Why can't I get any feedback

We make these hacks for one purpose: for people to enjoy them. But how can I make it more enjoyable if no one gives me any feedback? Is it normal for someone to just click download and play and then move on? No ratings or comments make me feel like I made it for nothing, I don't give a damn about download counts. If someone hates it then let me know why amirite? Is it cause I don't make kaizo hacks? Or my hacks are too weird? I just try to make them different than what you usually see these days. I dunno maybe I'm thinking about it too hard but I feel no need to continue making anything else if what I create isn't even worth mentioning.

I feel you a lot there, as I have been (and still am with my current project) in this very same issue and I have done some self-destructive things in the heat of my own moments of anger, with people disliking me (and some outright hating me for it), so forgive me to those who would very well take what I am about to say as being hypocritical to your conceptions of me, as this is awkward for me to be in this position to break it down. (Consider that a disclaimer)

But anyways unfortunately, that's how it is as a content creator, being one myself with not only SMW hacking, but pixel art, which I am still learning how to master. It is a universal feeling with anyone pursuing any form of art. All you need to do is keep shouldering on, continue to show effort in it, as much as I hate it myself for it being a largely thankless thing that I have vented about it before in other places. Because frankly, it is a thankless thing, as much as I hate to admit that (and I still wish it wasn't).

Peoples' works that get popular is a combination of luck of the draw, what is shown to them generally is appealing to their tastes, usually on the creative fronts such as the gimmicks being employed, making original assets, and the like to create a "Wow" Factor (which admittedly I still struggle with that myself as with most people's hacks I have encountered), and as a result, they know how to capitalize on those things, which is why certain hacks like Sicari Remastered, Brutal Mario, and JUMP get talked about a lot on here and hell, two of which I just said are on the featured hack list. Who knows if yours could be next in line to be getting more feedback, just keep doing what you are doing with your works. People may notice eventually. It is a process that only ends when you feel like it should end. And btw, that is also how it is with team projects which is this very same issue but on hard mode, at least with my experiences and observations.

As for my personal opinions of your hacks, I have definitely seen your screenshots and while personally the visual style of it looks unappealing to me since it is what id see out of parodies of things that have stylistic suck as trope used, but I suppose its part of your hacks' charm and I would suggest playing that up more.
It's perfectly normal for you to not receive any feedback at all. It's not a matter of the hack being "weird" or "not appealing". I have been through this situation a couple times before, and that coming from a long-time SMW hacker. I even gave up on an earlier hack due to lack of feedback [which is already this stupid of a reason, but I was a kid, mind you]. It just happens that people will criticize your hack whenever they want.
I haven't seen much of your hacks so I can't say how it looks like for sure but I can assure you that regardless of its state people will criticize it. If your hack is different from other average hacks, good for you. After all, it's your style. The design itself is pretty much one of the main factors that can draw enough attention to your hack.

people dont leave feedback on hacks because they dont have anything to say about hacks because 97% of the hacks that get uploaded to the site are passable at best and boring at their worst and there's not really anything to say about them.

I think a lack of feedback is a stronger indicator of the public opinion of your hack then anything, because it means the people that played it walked away without anything to say about it, positive or negative. And ur hack just exists in that boring neutral space where the player immediately forgets the entire experience.

Either that or its the language barrier; a lot of people playing hacks that arent confident enough in their english to leave a review #thp{T_T}}
ask me if i give a f*ck...
I can see where you all are coming from. I was thinking too hard last night. But I wasn't looking for fame, just an opinion or two. I know most people won't get the odd style I like to use. I could just download the same HP meter patch you always see or that realistic icy mountain BG. But I use no patches, I hex edit everything and draw everything myself. But hate it or love it, I'd still like to know :p

Well I appreciate that hobz, and I appreciate everyone's responses to this. It was a rant but one that I needed to say.

This is not only your problem, a lot of users don't recieve feedback, is because smwc is dying and also because people is lazy and don't want to write something about something.

Now i saw your hack "Paul 96" and i think that the graphics needs more details, they are very flat, also the selection of colors looks weird. I recommend you ask on the discord of smwc on the channel #showoff how to improve your graphics skills.

Its just always been tough to get enough detail into things that are in such small places, especially with Paul seeing as he's more proportionate to a human while Mario has a big head and small body.

I gotta admit, seeing the words "smwc is dying" made me sad...I think the sky got darker when I read that

SMWCentral is dying? When did this begin to happen? That can't happen! No way, man! This site is my childhood and my adulthood!

It's just a matter of plowing through. I do agree with Anonimzwx on the visuals of your hack but I've grown weary from vanilla hacks/graphics so anything is a breath of fresh air.
Self-Made Island will play just about any hack.

But now, to the point, just take it easy and pace yourself. The New Year is not too far so perhaps we'll have some sort of "renaissance." I've considered taking one of your music requests but aside from laziness (I won't lie #fim{XD}) my software libraries are much more orchestral focused unless you like Roland Sounds.
About that music request, I put that up when I had the idea to feature a 90's soundtrack but that idea will take way too damn long to acquire all those spc's. so I decided I would write my own songs and see if I can get someone to port them.

I don't really finish more difficult hacks because they're too difficult for me. I like playing hacks in the "easy" category, and if I find a really creative hack or simply one that stood out from the crowd, I'll leave a comment and a rating.

About the feedback topic: I think that when you make a hack you should strive to make it for you to enojoy it (both the creation and playing process) or for a friend/familiar, not for the grand public. If they find lots of flaws/don't apport feedback - well, someone important to you can give you feedback (or even yourself will see your hack's flaws from your point of view, and those are what are important, not what the rest of people think). Even then, if you want quick feedback, you could always use discord.

About the "SMWC is dying" assertion: I think is simply not true. Altough maybe it had more users or activity in the past, I think we have reached a point where we host so many resources it's hard to see everybody will leave the forums/discord (which is fairly active, btw).

PD: Try patches instead of hex-editing. They are thousands of times better and quicker in the long run.

What makes you think that?

The site's not as active as it used to be back in the glory days of SMW hacking, but to say that it's dying is a bit much. I think Discord has replaced a lot of conversation on the forum since it provides a much better community service than IRC ever did. People don't need to post in the general purpose Screenshots thread because they can just post in discord and get instant feedback from others. Same goes for quick help or conversations with others.

As for why you have trouble getting feedback, it does come down to where you're posting stuff and laziness on the part of people playing/viewing your hacks. There's also definitely a bit of superiority when it comes to how people view hacks, in that they're more likely to respond to something they think looks *amazing* more than something that just looks good. It's hard to get by just being good now, and I wish that wasn't the case, but to change that would mean trying to change the site culture and how people think about projects, something that's a lot easier said than done. I feel you though. Lack of good feedback is a really bad demotivator...
Looks like I better get discord then

As for patches, I could never get asar to work. For years I wondered why it would say it worked only to have no effect. Nobody could figure it out. Then way later I randomly stumbled on a comment made by Alcaro somewhere saying it doesn't work on .SFC files...that should probably be stated on the download page somewhere. I found hex editing to be much more fun anyway, plenty of room to experiment.

Discord is a good place to start. Being an active part of the community is also good way to get more feedback on your projects. Personally I only have so much time to play hacks and listen to music and I am much more likely to comment on stuff for people I know and recognize.

Don't take it personally. It can be very hard to get feedback sometimes here. Some people are just to lazy to type something up :P

Yeah, unless I really like something or it's a meme, I'm usually too lazy to comment, even if the thing is pretty cool.
