Windows 7 is going to end and I'm confused

Yep, I don't like Windows 8 or 10 that much, and I don't know if Linux have compatiblity with Lunar Magic, Golden Egg and other hacking stuff, neither games, so I dunno what should I do when January 14 2020 arrives :/

I'll miss Win 7 so much
Windows 7 itself isn't ending, it just won't receive official support. You'll still be able to use it just fine, but you will no longer receive updates.
Yes I know, but security updates are kinda of essential
They really aren't essential if you have decent anti-virus software. I'm actually considering going back down from windows 10 to 7 because I'm getting really tired of it.

I agree, Win 10 is even more unberable for me than Win 8 or any other O.S.

But even if we use Win 7 after the updates end, some features will probably be unusable or suffer incompatibility, and slowly turn into a obsolete O.S. like Win XP did (as much as I like XP too).

Unfortunately that's a fact.

Now, I know that Linux have compatibility with some games and emulators, but for the hacking tools? Wine do the job?

(also, sorry if my english is bad)
From developer side, users who refuses using up-to-date OS/browser is not really a good thing. Old environment support can be a nightmare.

If you ever want to program stuff, you need APIs to achieve stuff you would like to implement. An up-to-date environment (no matter OSes, browsers, runtimes, etc.) would make developers painless, since they could take advantage of new APIs, and make software developing more efficient.

The most significance example is web development. Do you know there were a long painful moment when countless web developers fights with that featureless and insecure Internet Explorer 6, just because there are so many users using such old browser even Internet Explorer 9+ already become a thing at that time?

Obviously, I am not meaning we just abandon supports of older environments easily. But if there are less users using old environments, we can consider just drop support them and put more effort into user experiences and software quality. You see, there are not so many mainstream PC software still consider supporting Windows 95 in the latest version now, are they?

Let's back into the Windows 7 stuff. Though these softwares (Chrome, Steam, Dropbox, etc.) probably still support Windows 7 for a while even after the official end-of-life just like Windows XP, it's still highly recommended to using the latest revision of Windows 10, or just another up-to-date operating system like macOS or Linux. Wine and Mono is actually not that bad for SMW Hacking tools now.

I also missing Windows 7 but meh
Thank you so much for the info! Really appreciate.

I think i'll eventually give a try on Linux Mint, and maybe have a Windows 10 on a dual boot, ya know, for "Windows only" stuff.

Anyway, thank u very much!

only consumer editions of Windows 7 (Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium and Ultimate) will go out of support on Jan. 14, 2020.

those using Pro or Enterprise editions can get paid extended support for Win7 updates until Jan. 2023 but they will be expensive.

For users of Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Enterprise, you can purchase extended security updates through January 2023.
If there's mass protest against the end of support for Windows 7, I'll be interested. I still own a Windows 7 computer that I'm currently not using cuz my father didn't want to connect it with Internet.

Basically, I believe in peace and bashing two bricks together.

Windows 7 was my most used OS (used it from 2014 to 2018), and I liked it (despite my old computer being slow as hell, trust me, I wasn't even able to emulate 50% of the n64 games at 60fps)...
Now I use Windows 8.1, and despite being quite confusing, it's not that hard to get used to it, specially when I have installed ClassicShell (a program that restores some things from other older windows OS).
Although my first and favourite OS was XP, I still like 7.
It's sad to see it stop getting support...
RIP my friend's Ridley, he dropped it cuz I combo'd him a bit tol much as Mario.

Tip:
I tried to make my newer computer use 7 but it can't even recognize some of my hardware and caused problems.

So basically I am forced to use 10 or Ubuntu, but this is my gaming machine so RIP!

That and the idea of it limiting what games I can play would really start to suck after a time.

If your computer was manufactured in 2018 or later (or has Intel Coffee Lake processors, AMD Ryzen "Raven Ridge" hardware or newer), then it most likely will not run Windows 7 - manufacturers for these kinds of hardware did not develop any W7 drivers for them.

Intel Kaby Lake hardware, AMD Ryzen (1st generation like Summit Ridge or Pinnacle Ridge) & older based PCs can use Win7 or 8.1.

alternatively you could run an LTSB/LTSC edition of Win10 [not the "normal" editions of Win10 like the Home and/or Professional editions], which I'm doing on my bedroom PC - w10 ltsc almost nearly runs as good as Win7
I feel like Windows 10 is forced. Although I see people dislike the fact Windows 8 and 8.1 use two different interfaces and the visual style of Start Menu, I can use 8.1 just fine and I find its design okay. Heck, I even find this OS underrated even despite Start Menu not feeling the same as before. I too prefer the older Start Menu, but I don't dislike the one from Windows 8 and 8.1. It's understandable why people don't use 8 - it doesn't have Start icon in the same place as before and its support ended.

Uhhh Windows 7 users? I just found this in system32 after updating. It seems to be some sort of warning, but I can't run it, even as an administrator. Anyone else?

Also, in "honour" of Windows 7's death, I've changed my desktop background to a desaturated Windows 7 background. I dislike the looks of Windows 10 compared to 7, but it seems to be a better option overall.

Edit: It seems to start for about half a second in Task Manager. I'll do more "research".
Hello.
only "free" extended support for Windows 7 ended Tuesday January 14, 2020.

newer Windows 7 updates made from February 2020 and later will only be available to those who paid for Extended Security Update licenses as noted in this support article and in this MS Tech Community blog.
good information over here.

that's crappy that they make you pay for extended but at the same time that's the only way for support now

Microsoft didn't aim these paid updates to most people using Windows 7, instead these are aimed at businesses or large corporations which rely too much on Windows 7 to just make the transition over night, at least, not without the risk of the entire system falling apart. These companies are more than willing to pay any price to get more support for their existing system, they're literally buying more time for themselves.
