Lunar Magic suggestions and discussion (LM v3.40)

Tool

Alright thanks, it's been fixed for the next version.
Something interesting (But probably too hard to implement to bother with) would be creating a system that lets you organize ExGFX(or GFX) files by name.

e.g.

AExGFX80
BExGFX81

Where it ignores everything before ExGFX[number].

It seems like it'd be useful for hacks that have a lot of custom graphics (most of them) although it's understandable if implementing it would be a huge pain.
This might be an odd request but could you add a toggle for what file extension to use for graphics? The .bin extension always opens to the wrong format in YY-CHR and other stuff uses .bin, so
Things i want to say to Fusoya:

1) Would you implement an "increase of size" of the main OW? Is it too hard to do? Need patch?

2) Whenever i open another rom while with overworld window, the overworld didn't changed.

3) Would you implement a Mode 7 editor in Lunar Magic?

4) Would you release the next version of Lunar Magic in Christmas?
Would you put layer 4 editor for lunar magic

That's a known "bug" of years, but it's more of an advantage so people who port to a new ROM don't have to remake the map and events all over again. It's as simple as closing LM and then reopening it.
I don't know if FuSoYa would be willing to fix this though.

I vaguely remember emailing him about it many years ago and he said it was intentional. You don't even have to reload the ROM to "fix" it - just press the reload button in the Overworld Editor.

I thought so :P
And yeah, that works too.

Re: the Windows color dialog thing: yes, it was an issue on my end, as confirmed by the same behavior persisting in other programs that use it. However, it's present on my PC as well as the laptop I was using at the time, which even runs a different Windows version, so now I have no clue what to do :/

(E) I found a fix. No clue why it was broken, but yeah

And yeah bug report, if the ROM crashes in LMSW the Lunar Magic session stops responding to inputs. Windows doesn't detect it as "unresponsive" and I can only close it via right clicking it on the taskbar. Specifically this occurs because the SA-1 chip is installed on my ROM and LMSW doesn't support it, so do that if you're trying to recreate the issue.

Not sure about that, you could end up with situations where 2 or more files would be able to qualify for the same ExGFX file #.

Have thought about doing something for that before (like perhaps using .8x8 file extension instead). Maybe someday.

That mode only allows for 4 color tiles I believe.

Don't think that'd be on LM's end.

No plans at the moment.

That's intentional for allowing to transfer to other ROMs, as everyone else said.

What makes you think I'd do a release on Christmas?

*reads changing the levels dimensions*
OMG!!!!!

Nice integration, thank you very much, this is sooo helpful for me!
Can't wait to get to my laptop to try it out!
Great job!

EDIT: NICE!!
Also really nice additions like the surface view, great update #tb{:]}

This is incredible, I wouldn't have expected a major new version so soon after my return to the scene. Really awesome work FuSoYa and Vitor, I especially love the possibility of making levels with variable dimensions!

I still want to report a minor issue I'm having (since it's Christmas I can't look into it further right now). My hack which I finished last week is working perfectly. But if I now open it and save any level with the new LM (without actually changing anything), the hack will crash after the "Nintendo Presents" screen (black screen, playing random sounds etc.).
Hack is 2MB, uses SA-1. Does this happen to anyone else or did I simply overlook something obvious?

Also another question: LM now displays normal "Do Nothing" entrances as Mario riding on Yoshi (or what's supposed to be Yoshi, it's using empty sprite map16 slots), is there a way to change that somewhere?
It's understandable. While designing the sprite system I had to change partially how SA-1 Pack worked and hence your ROM is crashing currently. Please download the latest version of SA-1 Pack here and let me know if your ROM works normally again.

After doing that, don't forget then to update your Sprite Tool and run though as well.

You can do in the following order:

SA-1 Pack -> LM -> Sprite Tool; or
LM -> SA-1 Pack -> Sprite Tool.

If still after doing these procedures you get a crash, please PM me your ROM and I'll investigate it.

Merry christmas!

This is incredible! I'm lost for words.

Again, the new version's changelog is on my list of the most engaging reads of the year. It's still hard to believe all the new features (introduced all at once, no less!) are real. We can't thank FuSoYa and Vitor enough for all their hard work and dedication.

It's a little unfortunate that some of the new features that used to require patches and might be out of LM's scope are now bundled and closed-source. Other than that, though, this is a really exciting Christmas gift!

I'll be porting my hack in a bit, and I'll let you know if things go awry. (Wouldn't be surprised to see two or three new hotfix versions, given how packed it is with brand-new features.)

What a great Christmas gift! I read through the changelog and I no joke thought I was dreaming when I saw some of the stuff that was added. Especially the fact that levels can now have different dimensions, as that sounded like one of those "never in a million years" sort of things.

Looks like I'm going to be busy with disassembling the new ASM so I can use the new features in my hack and document the new hijacks. I'm especially curious of figuring out whatever sorcery was used to make the custom level dimensions possible. XD
My Hacks:
Mario's Strange Quest V1.6
Yoshi's Strange Quest V1.3 / V1.3.1 Beta 4.6
Mario & Yoshi's Strange Quests (2/10/2023 Build)

Other stuff:
My SMW/SMAS/SMAS+W disassembly
Yoshifanatic's Discord Server: A place for fans of my stuff and/or Yoshi to chat with others.
Suggestion: An option that's similar to Ctrl + Del (removes everything inside of a level), but it affects all levels in one go. I don't know if this has been suggested in the past, but I feel like this would be at the very least convenient for people who want to start a new hack with all levels being "clean".

In case this has already been suggested in the past and you rejected it before, then... just pretend I never made this post.
I play forum games and draw furries. I'm mostly active on Discord and Twitter.

This is the best thing to happen to Mario hacking in some time. Hats off to you Fusoya and Vitor, and your neverending tricks! I'm going to have to radically rethink my whole hack with these new level dimensions, and I'm going to have a blast doing it. That said there are a few patches that don't work at all in this new version - I know Wall Jump and Horizontal Scroll Fix all seem to fail spectacularly now, so word of warning to the reckless.

Lastly, I feel a bit selfish asking for new features right after the boatload of new features we just got, but could there be (or is there already) something to make transferring everything from one rom to another a bit easier? Saving every level individually to a file and then reloading them on another rom takes a while, especially since secondary exits often don't get loaded in on the first pass.

Thanks a million for everything, again!

Other Submissions of mine!
I tried to open the new version of Lunar Magic, but have virus.
No it doesn't, it's a false positive. This has happened before and you just have to bypass the warning.
As a rule of thumb: SMWC is generally trustworthy. The only time you ever should be careful are unmoderated tool (there were legitime viruses uploaded) but these don't get behind our radar.

Even moreso for old timers like FuSoYa who has got no real reason to put a virus, even moreso if a second dev (Vitor) is another old timer without any reason to upload a virus.
