So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish

After 14+ years, I have decided to finally resign as the owner and maintainer for SMW Central, passing it on to someone else - a tough decision to make for something you created and took care of for so many years.

When Smallhacker and I first started working on it back in 2005, I couldn't possibly have imagined what it would grow into. We wanted to create the home for SMW hacking on the internet, and I believe SMW Central has succeeded in that mission. It has certainly been an experience to run it for so long, both good and bad, and I think it is one that has also helped me grow as a person. Likewise, seeing people talk about the how SMW Central has influenced their lives growing up always makes me smile.

There have been trying times, of course, and "getting rid" of the site some way (either shutting it down, selling it or giving it away) has been on my mind more than once. But in the end, I've always told myself that I would keep the site running for as long as there are people around who enjoy it.

So, what changed my mind? To be honest, I feel like it's been a long time coming. It's no secret that I've been rather inactive on the site for some years, having only afforded it a minimum amount of attention whenever there was a fire to put out. This seems to have only become worse, and it made increasingly less sense for me to spend energy and resources on it.

I am at a point now were it feels like I'm starting a new chapter of my life. I finally got an engineering degree, I got a full-time job and a new place to live. I also have a few project ideas that I would like to take a stab at. So, it feels like the right time to let go of some of the old to make room for something new.

So, who will be the new owner? I brought the subject up with the admin team, and Noivern stepped forward. He will take over the domains and hosting, paying for the site's upkeep. Telinc1 has already been developing for the site for a while and will step up to become fully responsible for coding and operation of the server. idol will remain site manager/head admin.

The plan is to transfer the site on Tuesday, June 18, 2019. This means that all user information, forum posts, files, etc. will be moved to a server owned and paid for by Noivern on that date. The site will be down during the move, which is expected to take a few hours, but it could be longer (a day or two at worst) if we run into unexpected issues. Still, we'll try to make the transition as smooth as possible.

I would like to thank everyone who's been involved with SMW Central, whether it be former or current staff, or just the userbase in general, for all your contributions over the years, making the site what it is today. I hope that it will continue to be the home of SMW hacking and will keep thriving. Perhaps even moreso with a new, more active management.

I'm probably not disappearing fully, at least not overnight (though I can scarcely be less active than I am already), and if any of those projects pan out, who knows. Perhaps you'll see me rear my ugly head again someday. Until then, you can reach me through email, Steam or Discord (I'm on the SMW Central server) if you have any questions, comments, want to play a game of Minecraft (or something else), or simply have a chat.

See you all around!

I wonder what a HFD opcode would do in ASM...
Well, like you said, Kieran, we could all see this coming because of how inactive you were. Luckily, you decided to resign as the owner and then give it to some active fellow SMWC'ers. I think that's a good decision on your end it should make our community thrive more.

We will never forget you and your efforts to make this website. You will go down in SMWC history for sure. #smrpg{<3}
Just so you know, I'm very active on the site anymore like I was before; I'm mainly on Discord now.
wow, this change is gonna be real hard to get used to. i hope the new guys do a great job at keeping the site alive though.
14 years? Damn, that's some dedication if i've even seen some!

As Kieran and people have said and probably will say a lot, We saw this coming, seeing as how inactive you were. Congrats on the degree and the full time job and good luck with starting this new chapter of your life! I hope whatever you decide to chase after in the future is successful and will benefit you.

You'll be missed, Kieran. Good luck in life.
This is really unexpected, but after all it's for a good cause, I only hope everything go well with your future projects. Nice run, you will be missed.

Well this is an end of era alright, although I guess the writing was on the wall when it came to owning the site, especially with other big name members moving on and new admins appearing.

Hopefully the site transfer goes through well and the site can still last; 14 years is pretty impressive for a site like this.

Thank You for doing this for 14+ years. Good luck with the new era Kieran.
Very unexpected hope it works out.
i'm relatively new to this site, having only been around for a year a year or so, but this has been a great place and the community you've built has been amazing. best of luck later on in life, and farewell!
That's really sad to hear this site going down. Hopefully the new site is going to be better. It has to really unfortunate, especially when Super Mario Maker 2 is about to come. Hopefully your Life will be great and the right decision, still respect the community.

It was a great time and now its complete. Now its time to save this!
I've only been around for a third of those almost 15 years, but I'm still sad to see you resign. I've only really seen you like you described: barely active. For a while I thought: "shouldn't this guy talk more? He's the owner of this place after all" then I got used to it. I really respect that you're acknowledging your inactivity, and I wish there weren't such a thing to acknowledge for.
I know the people you're passing your responsibilities to, and I trust them. Noivern has been holding the position of administrator for a while now, and Telinc1 has done an excellent job working on the site so far (the built-in SPC player in the music section is a godsend!).

Thank you and Smallhacker for creating this site. I was 15 when I joined, now I'm preparing for my third year of college. I've met people I'd never have met otherwise. I'm so grateful I found this place and decided to stop by, I can't imagine my life without it.
Thank you!
It's kinda sad to see you go, Kieran, but you've dedicated so much of your time keeping this website up and running (14 years? That's crazy!). Anyway, congrats on your degree and full-time job. I get it, everyone has real-life tasks to tackle, but I certainly wish you the best regarding your future.

I hope Noivern and Telinc1 will make the site as good as it always was, but hopefully even better!

That came unexpected, yet it also is reasonable.

I wish you best of luck with your real life duties and thank you a lot for hosting and developing this site. Leaving might've been a tough decision, but if this is, what your heart desires you certainly won't regret it. Noivern, Telic and Idol surely are a great team to keep the site up!

Again, best of luck with everything you do!! #smrpg{<3}

Well, that was unexpected.
I've been active only recently, but I knew about this site since I was a wee lad, so it's still sad to see a site leader like you stepping down. Best of luck for you.
Unexpected news for sure, but something I could have seen coming quite a while ago.

Thank you for everything you've done for the past fourteen years, Kieran! And congratulations to Noivern and Telinc1 for being given the keys to the site.
Holy shit. I didn't expect this of all things to happen.

Thank you for all the good times and I wish you the best of luck with your life. Thank you.
Windowless ride, feeling alive
Are you alive or just breathing?
this was sudden. its been a good ride. thank you keiran, and have goodbyr. #smw{:peace:}
thanks for all you've done, good luck in your future endeavors
ask me if i give a f*ck...
Man, you were one of the people I looked up to as a kid. You were that mythical owner of this magical place called SMWCentral. It's weird seeing that person I saw more or less as an inspiration move on after so long.

I'm glad I was the final donator under your ownership. The final one of an era.

So long, Kieran. Good luck with your further endeavors.
