After most of you played so much hacks, vanilla or not, i wonder if few, some, many, most, or none of you are still interessted in true, 100% vanilla hacks, with no custom music, graphics, palattes or map 16 changing.

Well, vanilla hacks can definitely be fun, both to make and to play. It just takes way more effort to use vanilla resources in a way that makes levels and overworlds interesting.

I'm not at all. I need some ear and eye candy to be interested. I've felt SMW's original feeling in way too many different games by now and it was enough to make me sick of it.
It's easily the best thing I've done
So why the empty numb?
I'm pretty sure we have so few hacks like these nowadays. This and little likelihood of canceling it (I haven't made a lengthy hack yet and it'd be a shame if it were canceled; also I'd like to gradually get to more elaborate things like inserting ASM) are the reasons why I'm working on one. I'll prove that if a hack feels like SMW, it doesn't mean it can't be fun at all!

Basically, I believe in peace and bashing two bricks together.

I don't see any point in limiting yourself arbitrarily like that. I think more people should consider what would make the hack interesting rather than what category they want to place it in.

When they're good and long, yes. They kind of have a charm to me and it's always nice to see what people can do with just vanilla stuff.
Purely 100% vanilla hack may make people feeling nostalgia again and again, but that's it (I am looking at you, these Atari flashback consoles).
Vanilla hacks are really outdated. There is nothing new and interesting when playing vanilla hacks. It's very limited and seeing all the same stuff from the original is getting boring quick. It's the best to work with custom stuff, even if it still uses tilesets and sprites from the game.
Im not a fan of SMW's default graphics but as long as the game is fun then it doesn't really matter. But if you care about creativity in level design and going for the wow appeal seen in hacks like Brutal Mario or JUMPhalf, you are going to be hard-pressed to make your levels interesting with only using the bare minimal Lunar Magic offers, especially that not many hackers aim to be like Nintendo in their hack level designs, nor do they successfully attempt to emulate such when they claim that their hack is styled off like a Nintendo Mario game (by making generally safe levels)...

What im basically saying is, personally it doesn't matter if its "vanilla" to me as long as its fun, but I don't really see such a hack faring all too well to generate hype because when it comes to Nintendo's games and the more memorable ROM-Hacks do in fact, take risks with the ideas they have and test it out for players to enjoy, which "vanilla" hacks generally do not do.
Modern Redrawn Mario Bros. 1.5 (last update - February 14, 2023, some new bonus frames, tons of minor touchups to various poses)

On Pixel Art Requests: Depends on what it is and if I have the time for it. If its complex and I don't have the time, don't expect me to accept it.

Projects I support:

I prefer hacks with a lot of custom stuff (graphics, music, ASM), but I'd still play a pure vanilla hack if it were well-designed. In fact, I'd be more likely to play that than the more common "technically vanilla" hacks that use the original game's resources in a way they weren't intended (tile 1F0, simulating tilesets that weren't in the original game, etc.). I've tried to make a couple pure vanilla hacks, but I don't think my level design is good enough to compensate for not having any custom resources.

I'm working on a hack! Check it out here. Progress: 64/95 levels.
If I recall correctly, a lot of JUMP and JUMP½ is surprisingly vanilla, so there's that.

That aside, pure vanilla has gotten pretty boring, and people (including me) have come to expect more thorough edits and flashier gimmicks. That probably reflects the "paradigm shift" (or something) of SMW hacking, going from "base for custom levels" to "game engine of sorts".

As WYE said there are some good examples of completely vanilla levels being interesting and fun, but honestly even then I wouldn't want it to be 100% vanilla; I am sick and tired of the same old SMW tune so at the very least I'd like to hear some other stuff while playing an otherwise 100% vanilla level.

I don't mind playing 100% vanilla hacks as long as they are fun, but I've gotten kinda sick of them with time. I saw them too many times for me to grow tired of SMW's aesthetics.

Are you alive or just breathing?
The music thing is a good example of what I meant. Like, if you don't have an actual reason to use default music other than "it's vanilla", why wouldn't you use something else? Just do what fits best for your level or hack.

I always find vanilla hacks very enjoyable to see, because it's more a close ancestor to SMW, the game we're all here to respect and what have you.
SMW modding is neat, I can't make music if my life depended on it though

It really isn't. SMW was constantly introducing new gimmicks and had numerous level elements and enemies that appeared only once in the entire game.

Personally, I enjoy 100% vanilla hacks of SMW, since these hacks tend to be close to the source material.
While technically impressive, I don't like hacks that are crowded with custom resources.
Hacks like these can be fun too, but if I want to play a SMW hack, I want it to feel like SMW outside of the used physics engine.
I'll be down for a 100% vanilla hack every now and then, but for the most part I'm more of a choconilla (with a bias on vanilla) guy. You introduce things SMW didn't have (such as wind generators, various enemies from other Mario games, etc) and insert bangin' music, you know I'll have a good time.

STELLA!
Yep. Tbh I can not get ASAR to work so it is my only choice.

Agree with you. While pure vanilla hacks can be a little bit bland, I also can't fully like purely chocolate hacks that don't even feel like SMW. I like to play hacks that respect the SMW physics and graphics (maybe incorporating some, but also using custom palettes of vanilla ones and remixing vanilla gfx) + custom music.
