New Super Mario World 2 - Post-Rejection Testing (Update)

World 12 finished.
Levels are nice as the rest of the hack. However, as lordkronos100 said, 12-5 and 12-6 make the hack freeze in some areas.


Here the game froze, don't know if it's because of the Fire Bro.
In the same level it froze again because of an Ice Bro.


This is the pipe to progress through the level but game freezes after entering it, making the castle unbeatable.
Rest of the pipes from this world work fine.
Hope you can fix those major issues, because those levels were good

EDIT 1: lordkronos 100 Try changing to snes9x v1.60, because I've started World 13, and for now no important issues.

EDIT 2: World 13 finished, 14 awaits.
This ice world has incredible ideas, my favourite levels from this world are 13-5 and 13-6 (last one was tricky but fair and great). That 13-3 with its cold lake where you can't use flowers is nice too (careful, in 13-3 you can break the level if you swim under the ice foreground from the underwater section). Rest of the levels were great!
I only found two small issues:


From 13-1 to 13-4 when hitting coin blocks there is a small graphical error.

World 14 finished. This abstract world wasn't bad, but it seems a bit incomplete for me. Also, difficulty spike has increased a lot from world 13. Levels were not bad, but a bit confusing, the best level from this world is Castle of Dreams (14-6). Some issues were found.

In House of Illusion 2, which was a decent level (a bit stressing and confusing too though) this screenshot shows an unfair situation where Mario can be hurt due to reduced space.

Well, world 14 finished, not bad, but can have some improvement tbh.
Still a good hack, don't be discouraged by this!
Now world 15 awaits,
I think this is last world, because world 16 is not done yet.


EDIT: World 15 finished, this was better than previous one, with great levels, some of them fast-paced, keeping you alert. A couple of issues:


Even spin jumping without taking damage can be tricky in that part of 15-2


Last Dragon coin from The final level... or not (15-5) has the bug of the sub-screen boundaries.
World 15 was great!

This test has finished. You just have to fix what lordkronos100 and I said. If you fix those bugs, it can be one of the best hacks.

You don't need to replay through everything again, just rename the save file of the previous demo.

Updates:
-Moved the goal point of 2-3, 7-5, 8-5, 9-3, 14-1, 14-2 and 14-3 to different sublevels that don't have translucent Layer 3 backgrounds to avoid glitches.
-Fixed the graphics of the Sledge Bros in 2-6
-Fixed the cave sublevel in 3-4
-Fixed the invisible ground in 4-4
-Fixed the dragon coin automatically being collected by a shell in 4-5
-Fixed 5-2 not appearing in the overworld after beating 5-1 (if the level wasn't unlocked by the secret exit in 3-3)
-Redesigned the second part of 5-6
-Fixed the door in 9-5
-Added some extra aesthetic elements in the sky levels
-Changed 12-5 from a vertical level to a tall horizontal level which fixes the fire bro crashing the game.
-Moved the second part to a sublevel
-Fixed the pipe crashing the game in 12-6
-Changed the placement of the dragon coins in some levels of World 14
-Made the boss in 14-6 less easy.

I still haven't fixed everything (like the glitchy sprites when you hit a coin block in the ice levels) but i will fix those later. When i finish World 16 i will upload another demo to test the whole thing before releasing it.

Now for who finished testing i have a question for you: Which is you favorite level of each world?


So, I'm not sure how often this will happen, but when I beat World 2's Boss, One of his Beach Balls pushed me into the wall.

Afterall its a Difficult Question I Like all Levels But i Have Picked some Who The Estetic is Realy Nice for me i Would Stil Insert More by so Much Great Levels but Here it Comes :D

I know it's not complete, but I think it needs more patching up than boss fights. Some of the more puzzle-like levels should be made easier (or at least give more hints on how to complete them), it could use a new title screen, some of the music doesn't fit the levels well.. I hated world 12 (levels all looked the same, a boring grey mess of bricks and it was confusing to find the exits. The level "Pipe Maze House" almost made me bald). I liked what world 14 was doing but I found the execution of it underwhelming.

Not bad though, definitely worth playing through and a worthy sequel to the first one. There's a lot of cool concepts and ASM edits that make up for its mistakes. But still there's a lot that could be improved on.
How do you rename the save file, it says that I can't have the same file with the same name twice, meaning that I can't replace the save file of the new demo with the old demo

Glad you've fixed bugs from world 1 and 2. Just one thing about entrances...


In Hotel (2-5), if you go through a secret door you come to this room full of coins. However, when entering again the door, it takes Mario to a forest level, which is Seasonal Shrubland (5-5).
Apart from that, no bugs, well done!

World 3 has no bugs, great job on fixing them!
Just one minor niptick:


In Breaking Bridges (3-5), I think you may need a Silver P-Switch to get that 1-UP, but I haven't found it. Also, there are only 4 Dragon Coins.
Will edit this again later. This hack has improved a lot. It was great before but now it's even better.

World 4 has no bugs! Good job. I will keep testing later.

No bugs found in Worlds 5 and 6! Great!
EDIT 4:
World 7 has no bugs! Only a few of minor nipticks.


In Pokey Paradise (7-1), when using a blue shell with Yoshi, you can skip the level.


In Mesa Mountains (7-2), I don't know if you are intended to use Homing Bills to
get the 3-UP Moon up there
but you can just jump normally.
Also, in Desert Ruins Race (7-3) there are only 4 Dragon Coins.

I played your hack and have a brief review of my experience with your recent build once you own said something that will hurt somebody that dedicated enough to helping you, as what i am doing here as well. Honestly, it makes me sad as I've been doing this for over 3 years for the brazilian community.
But it's fine, let'go:

WONDERFUL AESTHETICS:
The strong part of your hack, without doubt. Vibrant colors paired with vanilla graphics make everything look so good. The use of contrasts e crazy effects create a cool immersion, for sure.

SO MUCH CRASH:
When half of your hack is about Crash Bandicoot music and VLDCX entries, the ambient looks off. Even in some levels your choice was so random (like a desert theme for a beach) that don't fit so well. The fact here is that you can love Crash Music, but this don't makes sure it will match the stage. All you need to do is choose something that feels good for the level and not (technically) just because you liked it.

MUCH POTENTIAL, LITTLE EXECUTION:
One of the first things I noticed is the tutorial phase and yes, tutorials are important. Honestly, I feel a little sad when you show a big hack, with beautiful mechanics, but not much use of them. One example is (correct me if I'm wrong) the fact that Dragon Coins are useless while in other hacks, collecting such coins gives you a prize post-game.
My tip here is be more creative with resources that you have and how you will show for the player.

SO MUCH SKIP:
Yeah, you know well. Why you would put a lot of world skip when the player have the chance of don't play the same world again? I mean, while i playtested your hack i skipped the worlds 2,8,10,11 and 12. I really asked myself if this would kill the plotline but the hack feels like a bunch of levels without context, just for the sake of exits.

HARD, ONE TRY PUZZLES:
That's a short and interesting point: some of your puzzles don't have a reset door and if have one don't help the player after all. The puzzle on 9-3 ins't fun after all wrong doors, 13-2 have a one-try segment where you need grab a Fireflower but, she is underwater and, you know, Firemario lose her powerup on water. Be more careful with that, ok?

A BAD AND RUSHED SENSATION:
Yep, that's right: the definition of your game is rushed. And do you know one of the most inmportant lessons that i've learnd in my smwhacking journey? Yeah, respect and love is one of them but i'm talking about:

"never publish a rushed game".

And you know why? Because you can see the agony, the lack of ideas and oportunity of the dev in your own game. When the player finish a level and says "Thanks, gosh, 'ill never play this level/hack again"... isn't good, right? If this make you confortable, i liked this hack rather the first edition. You have evolved a lot, sure! Just take your time. You can finish your hack in 2030, but please don't rush.

A few weeks ago, this hack has been rejected from the hacks section and since then, i decided to replay the whole thing to test it and fix the issues, some of which are minor and weren't pointed out by the testers or even the people who played the hack after C3. I spent some time fixing issues such as making some overly frustrating levels such as 14-5, 16-5 and 16-6 more fair as well as making some sprites like the ice bros in 13-5 less annoying, and i also removed the windy cloud enemy from 11-2, now it is only used in a few parts of 10-3. I also fixed the game over 99 lives glitch and other minor things.

However, i'm the creator and i'm not the one who's gonna play the hack and because of that, i need some people to help me to get extra feedback so i can fix other glitches i haven't found and have a better idea of how hard a level is and overall having more opinions, so here's what i want:

-I would like to see what you think about each level, if you like it, if you find it too easy or too hard for the world it is in or if you just think it is a badly designed mess
-Feel free to point out any issue you want, feel free to criticize
-Try being detailed with your comments
-Try looking for areas or puzzles that need reset doors to avoid softlocking or forced deaths.

Just want to put in my 2 cents as a newbie. I signed up on this site for the sole purpose of making this post.

Maybe my opinion isn't worth much, but I find the draconian criticism of your hack to be, quite frankly, a little absurd. Considering the quality of MOST hacks available for download on this site (which are still up, by the way) the fact that yours was rejected blows my mind. AGAIN, I'm new, so there's probably some nuance to smw game design I don't understand. However, from someone who played 9 of the 16 worlds with immense pleasure, you have an incredible amount of talent. The level design, in my opinion, is refreshing and fun. I'm a professional illustrator by trade, and your aesthetic sensibilities really resonate with me. Color, sprites, art, all some of the best I've seen in 16 bit. Gorgeous, immersive and whimsical worlds. I was floored when I found out you were so young. I certainly hope you aren't discouraged!

We could always improve on our products, and you should! But also, if no one has said so already: great freaking job so far. This is quite literally THE SMW sequel I always wanted from the time I was a child. Thank you so much for your hard work, and I look forward to when the game is finessed enough for whoever's in charge.
