Yoshi's Island Level Design Contest 2018 | Discussion & Resources

Non-SMW

Okay. I think I was able to insert the music in xkas, but it did not say it was successful so I don't know what is wrong. Like I mentioned before, now I just get an enhanced version of the SMW2 castle music instead of the custom music.

Now, I get different music for the introduction, but I just get the title screen music in 1-1, and I'm trying to insert the song from the castle in Super Mario 3D Land.

I change the .mml file to 18. Then, after I use AddMusicY_Beta.exe, I type:

E:\OLD_Drive\AddMusicY_Beta>xkas insert.asm smw2contest001.smc

It does not say if it was successful, but it does not give me an error either. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance.

Edit:

I am trying to use the Jungle tileset that was in Kamek's Revenge or something w/the Lunge Fish and the bandits if anyone remembers that one. What am I doing wrong? I get the black squares shown in the screenshot for some reason and the Lunge Fish appear fine, but the bandits are garbled. It has a submarine part with a part where you get out of the water for the first part. Can someone please help me? I remember it looked garbled in Golden Egg, and there were letters or something, but it appeared fine in the game.

Should I post a video of the first part so people can get an idea? Then, I will use the random doors from Bowser's castle. I want to keep the rest a surprise though.
This may have been discussed already, I don't know.

Does the level NEED to have custom graphics, music, and ASM to score even remotely well? Does a largely vanilla level score badly by default? I know contests aren't necessarily geared towards noobs, but.

No, it's not necessary, but if you plan to insert any custom resources in your entry, make sure they fit and work well. After all, what really matters is how fun it is to play, that's a given.

Are you alive or just breathing?
Alright, great! In hindsight, in the case custom assets were a prerequisite, I probably should have posted this question before starting on my level because I've already made significant progress and I definitely would've been peeved had I needed to start again.

Appreciate ya, Katerpie!

@Lespna1 My immediate impression regarding the background graphics is that you're probably using the wrong level mode for the submarine water BG3.

Also, the bandits being garbled means that they aren't in the spriteset you're using. If you want to use the bandits with the Lunge Fish, you're going to have to edit your spriteset.
I want to note some progress: Paths 1, 2, 3 and 4 are done. Now I need to edit the "boss room" and I'll release my entry.

Oh, I remember it being used w/the bandits and the Lunge Fish before so I was going to open the ROM to see the sprite set, but the ROM was locked.

Also, I forgot: if we make a castle level, will they be overcritical if we don't have a boss? I don't know if it's possible to make a boss room work if you enter the level from 1-1. If you put the entrance from the level to the boss room, will it work in 1-1?

I will try to post some progress soon. I also noticed some people were posting videos of their submission in the Submissions thread. Is that okay and if we update our level, do we just update the post?
A boss is not necessary to have in a castle stage. Also, a boss door in 1-1 will work, provided that the desired boss is assigned to world 1.

You don't have to submit a video, but it's not against the rules to have one in your submission post. Note that it's not considered a replacement for the required text file.

I'll be downloading and compiling the entries after the contest deadline, so simply editing your forum post to post a new link should be fine.
By "boss room", I meant a "chase" section.
I was responding to Lespna's post.
I've got one more question in regards to judging.
How subjective are judges allowed to be when scoring? I get that a level obviously needs to be fun and not boring. But will there be any scores that were given because levels "didn't fit my taste?"

Sorry for asking. This is the first contest I've ever entered so I just want to be clear on the details. First of all I don't expect to score well anyway haha, but you know.

Judging is almost entirely subjective. That's why there's multiple judges.
My entry is complete. Not sure if I missed something. I fixed what I could. Check the Rules and Submissions thread for download.
Since today marks exactly 30 days from the deadline, I figured I should make an update post with a couple of quick announcements.

trihex announced a little while ago that he plans to stream his blind playthroughs of the entries on December 31st.

Regarding prizes, the top 3 finishers will each receive their choice of a Steam or Humble key from the site's collection.

Good luck!
I don't know if it's too early to ask this, but is there a chance there might be a short extension for the deadline? Last time, we had two months, and there were not a lot of entries so I think there was one, as far as I can remember, but this time, there were only like 55 days. I'm trying to work really hard on my level tonight, but I wanted to add a few extra things like make it so the star counter will go higher than 30 and possibly add custom music if I have time.
Currently there aren't plans for any extensions.
@Lespna1: If you do increase stars, wouldn't you need to sacrifice something else? Like the red coins or flowers for example?
@XenonZed: If I do end up in top 3, then a medal is good enough for me.

I didn't think of that and what do you mean by "sacrifice"? Will the stars erase the flowers or the red coins or will they be overcritical if I make it so you can get up to like 50 stars as long as you can still get 20 red coins and 5 flowers in the level as long as I state that and if I tell where all of them are?
"Sacrifice" as in, if you wanted the extra stars to contribute to the 100% score, you'd most likely need to also reduce the number of red coins or flowers that must be collected.
Oh, would that be all right to do as long as you can get 100% as long as I state that in the Readme file or something?
