Freedom Planet / Freedom Planet 2

It all started out as a Sonic the Hedgehog fangame project, but eventually transformed into an original platformer inspired by the said videogame series, GalaxyTrail's Freedom Planet series puts you into the shoes of anthropomorphic heroines—Sash Lilac (a.k.a. Little Miss Heropants), Carol Tea, and Milla Basset—on a mission to save the world of Avalice from a looming evil threat. Focusing more on story and combat rather than fast-paced platforming, the series has gained attraction by fans and fans of platforming games at heart. So far, the series has spawned two games—one released in 2014, and the sequel, Freedom Planet 2, which will be released this year.

Are you up to it? Well, discuss.
EDIT (7/1/2016): Wow... I must believe that my memory has been clarified and finally someone discussed about it because of the magic of my palindromatic post.

I enjoyed Freedom Planet a lot when I first played it months ago. I was primarily inclined to get it after seeing Somecallmejohnny's review of it. As a person who really enjoys the Sonic games, and seeing how similar Freedom Planet was to the classic Sonic games, I couldn't help but get it eventually. Basically, I enjoyed the gameplay a lot, and having four characters to choose from makes it more enjoyable. Though, the levels can be quite long. Like, really long. Most levels take around 10 minutes or more to complete. The final stage alone took me over 30 minutes, counting time spent on the final boss. The story, though, is really just all over the place. Sometimes it's confusing, and it doesn't help that the voice acting is... questionable. Sometimes it's great, other times it just makes me want to skip the cutscenes entirely. And be ready for those cutscenes, too, because there are a lot of them. The four main characters are great, though I feel like one of them could have had a larger backstory.

Overall, I liked the game, and I'm very much looking forward to its sequel (which was announced last December).
this thread is a binding contract that you will never, ever post another freedom planet related thing outside of it.

about the game: yes, it's quite good. feels like the old sonic games, and the soundtrack and graphics are really cool. the characters/voice actors/storyline can go die in a hole though. probably some of the cringiest material i've ever seen - feels like a bad sonic fanfic (and half of the characters have zero purpose).
it IS a bad sonic fanfic!

I really do enjoy the game. Its the first good sonic fangame I'm a little excited for the sequel.

You two are joking, right? For the first time since 2009, we actually have the closest thing to likeable characters in a sonic-based game. Bring on Fp2!!!

that's not saying much is it LOL
Since 2009? Most fans would probably say since 1994...

Well, I have 42 hours logged on the game on Steam and also managed to buy the Wii U version so that should tell you how much I adore the game. I really just think it's a lot of fun and easy to pick up to play and kill time with. The main influence is obviously Sonic but it also has influences from other classics such as Gunstar Heroes and Rocket Knight Adventures which are both games I enjoy a lot. (More than Sonic anyway...)

The story however is really poor...I mean I like the concept and the characters for the most part but the writing and execution were pretty bad. It started off kind of strong up until the point where you meet
Mayor Zao
then it kind of starts to become a mess. I have no problem with a story trying to have it's own style but I felt they tried a bit too hard at points. There were a couple parts that stopped it from being all bad such as anything involving
Brevon
and
Magister
but by the end of the game your just left with too many questions and things just don't wrap up in the greatest way.

I'm still trying to answer these questions...

1. Where the hell did Milla come from? Sadly her Adventure Mode didn't even answer those questions.

2. What exactly went down in the red scarfs to cause a drift in Lilac and Carol's relationship with Spade.

3. What happened with Spade and Prince Dail at the end?

I mean I'm not asking for something deep but if they're going to bother to throw 15 minute cut scenes our way some of that time could've been spent letting us know a few things. With that said I am really looking forward to the sequel. I just hope the story is miles better than the first game.

I ADORE THIS GAME!!!!

Yea, some things may or may or may not qualify as a problem - I'm a really tolerant guy and the only thing that really got to me were the 10 minute acts - but you know what's unmistakably the best part? If galaxytrail is serious about making FP a franchise, analyzing where sonic went wrong and avoiding it....it's only going to get better. Maybe in FP2 the story and characters will reach kung fu panda 2 (critically acclaimed for it's story and characters) levels.

If there was a kickstarter just to get them to explore more things in the story (The culture of avalice, Lilac apparently being hard of hearing without those blue earpieces, the past of the three main characters, Milla's alchemy abilities, Carol and Corazon, and so on), you would find me selling cookies by dya and on the street corner at night trying to see to it that it gets done. (Ok maybe that's a bit overboard but you get my point).

I ADORE FREEDOM PLANET!!!!
After all this talk about the game, I actually gave it a try on my Wii U yesterday (sntached it in a Humble Bundle) and played through the first level. So far I actually feel like this game could be way BETTER than the original Sonic trilogy.

For starters, jumping on enemies feels more accurate and reliable in this game. In the original Sonic games, I always had the problem that some jumps on enemies just made me get hurt instead of them and it wasn't always clear to me why. You also have an attack now, which makes it even easier to actually hit enemies without taking damage yourself.

The viewport is also a little bit bigger than in the classic Sonic games and most enemies also don't deal contact damage anymore. These two facts greatly help reducing problems stemming from "going too fast", which, you know, WAS supposed to be the key feature of the Sonic games. However, I feel that going fast just works way better in Freedom Planet than it did in Sonic games. Cheap hits from going fast are much rarer in Freedom Planet than they were in Sonic games, and even when you do get hit, the penalty isn't that big anymore. You actually have a health bar now and don't lose all your crystals from getting hit, whereas in a Sonic game you would lose all your rings from just a single mistake.

I feel like, overall, Freedom Planet just encourages you way more to go fast, whereas Sonic usually punishes you for going fast and encourages you to take your time, which is of course stupid in a game that WANTS to encourage speed. I'm not even really surprised about this, though. Back when Sonic was originally created, his main purpose was to have a character that could compete with Mario and the only reason they made him fast was because it was so cool. I don't think they really minded the fact that his speed worked totally contrary to the level design. Freedom Planet, on the other hand, could take all the time it needed to actually make this kind of gameplay work and also had the advantage that it could look back at a few decades of video games and learn from them.

Not saying that Sonic games are bad, btw. Just saying that most Sonic games, especially the original trilogy, lack a solid and consequent core concept. I don't even think the original Sonic games are the best 2D Sonic games. I feel like the first Sonic Rush did a much better job at this kind of gameplay. It still has many typical Sonic problems, but at least its Dash move allowed you to occasionally go fast and still not get hurt from enemies.

Talking about the voice acting: I actually kinda love it, as cheesy as it may be here and there. I just wished you could turn up the individual volume of voices since they're way too quiet in the Wii U version. You can only change the overall audio volume, though.
Feel free to visit my website/blog - it's updated rarely, but it looks pretty cool!

Don't forget the cutscenes.

It's really cheesy tho.
On with the topic: WHOA! A new Freedom Planet sequel is announced?! Sweetio! Whazzinit?

The original Freedom Planet was modeled as a tribute to Sega Genesis platform games. We’ve learned what works and what doesn’t, what’s fun and what’s frustrating, what we should expand on and what we can afford to lose. With all of this in mind, we feel that we are ready to bid farewell to nostalgia and create a sequel that will define Freedom Planet’s identity as a franchise.

What's your thoughts?

I don't know. I tend not to get hyped over just the mere announcement of a game when you don't even see anything from that game yet. Additionally, I haven't really played the first game far enough to know whether I'd want a sequel in the first place or not.

2 years of freedom!

Yup, I know what it means 'cause it's July 21st (it's July 22nd--a few days later to that! :P). You know, it had been 2 years since Freedom Planet was launched.

And ICYEN, I found this one on Know Your Meme:

And this is one of the most memorable quotes in this game:

Well, I'd be completely darned that it's been one year since I've put up this thread, but recently, GalaxyTrail just posted an update to Freedom Planet 2 showing more gameplay stuff. I know that these guys have so hard, even they're pushing it for the release, which is scheduled for 2018. Oh, the game is also listed on Steam store right now.

EDIT: Speaking of the sequel, there is now a Japanese language option for FP1 that's still in the works! All the texts have been translated, but only stuff remained here are the voice lines. ここにいくつかの進歩があります!

Recently, GalaxyTrail just posted on Freedom Planet's Facebook page about the Nintendo Switch port for FP1 and FP2.

About our previous post: We want everyone to know they we’ve heard you loud and clear about the Switch. (We’ve now counted literally thousands of requests sent to us!) We’re currently exploring all of our options to offer you the game and the sequel on the Switch. The best we could give you so far was a silly pun though. 🙁

On the subject there is nothing to announce at this time, but we’ll definitely let everyone know as soon as there is.

Stay tuned for more news about ports, while our programmers work diligently to bring you FP2, we’re still working to offer you the game you love on every platform we can, even toasters if we can manage it! (Those have screens now right?)

EDIT: Also, Freedom Planet 2 is slated for the release on Spring/Summer 2019. Good push?
