TIME UP, GO VOTE!

What better way to celebrate the death of a music contest with another music contest?

Challenge: Make an unsampled port of a song from another video game that predates Super Mario World's original Japanese release date, that is, November 21, 1990. As long as the game's original/initial release date and the presence of the song within the game predates that date, then the song is eligible.

Rules:
  • Noise (nXX), ADSR, and #instruments are all allowed. Any other hex commands (vibrato, echo, etc.) are allowed as well. Just don't use any custom samples (i.e. samples not already in AMK's default or optimized folder)!
  • Your song must work with the latest version of AddmusicK. #default / #optimized are not required, nor are global songs, SFX or optimization; if it inserts, it's eligible. (Though it's probably not wise to omit SMW samples when the challenge is to port unsampled #smrpg{sick})
  • Send submissions to me, bebn legg, via PM on the site, or via DM on Discord @bebn legg#0086. The submission must be a .zip, .rar or .7z archive containing your .txt file and the generated SPC. If you have to make an update, send me a new PM or DM.
  • Automatic porting programs such as SPC2MML are banned, although considering the nature of the contest, you most likely won't have a use for them anyway. #smrpg{mlem} (PetiteMM and IT2AMK are legal, however)
  • When submitting, tell me the name of the song and what game it's from.
  • EDIT: Before I forget, it goes without saying, but all entries should be ported specifically for this contest. No using past unreleased ports!

EDIT: Clarification on remixes/arrangements:

To a certain extent, yes. Adding extra flourishes or background melodies and the like is allowed (and encouraged to make ports sound fuller). But for the most part, the song should remain the same. The melodies and tempo and so on should not be too significantly altered.

Here's an example using ineligible songs, taken from #music earlier.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles - Lava Reef Zone Act 1 to Sonic Mania - Lava Reef Zone Act 1 would be allowed since the only changes are instrument changes and a few extra flourishes, alongside very subtle beat changes.

Super Mario 64 - Slider to Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games - Slider would not be allowed because the song has new sections in the intro, sax/guitar/piano solo, and preloop section, alongside noticeably different background melodies at parts.

Ultimately, don't be too worried about disqualification if you port simply suffers from slight inaccuracies due to say, undecipherable percussion or a crappy VGMusic MIDI, or if you just liked a certain chord better in one place. A few changed notes here and there are perfectly fine. But don't go out of your way to make it a remix and recompose half the song either. Hopefully this clears things up!

As voting will be public, do not reveal your entries to anybody else! This goes for posting in Discord, in the forums, or even in the SPC tags of the song.

Breaking any rules will lead to warning and/or disqualification.

The submission period ends on November 25th, at 23:00 GMT (or 15:00 PST, 18:00 EST, or November 26th 0:00 CET, if you prefer).
After the deadline, all the entries will be compiled and posted here. Voting will be open for 48 hours following it, from November 25th to November 27th. More information will be posted when it's time!

Of course, your efforts aren't for nothing! You're already making lovely music, which is something in of itself, but for those who want even more, then we've got

I think that should be it. If you've got any questions, don't be shy to post them in this thread or DM/PM me, I'll be happy to answer them! Until then, feel free to discuss Things in the thread, just make sure you don't spoil your entries!

But of course, I will get started on "Things" right away!

EDIT - I came up with a question after posting and I can't double-post aaaaa please read
Okay so, does this particular challenge require the port to be as faithful as possible to the original, or can there be slight (or heavy?) rearranging?

EDIT2 - yes hi, me again! What if a game is released on "November 1990"? Is it eligible?

Please do not send me the entirety of AMK's default folder, thanks.

Additional harmonies and slight rearranging are perfectly fine, and in fact, encouraged, to give the ports more richness. That being said, it shouldn't be a full-on remix though.

Yes, as long as it's before the 21st. So anything released on the 21st or afterwards is not eligible.

Unfortunately, no. I'll mirror the music section's guidelines in that regard and stick to AddmusicK 1.0.6. Sorry!

EDIT: Just to clarify, this is level the playing field and make sure everyone's using the same version of AMK.

Nope! I didn't take part in this contest. So I'll be voting instead. Here we go...

flash.spc - Wow, you work fast... and this sounds super good! The pitch bends and volume fades are pleasant to listen to, and it almost sounds like a rock song. Very good @17 and @9 usage I must say. Amazing!

Doki Doki Panic - Ending 2.spc - This is a joyful sounding tune! It reminds me of the original SMW's credits theme. Everything is mixed in really well. The sample choices are really good too! Very well done!

zantkntttata.spc - The volume mixing might be at it's best here, so that's neat! The @14 really slaps *giggle* and the @1 with the echo is really satisfying to listen to.

spaceharrier.spc - This one is quite enjoyable to listen to! Those might be the best lead @6s that I've ever heard. Must be the echo making them sound so bright. Great chords too. Very clean and consistent work!

skyshark1.spc - That's some sweet usage of the SMW samples. Parts of this hardly sound vanilla at all, which I really like. Also, arpeggios galore! Only thing I feel could be changed is the @0 kick's pitch bend which seems too large. Even then, this is some good stuff.

Batman - Stage 2 (Chemistry For Beginners).spc - I really like how the chords sound here. Makes the whole thing sound epic! If there's one criticism I have, it's the lead ADSR. I wish it had more punch to it. Otherwise, really good!

mm2_wind.spc - This one's cool. Good sample choices + custom ADSR values too. Huge delay value for the echo, but it works. My issue with this port is the mixing. You have these are the lead sections, like the @4 and @0, and they are SO LOUD!!!

steel.spc - This sounds like a very odd sounding song, but in a good way! The custom ADSR is appreciated, even though it's literally the same values spread out on every sample. The echo is really muddy, so I can't really give this much praise, but it's alright.

Let Me Know The Truth.spc - Hmmm... no custom ADSR? Oh well. You know, this is pleasant to listen to despite having the default SMW values. The @13 sounds too muddy however, and it barely fades in volume when I feel like it should.

004_mus.spc - It sounds good. I feel like there's missing potential seeing that there's two channels that went unused. Would've appreciated more layering. Also it's all mono.

72hoSPC.spc - I like the @1s... just wished it wasn't only present in the intro. The @17 doesn't sound great to me, especially when it get to it's highest notes where it starts to sound dissonant. That @17 channel probably would've sounded better with the PMod effect or some clever mixing.

Mega Man 3 - Wily Stage 1 (16-bit).spc - The thing I don't like about this is that it doesn't push the boundaries. I know you used echo, but it's so weak. There certainly could've been some more potential with some higher echo values. I'm not too blown away by the sample choices, but at least they're serviceable choices.

Castlevania - Stage 2.spc - The sample choices are very all-over-the-place to me. I appreciate the layering, but most of these don't go together at all. I think it has to do with the channels being at wrong octaves maybe? Pseudo-echo would've likely sounded better here. Drumbeat also sounds very spaced out. I don't think $F4 $02 was used here. Sorry, can't help but say it sounds bad.

Shadow Man.spc - I'm kind of irritated by this port. It sounds like it's half chiptune, and half 16-bit arrangement. This middle-of-the-road clash is really bad and awkward. Try again!

I don't really have knowledge of how custom music porting works, or the technical terminology used for it, so a lot of my votes are going to be based on just how I felt things sounded in comparison with the original track (if I could find it) and my own general music knowledge.

1. skyshark1.spc - Loved it, loved it, loved it!
2. flash.spc - I have no idea what game this is from but I really like what's going on in it! It's varied, fast, and sounds very impressive!
3. Doki Doki Panic - Ending 2.spc - I really like the extra flourishes behind the melody in the first section. The instrumentation makes the song really sound like something Nintendo would have composed for a SMAS-style re-release of Doki Doki Panic.
4. mm2_wind.spc - A really good port of Air Man's stage! I have no complaints here.
5. Let Me Know The Truth.spc - Nice quiet song. The echoed notes at the beginning in the original aren't really represented here well, but I like how this port feels a lot softer than the original thanks to new instrumentation.
6. zantkntttata.spc - Something about the bass line doesn't seem right when transposed here. I can tell it's not a volume issue because in the original the bassline and melody are about equal volume, but I think the instruments used there somehow make it sound better than in the port. Here, the heavy bassline feels slightly overbearing or too strong compared to the rest of the parts of the song, and I think it hurts this otherwise interesting port a little. That said, there's a lot to like in the rest of the port, so well done.
7. spaceharrier.spc - The melody line feels a bit quiet against the harmony line, but this is still a nice port.
8. Batman - Stage 2 (Chemistry For Beginners).spc - Seems pretty good to me. Has a bit of a different feel than the original, but I think 16-bit instrumentation will do that.
9. 72hoSPC.spc - Sounds a bit slower compared to its original but still nice.
10. steel.spc - I like the effects on the notes, but I don't really know what game this is from to compare to. It's okay.
11. 004_mus.spc - No clue what game this is from. It's not bad, but it doesn't sound like anything amazing to me.
12. Shadow Man.spc - The whole thing sounds a bit muddy and quiet to me
13. Mega Man 3 - Wily Stage 1 (16-bit).spc - Percussion is very empty compared to the original, and the song doesn't feel as interesting as a result.
14. Castlevania - Stage 2.spc - Pretty quiet, feels a bit empty as well, and I think it's because the percussion sounds really weak compared to the original. I know the original song is a bit more subdued than the bombastic Stage 1, but the port seems too subdued.
I'm probably not the best person to judge these, but I'll give it a shot!

spaceharrier.spc: I really like this! I wasn't sure at first, but it grew on me really fast. The delayed @6 works really well!

flash.spc: I love catchy songs! This sounds great overall, though it's a bit on the loud side.

zantkntttata.spc: Even though the echo is excessively high for my liking, I still think you did a good job with this! I might not have used @12 as the Toms, but that's just me.

Batman - Stage 2 (Chemistry For Beginners).spc: The intro is a bit empty, but it gets better late on. Pretty nice!

skyshark1.spc: I can tell this one has quite a lot of effort put into it! I'm not the biggest fan of the song itself mostly because it sounds like too many ideas were thrown together with not much cohesion, but I reckon that was a trend back then.

mm2_wind.spc: The arrangement is super nice! The $EC effect on the main melody sounds a bit weird, however.

Doki Doki Panic - Ending 2.spc: This one also has a nice arrangement! That said, I think the vibrato should be toned down; it's too strong, and I don't think it adds much to instruments like @3 and @9. The volume on the @4s should also be toned down, since it's such a loud sample to begin with.

72hoSPC.spc: I think this one would benefit from more instrument variety, but it's not bad at all.

004_mus.spc: The higher-pitched @29 sounds a bit weak, and it would have been nice to add some panning and perhaps a couple harmony channels. The first 30 seconds sound really cool! After the loop it does get monotonous though...

Let Me Know The Truth.spc: The intro could've had a more pronounced volume fade, and the echo makes the @13 drown slightly, but it's not bad. A few extra channels would've made this better.

Mega Man 3 - Wily Stage 1 (16-bit).spc: In general, I think this sounds a bit too dry and somewhat empty too.

steel.spc: I'm not sure about the ADSR choices; they kind of make the whole port sound weak since it's used in almost every single channel.

Shadow Man.spc: Hmm... it's alright I think, but I wish it had more to it since you're only using half the channels the SNES gives you.

Castlevania - Stage 2.spc: The slow vibrato on the @0 makes it sound out of tune more than anything. I also feel like the instruments don't mesh very well together.
1. skyshark.spc - Tim Follin is bae

2. zantkntttata.spc - Very lovely and atmospheric

3. Batman - Stage 2 (Chemistry For Beginners).spc - I really like the percussion work on this one and in general it slaps

4. flash.spc - Oh look a port where @9 doesn't sound like shit

5. steel.spc - I like the very spacey and chill vibes this song provides. It's unlike any unsampled port I've heard before

6. Doki Doki Panic - Ending 2.spc - This is way too loud but otherwise it's a great sounding port

7. 72hoSPC.spc - Thanks for showing me a way to do unsampled toms without them sounding like ass (Also this port is pretty good!)

8. Mega Man 3 - Wily Stage 1 (16-bit).spc - Not much to say about this one, it's alright

9. 004_mus.spc - The snare sounds like it's pitched a little too high but otherwise this one is alright.

10. mm2_wind.spc - This could have easily been in my top 3 but you didn't include the harmonies for the main melody and the @4 and high @0 used for the melody don't sound good to my ears at all. It's also pretty loud.

11. spaceharrier.spc - Eh I'm not feeling this one personally but it's not a bad port

12. Castlevania - Stage 2.spc - This port could benefit from being louder and having some better instrument choices, but other than that this one is ok

13. Let Me Know The Truth.spc - This one seriously needs some ADSR

14. Shadow Man.spc - I don't even know the original song but this port is beyond empty sounding

to hear birds and see none.
feels weird not being the one hosting this and actually having to vote. huh.
  1. flash: pretty song... hectic strong song... really good given the timeframe and how fast you'd have to work to port a very technical song like this, it's really impressive!
  2. spaceharrier: i love the space harrier theme so much!!! i like the instrumentation here so much, compounded with some really nice (fake) echo really just makes this a joy to listen to in smw's samples! i'd put this at the top, but i appreciate the effort put into flash just a bit more than i appreciate..... well, space harrier and how much i love that song ehehe - in conclusion, i want to print out the mml and kiss it, so please release it when voting ends thx
  3. 72hoSPC: life force!!!!! the vanilla samples really do this song justice. i also love it when @17 is mixed quietly enough that it works with layering without being loud and center like those classic 2009 ports (i'm guilty of it so i'm allowed to make fun of it).
  4. Batman - Stage 2 (Chemistry For Beginners): sunsoft.... the pitch bends are slightly incorrect, and don't gel that well with the echo, but screw it because it works in its own little unique way.
  5. zantkntttata: you had my attention with the intro. this song is really, really pretty - the bass also sounds really nice here!
  6. Let Me Know The Truth: i personally feel like the instrumentation is a bit too soft for its own good (the main melody could've at least benefitted from being @1 or something), but..... what you have is still good, too. this song is really pretty. final fantasy 3 had really good music, and i like the bold choice of going for this song above other songs in the soundtrack!
  7. skyshark1: solid song, i appreciate the pitch modulation bass though i feel like it could be louder, i don't like the layering effect that it has with the @4 on channel 1, though. but, still a good port. (unrelated, when i was like 14 i saw this game at a goodwill for like three dollars and i didn't buy it but like five years later i learned tim follin scored it and regretted my decision)
  8. Mega Man 3 - Wily Stage 1 (16-bit): such a good song. a nice port, too. not much more to say, other than "good".
  9. 004_mus: sfskghfghfsjkgkds i know this song, but i can't put my finger on it. either way, solid song, instrumentation choices work really nicely, though the percussion could afford to be pitched a tone or two lower, really high snares just sound like boring pops to me, i dunno.
  10. Doki Doki Panic - Ending 2: its a bit loud, especially in the first half, but the second half sounding as cute as it does deffo makes up for that. like gifty said, definitely harkens back to the original smw credits lol
  11. mm2_wind: another song where i personally disagree with the instrumentation, but it works out really well in its own right nonetheless. except for the @4, that stuff is made of good vibes.
  12. steel: good. i hate ranking this as low as it is, because its a cute little song, but it didn't really hold my attention. could be good background music in a hack, though, but for pure listening..... ehhhh.
  13. Shadow Man: i don't like the @1 being as high or as loud as it is from 0:04-0:09. the percussion sounds really quiet too, mostly during the second half. all that said, i don't dislike this port, but it could use a bit more polish.
  14. Castlevania - Stage 2: ehhhh. the instrumentation and percussion are kinda lackluster. the arrangement's also incorrect as well, but overall this isn't a great rendition of stalker.

i really liked the turnout of this contest! so many songs were absolute bangers, and thanks a lot to bebn for hosting in my stead!
