Overworld Design Contest 2019 - Discussion and Questions

Link Thread Closed

OWDC

This thread is for any questions you may have about the Overworld Design Contest. Keep screenshots and other showoff-like subject matter to the #overworld2019-showoff channel in our Discord server, that way us judges can avoid seeing anything of yours too early.

Remember: this isn't the thread for submitting your entries. That would be the Rules and Submission Thread. Good luck everybody!

Discuss.
I don't plan on entering, but I think it would be good to be a little more clear about level names and events. You say they're optional, but how exactly will it affect scoring? Say, for example, it's broken down like this (not that you provided a breakdown, just a total of 40 pts):

Functionality - 10 pts
Connectivity - 10 pts
Level Names - 10 pts
Events - 10 pts

If someone submits without level names or events, are they just losing out on 20 points? Will the weight of Functionality and Connectivity double to replace the 20 points that now can't be earned? It says there won't be a penalty, but I think it would be good to be a little more exact with how these things will factor in.
Think of it like a Chocolate Level Design Contest. No one is required to use anything outside the boundaries of vanilla SMW for their levels, but it's probably a given that people who put time into exploring the full depth of what's possible in a CLDC level will score higher. In this case, events and level names are not a requirement but they might be something that gives a submitter extra points over a level that doesn't. But we didn't want to attach scores to them because that can be a lot of extra work and this is the first year we've experimented with a format where people actually submit patches of their overworlds instead of just static images.
I have a question: Can the contestant edit submaps?

Yes, you have complete freedom on that front. Didn't mention them specifically in the main post to avoid complicating things; there are no restrictions on what you do (or don't do) with them.
I'll think about participating in this contest.
I've needed a good excuse to start a SMW project for awhile now and with me graduating soon that gives me plenty of time to make a solid entry. I'm very much looking forward to this.
I have a question:</span> You just have to edit the Overworld or you have to edit everything, with everything I mean I include the levels, events, etc ..??? #smw{o_O?}

The actual levels themselves won't be judged at all, though their placement in the overworld can matter a lot. Events are optional, in the sense that you can use them if you so desire but you won't be penalized for not doing so.

What if someone wants to add "Special World Passed" palettes? How would they activate them? What about switching back and forth?

Are we editing only one OW map, or are we completely reworking the entire map system for entries?
I hadn't intended to enter this contest, as I am no good at creating overworlds and never have been, but seeing the addition of the participant badge gives me motivation to give it a try.

Or at least consider it. Night shift leaves me dead tired usually.

The more the merrier! Whether you're an expert or a person who rarely touches overworlds, I still highly encourage you to give this contest a try. The sense of competition could help give you the experience to improve your skills and hopefully let you feel a little more capable the next time around.

Unless I'm misunderstanding your question, you're free to work with as many or as few of the submaps as you would like. This also includes the main map—you're allowed to just leave it be and work with only a couple submaps instead. That's completely on you.
So, you may have noticed that the level names have become an aspect of the judging process. Now you may be panicked, thinking "I have to come up with how many level names??". But fear not, for that is why I have arrived. I have compiled a list of excellent level names. You are free to use them, free or charge. Please make sure to design your overworld around them accordingly. And most importantly, best of luck in the contest.

for coders: this is a beta/dev build of pixi with integrated custom ow sprites support. however, this will also disable vanilla sprites. i included a working sprite in piranha_plant.asm if you're curious in how it works.

as for the rest, good luck with your entries. i already look forward to participating, myself. or should i say ourselves ;)

I think I might give it a try as well. I wasn't going to participate in this contest at first cuz I thought I wasn't patient enough to finish an overworld, but I thought why the hell not, so I want to see how good I can be. I've never created a "full" overworld and I rarely construct in overworld editor, so making what's possibly my maximum will be a lot of hindrance.
I have a Discord server as well! (by joining, you agree to the rules)

Basically, I believe in peace and bashing two bricks together.

I'm not in the SMWC discord but I want to post WIPs in a discord that has some SMWC folks in it. I don't think there are any judges there, but since there are unnamed backup judges there theoretically could be. Would it be a problem to post WIPs in a place like that, if I make a basic effort not to spoil the judges? If I do accidentally end up spoiling a judge, will I be penalized in the contest at all?

Also, while I was trying to figure out if there were any judges in that server, I noticed the judge list has the name "Kit" in a fancy blue font like a staff member might have. We have a user named "Kit" but they have an ordinary pink name. Is the fancy blue Kit the same as the ordinary pink Kit, or is the judge some other person?
I was leaning towards not entering this contest due to lacking the motivation to create an entirely new overworld, but I just remembered that I've still got a nearly-complete overworld that I made back in 2013 that I haven't used for anything, so I might just work with that and submit it for this contest.
