What tileset should I do next?

You found me!

Update 1: So the next set will be a sky set it seems! Don't worry, even though the poll is closed I will still probably have time for one more set, so keep the suggestions flowing!

Anyway, welcome to my tileset suggestion thread! I've never done this sort of thing before but I think it will be fun. Anything drawn for this will be released.
So what am I going to draw? Tilesets of course! So no sprites. soz.
As for what kind of tilesets, you guys decide. FG, layer 3, BGs to a degree, even 8-bit/8-bit styled!

As for rules and restrictions:

1. No ridiculous suggestions (this should be obvious). Should not be larger than 1 map 16 page for a FG or BG or take up 1000000 ExGFX files.
2. Serious suggestions only. Joke/meme suggestions will be ignored.
3. Suggest a BG at your own risk. They take a lot longer to draw and rip than a FG, so BG aren't going to be prioritized over any other tileset.
4. If the suggestion is based off of something else, please try to provide a reference I could use.
5. No sprites. Pls don't ask why. #smrpg{ohno}
6. Suggestions for tilesets that are not 16x16 are okay too, though the most I can do for you is give you a .png of the tile mapping. The rest would be up to you.

All tilesets will have a link to their download page when they are finished being exported. If there is no link, then the set hasn't been exported yet even if it's been completed.

Finished Tilesets

Most tilesets have not been exported to SMW yet because of how long it takes to do so. Most are ready to be exported so that will be done when C3 is over.

City
  • FG takes up FG2 and FG3 slots. Can still use props like doors, moons, star blocks, goal posts, vines, grass, animated blocks, etc.

Oriental
  • Something for a personal project, but will be released at a later date.

Crystal
  • No BG planned. Will only make if there's interest.

Meatland
  • BG is layer 3.
  • layer 2 BG can be worked on if there's enough interest.

Swamp
  • Could use a layer 2 or 3 BG if there's enough time.

Sky
  • Takes up FG1 and FG3. Replaces FG1, but allows use of all the extra tiles there except bushes and slanted pipes.
  • Has cloud ground, platforms, pillars, blocks, bean stalks, and various tiles help other blocks sit on the clouds correctly.

How about a dungeon that contains jail tilesets for NPCs that are inside and can be interacted?

or...

A modern city for town hub-like levels

Have a frost day~
A tileset from FF5's Cleft of Dimensions's last floor...which is crystalline with some minor tree growth. BG is optional though is starry with floating islands if you want to do that.

EDIT - Battle background

EDIT 2 - Should be fitting with SMW Redrawn's graphic style.
Modern Redrawn Mario Bros. 1.5 (last update - February 14, 2023, some new bonus frames, tons of minor touchups to various poses)

On Pixel Art Requests: Depends on what it is and if I have the time for it. If its complex and I don't have the time, don't expect me to accept it.

Oh, I could give you so many suggestions...I can think of several level themes that are seriously underrepresented in the graphics section, and more good Layer 3 backgrounds and foreground effects are always welcome. Beyond that, here are some possibilities in approximate order of importance:

- A volcanic tileset (FG, BG, and presumably Layer 3 background and/or Layer 3 foreground lava). There don't seem to be as many of those around as you'd think.
- A crystal tileset (see the foreground from Crystal Snail's stage and the background from Slipslide Ride for reference). There are pretty much no good tilesets for this theme.
- A factory tileset.
- A mine tileset (and background). I'm not sure what a good reference point for this would be, though.
- A good snow tileset. There aren't as many of these as you'd expect either.
- A good mountain tileset (perhaps something like this or this but more advanced?).
- A sky tileset. Most of the existing ones have pretty bland clouds and scenery.
- A bramble tileset. Admittedly, it's not a terribly common level theme, but the pickings for graphics for it are pretty slim.
- An oriental tileset, which are in pretty short supply (and backgrounds even more so).

Obviously, I wouldn't expect you to do all of them, but those should give you some ideas.

Oh, and I would assume it goes without saying, but none of them should be 8-bit-styled.

I'm working on a hack! Check it out here. Progress: 64/95 levels.
A 8-bit City Tileset and Background Objects.
A custom 8-bit Overworld graphics. on Project "SMB: Legendary of the 8 Jewels".

a.k.a Alex-Standler17 or Standler.
How about a Peach's Castle Roof Tileset? Could be nice to build levels based on going on top of her castle.

(rip my other userbars momentarily)

Update on a tileset. Haven't exported it yet, but here's a little sneak peak of a city fg.

Will probably export this before working on the next one.

Looks like 2 votes for a crystal so that would probably be next, or a volcano or the mine. We'll see #smrpg{:D}

That actually looks pretty good, as usual of your caliber. Also as an aside, you could experiment with different building material patterns since no two buildings are the same in IRL cities.

How about a pirate's grotto/cave tileset? Haven't seen many of those around, and it could provide a way to make a level inspired by Keelhaul Key from Paper Mario 2 or Fortune Isle from Color Splash:

As for Mario's Nightmare Quest? Well, it's currently on Fusion Gameworks, ROM Hacking.net or the GCN at the moment.
I love your stuff, but I just had to stop by and say that city tileset you have in progress is absolutely marvelous so far. That's such a hard theme to pull off, and what you have there looks very promising.

As for a theme, one I had in mind is a swamp with pieces of an abandoned pier. For the wood, you could base youself off of SMW's ghost house and/or SMAS SMB3's wood. Absolutely no rush, it's just something I would like to see.
It's easily the best thing I've done
So why the empty numb?
Smw styled desert?
I should try. I'm thinking of a meat land with a FG and BG.
First tileset finally exported to SMW bois.

A preview of the gfx. The lamps are palette animated as well.

As mentioned in the readme, while the file takes up the FG2 slot as well, it allows users to still use goal posts, moons, doors, vines, star blocks, pink triangles, arrow signs, etc.
It only uses palette row 2. The cement block shown works with the normal row 4 colors. I tried to make the tilesets as user friendly as possible so that took a while to organize. Hope you guys like it!
How about Battlefield from Smash?

allow shy guy emojis in post footers you cowards!
Wow that's a lot of suggestions. I'll see what I can come up with. I might have to delay exporting the tilesets until after I finish drawing everything #smrpg{sick}

In the meantime, here's a preview of the next set.

As for an oriental set, I sorta already have one I'm drawing right now, thought I am going to be using it for something else so it would be released at a later date. Here's a preview of it as well.

Since the crystal set is almost done I'm probably going to do something I haven't really done so the next will probably be one of the following 3:
  1. beach/pirate
  2. misty swamp
  3. meatland

Which one of the three would you guys like to see next?
While the crystal set is not what I wanted exactly (which should be more in line with the cleft of dimensions texture), it is a rather gorgeous set that has its wide uses. Id suggest for the décor crystals personally to experiment with this kind of refractive shading seen in other crystal sets like this one and this one.

Agreed. It looks pretty dull as it is (as in not shiny, not boring). The Slipslide Ride background I linked is another such example. And the background walls could have more in the middle than just a solid color, too.

Also, out of those three, I'd like the swamp best.

dalkglkadjg.

This is pretty much it. I wanna change some stuff but that would probably be closer to when I export this to smw. I wanna get to other tilesets. I guess I'll wait a bit for other suggestions.

Reminder: I'm currently choosing between

  1. Beach/pirate
  2. Misty swamp
  3. Meatland

How about we just go with a *really* trippy tileset? Go wild.
I'm gonna ask for a very simple thing. A 16x16 outlined block with a 90° flipped triangle inside it. So something like this (very bad drawing):
