I mean, of course it's going to be a bit of a popularity contest.
If you're more well known in the community people will actually take the time to write something.

Heh. You'd think that, with 37,583 user accounts, statistically speaking, there should be a birthday for at least one of our users everyday. 😙

I honestly forgot the birthday thread was even a thing. Seems like it was started in 2017 though, which I think was around the time I stopped being active for a few years? Still feels really weird thinking about that, heh. The whole disappearing from the community thing, and now I feel somewhat out of touch. Even if I never was the most "in-touch" person back when I was originally active.

Also heck, happy belated birthday K.T.B.!

I think I posted in the birthday thread once, but basically forgot about it after that. It didn't matter much to me anyway.
SMWC as a whole really does matter to me though. It's basically the reason I started wanting to make actual, non-hacked games. I've made friends here. It really is quite a pleasant experience.

Reach out to people you take interest in, if they're not assholes and you aren't either they shouldn't have any problem talking to you.

Yeah like, engage with people a bit more. They won't approach you if you don't do the same to them first, much less if you can't think of an interesting subject to a conversation (speaking from personal experience). Most of us are on our official Discord server, so why don't you try to create an account and join there?

As for the birthday thread, there's no one to blame for not wishing "happy birthday" to others, really. Even I am bound to fail with my closest friends. I don't think we should view it as a popularity contest just because well known people receive birthday wishes. Nowadays I barely post there for either not remembering to post or the fact that I can't do it on the behalf of everyone.

Ohhh, so that's how it's done?

Now I see why no one is friends with me... I have to reach to them first

But I don't know if I'm worth the time...

would you be my friend? pls

People forget about the birthday thread cause it's impossible to know when it's someone's birthday unless you check that thread, and I definitely don't wake up every morning (or any morning at all) thinking about the birthday thread when I think about checking things.
I'm pretty sure birthday notifications in this site were thought about, as we currently have a useless birthdate field in Edit Profile. That is what would make that thread useful.

Also to make internet friends you moan less and join a chat (Discord). You just hardly will make friends in forum posts. It's not instantaneous enough for the mundane interactions that build relationships.
It's easily the best thing I've done
So why the empty numb?
I didn't even remember there was a birthdate field until you pointed it out... what purpose was it for other than for the sake of logging your birthdate? Since it didn't even notify anyone cause it's not automated like the birthday thread is. Maybe it could be done as so.

I was imagining something more like having the option to subscribe to the birthday thread, though now that I think about it, the only way for Alcarobot to notify you would probably be to send you a PM, which doesn't sound so nice... Maybe all registered members should be able to see a display on the site layout saying whose birthday it is. Like you said, this would more likely be based on the birthdate field you fill on your profile

Also yes if you want to make friends easily here, chatting platforms (IRC then, discord now) are the way to go. I wasn't acquainted with nobody here until I joined IRC and then somehow got into a "gang"
There are still people here who I would be interested to talk with but haven't ever gotten the chance to!
I was just kidding around in my last post, but if people care much then maybe we could do a thing that other forums I've seen do where there's always like a birthday cake or some other symbol at the top of the page always with the names of whomever's birthday it is next to it.

It's definitely a minor thing and I don't imagine it being near the top of the priority list for coders, but I would honestly love to see something small like this implemented (or to at least have the option to do so in the profile settings).
Today's my birthday and I don't care if I'm loved or not when nobody's posted in the thread. I was of course kidding talking that nobody posts there because it's more occasional than it used to be.

Speaking of the option, I immediately got reminded me of how DeviantArt handles people's birthdays. Yeah, not everybody would desire to see everyone's birthday every day so we should leave whether to display birthdays or not as an option. If we implement it, not only will the birth date field become actually useful, but it'll also be more likely we know about the birthday of a person we appreciate.

Basically, I believe in peace and bashing two bricks together.

Starting my first day working at a bowling alley today and I'm super nervous. Always about the same thing. Whether I'll be able to effectively execute and understand what is being told to me by my trainers and superiors and hopefully not be fired my first day. ANXIETY!

Wish me luck, all.

yeah first days are always rough, but heres how you can become an unfireable employee:

1. watch how other people do the work
2. do it better

FTFY. Having no expectations always helps. Remember that people don't owe you anything. Just go in, do your work as ordered, and don't show anyone up. That's the general gist of things.
