Super Mario Maker 2 General Discussion

So, Mario Maker 2 is out in a few hours - what are you guys all planning to do for your first level? I'm really hyped to experiment with vertical levels and the new night mode myself, lowkey I want to make a vertical night level in the castle theme (rising lava). The combo of swimming and lava seems pretty interesting to design a vertical course around. With that said there are so many mechanics to play around with I have no idea what I'll end up making.

I'm gonna remake the first level I made in SMM for 3DS, Wary Warehouse. I'll extend it and add a ton of new stuff.

I am likely going to make a Toxic Tower like level of sorts. Even though I bet many others will. But I'll do my own twist on it. It will be part of my Scryer Dimensions series, name pending.

From what I've seen, the blocks that create paths and custom screen scrolling settings are my favorites. Once I get the game, I'll be toying around with those to see what kind of level I can make with those things.

Lol, answered the first question a moment ago in another thread.

I'm getting the game at GameStop after work tomorrow so I can start playing it.

The big blocks you can ground pound in 3D World to make blocks can be used to instantly crush you when they wrap around. At best, you can leap off in one direction and fall into a pit if planned evilly.

I have figured out many many evil ways to kill the player now. I'd say Mario but you can play as Luigi and co for once so that's neat!

I'm excited to experiment with the 3D World style, the move list as well as the new blocks and enemies are so good.

I'll be going to get my copy in the morning.

It's gonna be a tough day to survive at college today, that's for sure. Oh well, a ~7 hour wait must be manageable I suppose.
My girlfriend got her copy already (whereas mine wasn't even shipped; I really don't get Amazon sometimes).

I really enjoy the game so far, but the online multiplayer is borderline unplayable in its current state. Once any player has a bad internet connection, the game immediately slows down to a fraction of the speed. When it works well, it's a lot of fun, but so far, it often times doesn't.

Also I'm a bit angry, because Amazon didn't include the stylus, which was supposed to be a preorder bonus over here, in the order. Hope they will hand out coupon codes or something like that, but so far, no word on the stylus.

EDIT:
Finally had a few multiplayer rounds that were actually good and fun. So, so much fun! First of all, I learned that a player can steal another player's key. Wanna know how I found out? By having another player steal both my key and my victory, lol. I was kinda pissed. Also turns out that you can pick up and throw players in VS multiplayer, but I don't know how to do it. I've already tried all logical buttons, but somehow only the other players were able to do it to me, I couldn't pull it off.

Secondly, I have the best VS game ever.

Part 2
Twitter unfortunately messes up the quality, and of course it isn't the entire level, but basically, we had a level that required killing a Goomba for the goal to appear, and doing so required steering the Goomba through an obstacle course for a Thwomp to crush it. At first, Mario and me just ran off to the goal, trying to get there first, hoping that Toadette would take care of the Goomba. She wasn't able to do it, though, so we actually ran back. However, we just hindered one another, so eventually Toadette just gave and started bumping to the beat, and I eventually joined her and just let Mario do his thing.

After a day of playing the game, I can say I really love this game. Upside down caves mess with my head when it comes to up and down on the analog stick/d-pad, I can say that as well. I'm sure I'll get used to it in 1 or 2 weeks time.

I have Peach's Castle completely rebuilt in Story Mode, still gotta finish up the remaining levels though.

Had some of my most unplayable VS matches today. It's one thing to have constant slowdown throughout a match, it's another thing entirely to have sporadic, unpredictable slowdown, because that legitimately DOES make a level unplayable. Also had a match where we had the game freeze for a few seconds every couple of seconds, until one of the players dropped out, after which the level ran at normal speed. Nintendo really needs to do something about this. Either match players together based on their connection quality, or outright prohibit players with a bad internet connection from accessing the game (because it's not really usable for them, anyways, and they just ruin the game for everyone else). Like, I have legitimately never played a game that was so unplayable online. Then again, maybe the problem will fix itself once ranking up, because I can't imagine the game working well enough for players with a bad connection, so it's unlikely for them to rank up, thus leading to mostly players with a good connection in the higher ranks. It's just a theory, but I sure do hope the situation will improve in one way or another. I'm really enjoying this multiplayer, but I legitimately can't play it the way it currently is.

I love this game a lot but some of the decisions made are really strange.
Night mode is the biggest disappointment: weak music, basic starry sky backgrounds that often look worse than the originals, and gameplay effects that I don't think a single person on the planet asked for. I don't know why nighttime couldn't have simply been a visual thing only. Gusts of wind, poison water, and low gravity should have just been settings applied to levels, like autoscrolling or verticality. Having water/lava/poison should have absolutely been an option for every single stage.
Some of the mechanical changes are weird too, with lots of high-level, non-glitch tricks from the original game just not being possible anymore. I'm super glad that bombs don't bounce all over the damn place though: the bouncing made them an absolute nightmare to work with in the original.
The 3D World style looks and plays great but it's a colossal disappointment that so many things about it are exclusive to it and that so many basic things from the other styles are kept out of it. It's definitely a worthy addition, but not letting the player mix and match things from different games goes against a huge part of the game's appeal.
There's the disappointing lack of unique music for most of the new Mario 3 styles, as well. I get that the game already featured these themes, but why did snow get a music track when desert and forest didn't?

These downsides, even at their worst, aren't enough to make me stop loving this game. I've pretty much played it for three days straight and I've had fun at just about every moment. There's a ridiculous amount of cool levels out there. Story mode was surprisingly fun this time around and the new Endless Challenge mode is neat. I'm currently on stage 88 of Expert.
I have two levels made so far and I have plenty of inspiration for more. The new mechanics and tools are really good and allow for tons of levels that are way deeper than what the original game had. Some of these additions are so good and so obvious that it's hard to believe the first game lacked them. A really good sequel that, despite a few missteps and tragic missed opportunities, is absolutely worth every penny.

And I thought I was doing well with hitting level 100 on Normal difficulty.

Did you skip a lot of bullshit? Because I almost never do and my record on Expert is no more than a paltry 6. The same as my record on Super Expert, which sounds a little better.
I think my record is only 3 or 4 for Super Expert. I usually don't start skipping levels until I get low on lives. Normally, what happens is that I get a level that seems like it's beatable, and when I lose a few lives in it, instead of skipping it, I want to beat it even more than before, just to not let the level "win", especially if it's a bad level and not very fun. I also have this really shitty personality trait where if I dislike a level so much that I already know I am going to Boo it, I want to beat it really, really badly, just so that in my head I can say "hey look, I actually completed your level and I still hated it, that means it's actually bad and not just me being defeated by it".

This is a part of my personality that I really hate, because I'm not like that at all in real life. I'm actually one of the most relaxed people on earth and rarely even get stressed. Only when I play games, I get so angry and pissed about everything and everyone that you wouldn't even recognize me. That's also why I can't ever enjoy any online multiplayer games for a long time. Even if I enjoy them (like I do the VS in this game), and even if I try to play them "just for fun", I can't stop myself from perceiving losses as a personal failure and getting really pissed about them, and since there isn't any game at which I'm good enough to keep up with the higher-ranked players, there's always a point in each competitive online game at which I start to lose more games than I win, and just imagining that makes me so uncomfortable that I usually don't even play online games long enough to get to that point. As I said, I really hate this part of myself. There just aren't any competitive online games that I can enjoy long-term because of this. It's like, I know it's bad, and I even usually know it's bad while it's happening, but there seems to be such an uncontrollable outburst of chemicals in my body that I can't prevent it from happening (except for maybe by taping my mouth, but that would only combat the symptoms, not the cause).

On a related note, I can really laugh about this occurence now and think it was one of the funniest things to have happened to me in the game so far, but when it actually happened yesterday, I couldn't laugh at all. I just screamed so horribly loud that my neighbors probably thought I needed an exorcist. Wish I could be like those people that can play games for hours and never get angry. I really look up to them.

Honestly, unless a level presents itself as pure trial and error (pick-a-pipe), I don't skip. I'm just lucky with consistently getting good levels and plenty of lives.

I wish I were as lucky/patient as you are! Oh well. Being in the top 100 of Europe in Super Expert is no bad performance too, so I can deal with it I suppose.

(I saw you quie high on the Expert rankings btw)
How do the rankings work, anyways, and where do you find them? Are you ranked only based on your current run, or are you ranked based on your life-time record?

It's pretty unintuitive. Go tot he leaderboards section and do an advanced player search.
Not sure where to post here, but in fact that someone just recreated Downwell in Super Mario Maker 2. Take a look!

You know, it's pretty obnoxious that there's no proper way to edit a level after it's uploaded.
