damn since most of those games I never cared much about, but it's starting to actually hit me just how many Flash games I can think of that I genuinely did really like, that I had a lot of fun playing in one way or another and would totally miss if they were gone. Newgrounds' solution has been to create their own application that lets you play Flash games on their site even after all of this, but the problem is that this only applies to games on Newgrounds specifically. Awesome games from other obscure sites that were never put on Newgrounds look like they're screwed.

I'm hoping one of you tech-savvy folks could help me out here. I tried to look for some other way to run Flash apps, but most of the grand solutions that come up on Google sound like bullshit to me, or just seem suspicious in general. Do any of you guys know of a way that Flash games can still be played, or is this really the end?

There is hope! Flash Player also comes (or well, afaik, came) as a standalone app, which would allow you to run SWF files locally. That's the solution. Flash for web is, afaik, going to die completely.
Flash games are pretty much dead anyways. I only recently felt like playing Bloons Tower Defense 2 just to see what the game was like back then, and it was just super bland. I can't think of any Flash game I'd actually feel like playing these days (does Agar.io count?).

Fortunately, there are already efforts to preserve Flash games, much like emulators already do with old computers/video games.

This one has been doing a really good job:

Yeah. It is both great we're moving on from flash and yet sad. Like living a bit of history behind. Flash has always been an odd one but I am thinking ultimately this will likely build the need for something even better to take over. Some security conscious people can take a good breath of relief though when it does finally end.

Okay, I'm gonna see if I can cram this post full of the most memorable Flash games which I'd still like to play every now and then.
  • :the game: series. Absolutely hilarious, though a mite dated. I highly recommend the creator, ncase, who does incredible things.
  • The Robot Wants series. God these are good, forgot about these though. Gonna replay now hahaha. Very highly recommended if you're into platformers. Bet you are...
  • Really anything made by jmbt02. Made the Achievement Unlocked series, There Is Only One Level series, Give Up series, anything to do with elephants, Hedgehog Launch, I owe a lot of my childhood to this guy.
  • Metro Siberia and its sequel for nostalgia. The music of both are incredibly moving for incredibly different reasons (the guy who composed the music for the first game makes breathtaking art, one of my favourite artists), and the graphics are cute.
  • The Super Crazy Guitar Maniac Deluxe series. I linked the 3rd game because I can't believe how much I played that, but there's 4 of 'em.
  • Mario Remix, Mario Remix: Boss Edition and Mario R3mix. Are you a bad enough dude to rescue the princess? Especially the boss rush game I've played a lot, loved it.

There's a lot of invididual games still that I didn't mention or forgot to. And don't forget, this is just games; there are countless amazing animations, though mostly on Newgrounds, which seems safe for now. I mean, Super Mario Bros Z is a classic.
Exodustx0: And let's also not forget high-profile stuff like Super Mario 63. I also personally used to be a huge fan of those obscure "escape the room" flash games. Some of those I'd miss a lot for nostalgia if they were gone for good.

If this is the really best option, then that's fine I suppose. My problem with massive "archives" like this is the fact that no matter how expansive the library strives to be, there will always be games that were missed that might have been worth checking out. Flashpoint has almost 40,000 games on their archive, but when I went to the master list and ctr+f'd for some games to see if they had certain ones there, most of the ones I tried searching for weren't on it.

Actually, is it possible to download an SWF file from a webpage? Maybe I'll try and contribute some games to the project.

Yes, it's generally really easy to find a direct link to the .swf file in page source or by inspecting the element. And you can directly download it from there. I've never seen that not work.
Fellas? No mention to Mario Flash 1/2?

It's easily the best thing I've done
So why the empty numb?
I can’t believe nobody mentioned Mario Combat :(
Is there a way to use SWF files after it'll be completely obsolete?
At least for right now Yes there's a way you just have to download the standalone player for flash.
tbh Sky Island from Kongregate
HackPortsASM"Uploader"

Fortunately, Edge still runs Flash so it looks like it's still possible to run those games before the year ends.

...So for the time that's left, I'm gonna try and make the most of it. You guys have already mentioned some great Flash games from the past, what others do you guys like/recommend? I think the Impossible Quiz series is also definitely worth mentioning.

E: In fact, I'll even stretch the horizons a bit further to say that they don't have to necessarily be "good" Flash games, as long they're "classic" in one way or another and could be seen as nostalgic.

I heard of stuff like Mario Builder and even Lunar Magic before I started playing SMF but my family at the time only used Mac computers so I could only do online stuff. I had so much fun with those games back in the day.

Super Mario 63 is also a fun flash game.
Has nobody on this thread ever heard of flashpoint...?
It's a project aiming to preserve every flash game ever made. It's really worth looking at it.

As cool as Flashpoint is as a concept, it's not exactly feasible when the download size for it now is already over 200GB, and they're still planning to add tens of thousands of new files to it.

You can just download the launcher, and individually download each game (I think) from the launcher. So you don't need to download such a huge amount of stuff

That does sound interesting. As long as it is done in a proper way I definitely don't see any problem with it.

I am still curious if there will just be a big flash replacement that pops up, offers a way to import projects to this newer system and becomes easy enough to work with and not as insecure and problematic. Who knows?

lol I have a similar thread too

What NTI Prod. said about this, I suggest using Flashpoint by yourself. (WARNING: The Ultimate package is about 200GB+ large!!!)

Also, it's featured on Kotaku, too.
