evilkingbowser, it is highly likely you may have seen a couple of vblank overflows, though i cant actually see one where the bobomb explodes. they're not that common in game, but do happen. i've looked/looking into getting it fixed but i've done what i can to minimise it at least, though not sure how to go about fixing it for good.

that weird sewer and warp pipe is gone and now we have this cool teleport blob thing and we jump out of the paintings instead of coming up in the middle of grassland nowhere
So sick!! I love the teleport void idea, it's like Mario is entering an alternate dimension. Nice touch with the pushing too.

What are those purple collectibles at the top of the screen? Are those world-specific coins like in Super Mario Odyssey?

It's a somewhat late reply but congrats on releasing the demo.
From what I've seen it's went down and been received quite well so you have really have something to be proud of.

The latest updates and progress from what I've seen all look phenomenal and really keep true to what makes Mario be Mario.

The new warp looks quite smooth.
Curious to how you made the paintings look they way they do as it seems that it would be either a easy or hard process to condense the level image down to that size.

@1UPdues: thanks (also a very late reply lol). The paintings were done by screenshots from the transition level, and condensing the colours down with some paint.net function.

@erpster2: uhhhhhh nothing since my last post, but it's not dead. i'll maybe start looking at this again in october maybe. chances are, there won't be another demo. i doubt it'll be done for c3 winter either. but there'll be more soon #tb{:]} your post prompted me to post and reminded me this thread existed lol.

so actual progress time.

after like a period of, i think six months(?) i decided to work on this again (or at least decided actually maybe let's aim for a release next c3 and stuff but probably won't happen). i already had world 5's details ironed out months ago but it was just a case of pulling it together!

with our penguin friend then, i present Frigid Slopes 1 - a cooligan filled level with slippery ice and not-slippery snow. cooligans come out of pipes and maybe go back in pipes if i tell them to or just slide on to their unavoidable doom.



the pretty foreground is provided by hinalyte of whom i stole from their hack (jk i asked if i could use it and he said yes). enjoy!

oh i never responded to what those purple coins are! basically i was playing sm odyssey at the time and thought regional coins would be cool to have in some form, so i did that. they're not quite like odyssey, here they're infinite (well, up to 999). when you're in each world a 3-digit counter displays on the status bar for it's coins and that's that really. with the coins, you can play pay-to-play toad mushroom house minigames on the overworld (basically gambling lol) and win lives or power ups (planned ow inventory system but gonna take a while because the ROMs a fragile fuck).

oh and i'm working on a proper soundtrack for this thing so smas music will be gone eventually too.

falls under the bracket of "won't happen". however, i'll have something regarding this at c3 but it will probably just be screenshots.

i've had a lot of ideas recently, replayed the last demo several times to figure out what's good and bad etc. so, i'm at a point where i've literally got to rebuild the rom's and levels from the ground up, but it's going well so far. some levels will be ported over, some will be culled and replaced with better ones, some will just be modified a little bit.

watch the c3 forum for info/showoff on that kinda stuff.

I've actually been making some progress over the last few weeks... months, or however long! I've been in the process of rebuilding the ROM from scratch with a musical, graphical and ASM overhaul and everything is going to be so much better, whilst still keeping inline with the flavour of the demo from over a year ago.

No level updates right now. I've been dropping some updates/progress here and there in #showoff on Discord. But I'm going to collate a few things here for you forum people too.

First thing to note is I've renamed the hack to: Super Mario: Stellar Rescue. We're still rescuing Daisy, so we can have a "spicy variation to the traditional Nintendo plot", but I just didn't like the old name. "Stellar" is for stars, and the focus remains that you gather power stars from the end of each world to power a ship to reach Bowser's Lair. Now, the ship is the S.S. Starshroom - a boat captained by... Captain Toad!



Here are some visuals I recorded earlier.


New Nintendo Presents screen. In game this has a "honk honk" sound too. Because, you know, personal branding and all.



title screen. there's an easter egg here that happens when you 100% the hack (fully 100% - all star coins, all exits, all hidden marios).



I've simplified the hub, made the castle gardens nicer and more ambient (this is the "music" for the castle garden, tweet tweet). bebn legg kindly drew the castle window for me to add some "aesthetic".

Customised cinematic cutscenes that'll be used in the intro, but not heavily. Just to kind of give you the idea the story of the hack and introduce it.



Oh, and no more overworld! Fully vibrant and crazy level select screen, and also showing item select screen which you can collect through ways I've not quite decided on yet (it'll be something to do with regional coins shown previously, but I've got to outline the specifics still).
I know there's a lot of powerups there, and the second image shows how they appear when you haven't got any (grey) or have never seen that powerup before (shadow). Similar to NSMBU, some of these will be bonus ones that you can get in the bonus world(s) or something. Gotta work that out too.
Oh - and I'm not ripping off YI with the level icons. I just haven't got real ones yet and they're placeholders don't @ me.



That's all. One day, I'll finish off everything and port over some levels and kill off bad levels and make new ones.
Wow, this looks incredible so far! The new menus, the environments, the NPCs, everything looks absolutely phenomenal. Gonna follow your progress very closely from now on. Really loving what you're doing.

Today I spent some time porting over the first level. I'm porting over the levels by hand, so essentially recreating them, but they will generally look similar and have the same themes. Some of the levels from the original demo will be killed off and be replaced with new ones. Since there's a fixed eight levels per world, there's room to create more new levels too (got a level with Waddlewings planned for later in world 1 which will be brand new, for example!)

So, here's a (newer) first level:

Purple Coins are the regional coins as mentioned previously. Forgot to add finished design of these into the status bar so excuse the big purple circle lol.


Swapped the SMB3 bonus FG to a custom one. A lot of the graphics come from a user called on Shikaternia on MFGG. I stumbled across their graphics when doing my CLDC level last year, and knew that was what I needed for this hack straight away!


Vine access bonus area. Finally I created a perfect vine climb in entrance!


I overhauled the red coin system ages back, but never put it here in the thread. Now I can set three levels of prizes per level, and they fall like an item box item from SMW does.
Essentially you can get a Mushroom if small, level defined powerup if big. And if your powerup is already the level defined powerup, you get a 1up fall instead!


Not much different about the goal flag really, apart from its design is more MM style I think?


Overall the level stays faithful to its original design with a few tweaks and new bits. The OP in the thread has its original original design, so compare it fully to that if you want. As far as levels go, its a bog standard first level with nothing major, complex or exciting about it lol.

Oh, I should also add worlds are now played in order and not in whatever order you want because I changed my mind on that since the demo.
