Link Thread Closed
You can use this thread to discuss the contest and ask questions about the rules, resources, or anything else related. Have fun making your levels!

This thread isn't where you submit your final level! Use the Submissions and Rules Thread for that!

*melts into a puddle of stress*

God this was tough to put together. The last two days have been super stressful getting it all prepared. This was much harder to do than VLDC, CLDC, or OLDC let me tell you. Those contests sometimes have base roms but they don't actually have custom parts in them, just fixes. We had to organize everything for this contest, get it all to fit in there, do testing, more testing, not enough testing...

Here's hoping it goes well. I'm already dreaming up what we could add for a BLDC2.

In short, you pretty much have full freedom to manipulate the graphics found in the base rom. Mixing, flipping, rotating, recoloring, and merging are all allowed, just like they were in VLDCX.

This one sentence made me so happy and excited.

I accidentally posted this on the Rules and Submissions page first sorry

Why aren't there .mwt and .mw2 files for the custom sprites?
It makes it way more annoying to isnert them in your level because you can't just use LM's Custom Collection of Sprites list.

I'll pass this to Major Flare since he set up the rom and did sprite insertion.

You are not allowed to bypass the 600 second limit in any way. This includes exploits such as setting the Timer to 0 and resetting the Timer when switching sublevels.

what about green berries
We never actually banned green berries in VLDC11 and I don't want to do so now, but understand that abusing it will probably make the judges side-eye your level and/or lower the score.
So firstly, I have to honestly say that I was really excited about this contest. There was a lot of speculation regarding what this event was about, and the general name of the contest itself- the Base ROM Level Design Contest- is interesting. And now that I and many others are able to see what this contest is, I certainly feel both ecstatic and content. And though I am going to be busy for a long while, I will try to work on something for the contest in my spare time.

Anyways, I do have one question regarding the contest subform. I noticed that in the main page for the contest's subforum, the option for making new threads is given. And since you stated that the development of BLDC was mostly based on the format of VLDC, will this mean we'll be able to make threads related to our individual levels, like in the Vanilla Level Design Contest(s)? Or is this simply an unintended feature/ mistake?

Yep, you can make threads in here just like VLDC.
The general/design rules say that it's not allowed to edit Map16 pages 80 to 8F, but pages 8C to 8F are blank. Does this mean that I'm supposed to leave pages 8C to 8F blank? Are the any custom BG tiles in these 4 pages?

I think there were some there at one point but we might have optimized the pages so they were no longer needed and I never updated the rules to reflect it. It's probably safest to just leave them alone just in case.
brldc = brazillians level design contest :thinkio:

im a little skeptical about the idea of giving everybody the same set of resources because thats how you get the same level 50 times except some are better versions than others. either way though i am glad with the wide variety of options and iwll try to use every single one in my level
ask me if i give a f*ck...

Am I doing something wrong here, or is this baserom completely borked? (I've been seeing all the wacky stuff a certain group has been exploiting, and here I am trying to use a firebar)

E: also I noticed some of the object descriptions lie, like the donut graphics being in 10B and not 107.

!!!!dumb question alert!!!!
I noticed an abundance of resources in addition to the .bps in the base ROM .zip file. Are we gonna have to insert this stuff manually with non-LM applications, or will it all be present automatically in the patched ROM and ready for use in Lunar Magic? Just wondering what kind of time/effort commitment this is gonna be before I'm even able to start actually designing a level, lol.
Also, was there an announcement about BLDC on the site before it began? I saw the flashy red alert below the site banner but could not for the life of me find any information about what "BLDC" stood for, let alone what it actually was. Was this intentional?

It's possible that in our rush to finish documentation that we made some mistakes, or the location of something changed from one file to another and we didn't catch it in the docs before launching the contest. I'll definitely investigate it.

The external resources with the base rom are all inserted already. The only exception would be the sample levels, which are there simply so you can more easily import pre-assembled backgrounds. There are no pre-assembled foregrounds, but you can use the foreground sample levels to at least extract palettes from them.

As for the contest being a surprise, yeah I kind of wanted it to be a surprise so I didn't talk much about it until this past week in which I dropped the name of it in the Event Calendar thread. Since it was a totally new contest, I thought it'd be fun to tease people about what it could be, all leading up to the reveal this afternoon.
no
hai, imma join. first question, can this BLDC base rom be turned into a full hack after the contest?
a compilation? this should answer your question.
