A Plumber For All Seasons - World 2 Gameplay Footage

Super Mario WorldVideo/Trailer

A Plumber For All Seasons is a hack I've been working on for (aaaaaaaaa) about seven years now. For those who haven't heard of it, the main premises are:
  • there's four main worlds, each in the same location but in a different season
  • I'm trying to make as many resources as possible myself — certainly all the graphics, a lot of ASM, and perhaps some music here and there. (psst! if you're interested in composing/porting music for this hack, get in touch with me!)

There's not going to be any demos, but whenever I finish a world I'll compile a bit of gameplay. A couple of C3s ago I posted a video of world 1 (the Spring world), and now — only two and a half years later — it's with great joy that I announce world 2, the Summer world, is finished as well! So here's another trailer-like thing.

(There's slowdown in a few places, some of which I've tried to hide by sloppily speeding up the footage. Don't worry, I'll use SA-1 for the final version!)

Two and a half years sounds pretty long for making one world's worth of levels, and I guess it is — but considering world 1 took me five years in total, with lots of unnecessary breaks, and considering I put in even more special-effects effort into world 2, I'd say this is actually good progress! I'll do my best to pick up the pace even further, too, so that the final release may be in the far-but-not-too-far future.

If you like what you've been working on so far, visit my hack thread after C3 is over for more or less regular updates on world 3 and beyond!

I expect the full game to be great, judging by this trailer.
Gosh, this looks kinda amazing. I've always thought the hack looked good, but with all the new content we're seeing now, I'm legitimately starting to love it. The art style really seems quite unique within the SMW hacking scene, and the level design seems varied and fun.

I also like the different Marios on the title screen. Here's hope that Mario will actually be switching his outfits throughout the game, that would be cool.
Feel free to visit my website/blog - it's updated rarely, but it looks pretty cool!
This looks very nice indeed. I'd been following progress on the hack in your regular thread, but the trailer is also cool. I hope further progress goes well.

Also, I might be willing to compose music for it, depending on what you're looking for.

I'm working on a hack! Check it out here. Progress: 64/95 levels.
it's really cool to see the everything from the screenshots in your wip thread come to life. i love how you have used the boo rings and turned them into baby urchins (or at least I assume that's what you did). and i feel like I recognise that treetop tileset from somewhere (SMWCP2??)

i couldn't stick at the same project for like seven years as you have though, i'd be bored after that long and want to do something else so props to that #tb{:p}

world 3 gameplay C3 2022?

Beautifully done!

The only real thing that bugs me about this is now that there's all-new graphics, Mario himself looks out-of-place compared to the new GFX. Like I think having Mario re-draw in the style of the rest of the game would help keep things consistent, although I imagine it'd be pretty time-consuming to do so. plus it means you can finally have shirtless mario and the other seasonal skins

The rest looks really good though! The trailer does a great job of showing off both the new graphics, level mechanics and themes and I'm now really looking forward to this being finished.

On a side note, in the trailer I noticed a bunch of lag every now and again, is that in-game or just due to the recording software?

Glad you like it! #tb{:)} I'll keep on working hard.

Thanks so much for the offer! I didn't have you on my radar as a musician to be perfectly honest, but apparently you've been quite busy porting songs which is cool. Your latest original compositions seem to be from 2011-ish, so do you happen to have any more recent work that could help me gauge if the style fits what I already have?

The platforms are, yeah! #ab{^^;;;} The tree trunks are new though.

It's become a bit of a running gag at this point that I don't plan to change the player graphics. I'd like to add the seasonal skins as an easter egg of sorts, though, so there's that!

That's in-game slowdown, unfortunately. I'm gonna have to switch to SA-1, but I'd rather not do it until the rest of the hack is done.

All of this looks awesome. Honestly great job.
Looks like the slowdown will be resolved so I'm eager to play this when it comes out!
I'll be looking forward to it
i dont know what to think about the implications the beach level has with the urchin bodies shoved into the ceiling as a form of hurt block. this hack is real pretty, though. the cave level with the lava geysers looks pretty insane.

if i can criticize one thing, i think perhaps the koopas could use a redesign. were i to guess, it looks like they were one of the first things drawn, and compared to the sprites of the nep-enut, the scuttlebugs and so on they look... less great? their faces especially look rather squished.
It's stunning how much care and attention you've put into this project. It's easily one of the nicest looking Mario hacks of all time. Once you stamp out those slowdowns, it'd probably end up being the nicest playing as well!
That said, out of all of the wonderful designs that you've made for this, how did you end up with just a regular-ass seagull for an enemy? Yeah they're vicious and all, but everything else is so fantastical.

Other Submissions of mine!
The seagulls look a little out of place with all the other classic Mario enemies but beyond that this looks fantastic! Can't wait to see the finished product!

Also I'll port music for you

Unfortunately, most of the compositions I've done more recently are FamiTracker/NES ones, so they sound more like Mega Man than Mario. But I guess I could show you the boss and overworld themes I've made for Peach's Quest: A Princess Story. I've been wanting to do more SMW compositions for a while anyway.

They were indeed the first sprites I drew, yeah, and I agree they're a little skinny. I'll give them another try sometime.

Interesting how a lot of people single out the seagulls! #ab{^^;;;} I think a bird's trajectory (or something) makes for a pretty nice game mechanic with no need for less realistic behavior. They don't feel that out of place to me in a world of slugs, seahorses and corals - they only thing they're lacking maybe is the cartoony eyes?

i saw the trailer some days ago but didn't comment lmao

i love the general aesthetic of your hack and i kinda wish you manage to finish everything (and also fix the slowdown problem pls!)

amazing job #smw{:TUP:}

if you need help with sa-1 conversions, feel free to pm/dm me if i'm still active on the smw hacking scene
This is looking absolutely incredible!
I've been following progress in this hack for quite a while, and it's great to finally see all those things you showed in action!
I could really go commenting on each of the great things i see there, but then this post would become pretty long lol. So i'll just say that everything looks really cool!

The artstyle in this hack is absolutely gorgeous! It's a really unique style and it works so well!

I look forward to see more progress on this!

I guess it's the cartoon eyes, yeah. They're realistically proportioned birds (I guess except for the size), while all of the other enemies are fairly exaggerated in some way. Goonies might be a good bird enemy to take some inspiration from if you're ever willing to look into redoing the design somewhere down the road.

Another thing - have you ever made a demo or teaser for this hack?

Gosh, all your graphical work is super lovely. I've been following progress for a while but never really said anything--my bad. Really looking forward to what more you have in store!
Looks like an amazing hack!

The only issue I have with it is that it's cliché. It looks no different from so many other hacks I've played. The pallet is nothing new, nor is the enemies. I don't even now if the water levels you showcased are the same or not because they all look the same. Lunar Magic gives us so many things to do, but nowdays people are just downloading ExGFX and using the given pallet for it. For grass levels, green grass and brown dirt! And never forget the ExGFX that's used in so many other hacks! Same goes for any other theme.

Moral of the story: It's much better to make a hack different as opposed to doing what everyone else is doing.

Now those Mario graphics are amazing! Keep that up!
"Blasted!"
I still stand by the fact that the rainy level is one of if not the best looking levels in terms of aesthetics I have ever seen in my 10 years of hacking.
I remember been really impressed with Pokey's Adventure back in the day so seeing how far you keep pushing yourself to create these fantastic looking levels is amazing.

I wish you the best of luck getting this completed.
