SMWC Idol 9 - Rules & Discussion

Link Thread Closed

Music

Since everyone length is at least 4, that's literally the same thing as setting EVOL[LR] = MVOL[LR] * feedback/0x80 (or 0x7f?). It's still just as much echo, just less controllable. Everything gets sent through fir at least once, and if feedback is zero, no extra echo is audible.
If you set feedback to zero, the echo will basically be the main sound output except delayed by x * 8 ms (where x is the echo delay). Literally an echo!

Or if you don't like large samples you could just use a huuuge sample of silence and use wavetables for the others haha. But imo the point of the challenge is to be creative and make the most of these restrictions.
Make more of less, that way you won't make less of more!

Thought of doing that but wasting 16kb feels pretty awful. However it'd be worthwhile if the composition was similar to 4'33" or Funeral March for the Obsequies of a Deaf Man. The sample could be the best thing since sliced bread!
Just want to quickly note that I'm pushing the deadline forward by 4 hours because of bad planning on my part ending it while I'll be at work. It's not much, but maybe it'll be helpful to somebody. This new time (4PM PT/7PM ET) will take effect for all future rounds.

Wow, where did the time go.

Well I don't have anything to show for the first round. It took me a while to come up with a good idea, I did come up with a good idea eventually. Making something in the style of electro-swing, but it's too late now.

Oh well, there's still more rounds to go.
I gotta say, whoever did the Final Hours port from Majora's Mask: props to you.

Better to have a late initiative blowing away the competition.

I would be surprised if it was NOT musicalman. Well there are many great people here but that's the one I know off the top of my head. Could probably "accurately"guess 3 more of the round songs.
just a quick note: if ur concerned that ur formatting is slightly off, im going thru and fixing any minor errors. because thats easier than fixing the actual script L O L

(and if theres any concern of me INTERFERING mods can confirm there is not)

Congrats to nobody1089 for that huge 1st place lead!

Here are some of my personal comments on all the entries.

Let's keep the ball rolling with round 2...

ROUND 2 CHALLENGE

The Choosing Of The Challenge

Make a port or composition using all of: pitch modulation, FIR filtering (i.e. not just $7f$00$00$...), surround sound, and noise.
There are no hard rules on how long they have to be active; whether you've used them sufficiently will be up to the voters.

Reminder: You're still free to submit new challenges, if you haven't already, for future rounds!

Round 2 is due Tuesday. June 12th at 16:00 PT / 19:00 ET!

Ironic how a "nobody" numbered 1089 stole the show. Sarcasm aside (good job lol) congrats to everyone who submitted. Round 2 allows more freedom and since they know their audience [and competition] we're likely going to have more virtuous entries.

As a side note I enjoyed the following example... or meme if you will.

Yeah, I'm definitely excited to see what people come up with for this round.

As a side note, one thing I want to clarify: the surround sound part of this requirement can be either on channel volume or echo volume, or both.

Could have totally used N64 samples, idk why you didn't.

Technically, yes... if it wasn't for Idol. I didn't want to risk wasting time on finding a bunch of needles (right samples) in a haystack (K64's soundfont) only for them to not fit in ARAM in the end. Consider that the round challenge literally was to work with limited ARAM (one 16+ kB sample and 0x04+ echo delay). Maybe they'd fit if I cut them in size and downsampled but that'd be extra time wasted on sample work and also extra risk using low quality samples where the SNES Kirby games already had good enough samples to work with.

...Also, retro covers are fun. #wario{:peace:}

main complaint is some of the staccatos might be a bit too much.

Yeah, I had a feeling something was off and I think you nailed what it was. Which sections you think had overdone staccatos though? You can tell me when Idol is over if you want, since we're "opponents" I guess, lol.

i think there might be a couple off notes too

Very unlikely, since I used a ripped midi.
For those of us who don't want to bother setting up an SCP player, any chance somebody could record .mp3 or .wav files for all the songs?

Of course, if not, I'll just have to figure out how to play them on my own. I guess that's always a possibility, but I won't be able to do it right away.
You can record directly to SPC.
In SNES SPC700 Player go to File > Save
Save as WAVE Sound, Click Save
If asks click Yes
Saved.

If you're going to convert to mp3, get any software such Audacity or LAME command-based CMD

Which, I realize, is selfish of me, but that is exactly what I'd like.

I'll probably wind up installing a player on my own anyways, but not yet.
Unfortunately taking a backseat ticket on this "easy" entry. However it also means being able to vote so that's going to be fun. FIR Filter coefficients are easy to come across but here are some of my old ones if anyone wants a lick and has yet to make up their mind.
Code
$F5 $50 $C9 $FE $18 $0d $F6 $2A $d6 ; Tone Filter, requires low edl, may mess up panning (features waveform phase shifting)

$F5 $20 $10 $20 $F4 $18 $08 $FC $F8 ; Stereo Filter for non-surround echo. Not very useful...?

$F5 $10 $0F $0F $0F $0F $0F $0F $0F ; Low Pass Filter. Stronger than SMW's/NSPC "Lowpass" filter.

$F5 $28 $18 $10 $14 $04 $F4 $F8 $FE ; Crude Hall, maybe just a lowpass.

$F5 $18 $16 $10 $0F $08 $18 $F8 $FF ; Improved Hall filter, smooth.

We should [eventually] make a table of commonly used/official filters, e.g. FIR 34 33 00 d9 E5 01 FC Eb (pretty sure this might be a high pass.)
hi all. idol is being postponed until further notice--my new computer died and im dealing with a lot of frustration and stress due to that and as a result have zero motivation currently. the deadline for round 2 is still the same, however i will be slightly more lenient since voting won't start until im out of hell. just dont be like a whole day late or something.

when i have any further updates i'll post asap
