It’s that time again. If you weren’t already aware, SMWC Idol is a SMW music-based competition held across multiple rounds, generally tournament-style. However, this year, we’re going a bit closer to the contest’s roots. For Idol 9, we will be following a similar structure to Idol 2 -- there will be several rounds, across which ANYONE can enter ANY round. The final winner will be determined by overall performance across all rounds. Some key differences between Idol 2 and Idol 9, though:

1. Public voting makes its return. In Idol 2, there were judges, but public voting is too much fun to let that happen again. There is a major difference though--voting will be scored out of 10, not just ordered. This will make the scoring process significantly more fair.
2. The rounds will actually be organized. Every round will last 10 days, and voting will last the next 4, to complete a two week cycle each round, for a total of 7 rounds. If a round is composition based, the entry period will be extended by one week.
3. Unlike Idol 2, the challenges will not all be available from the start, and you’ll soon understand why. They will be made available at the start of each round, as with recent Idols.
4. I WILL NOT BE MAKING THE CHALLENGES. You will! That’s right--this year’s challenges will be created by the public. This post serves as a guideline date for challenge submissions. Think up some challenges you think could work (maximum 3 per person), and send them to me in PM or over Discord (tag is in my profile). At the time of each round, I’ll pull a challenge from a hat, and that’ll be the challenge for that round. Now of course there are some formalities: If I deem your challenge unfit for the competition, I will silently remove it from play before any drawing happens. Similarly, if there are challenges too similar to a challenge already drawn, they will be removed at the appropriate time.

You might notice something a bit special that is now possible--since I won’t know the challenges in advance...I may choose to enter alongside you all : )

Here are the official rules (lazily copypasted + modified from Idol 7):

1. Entries should be sent to me via PM on this site, or on Discord in DM (again, tag is in my profile). They must be in a compressed archive (zip, rar, 7z or whatever), containing the text file of your music, the SPC and all the additional samples that were used, if any.
2. Your entry must work with the latest AddmusicK. The beta is allowed--if you use it, please specify as such either when you send it to me or in the source file itself. (not necessary if you use #amk 3)
3. You may not share your piece of music, or identify yourself as the creator, until the results have been posted for that round.
4. You must follow the limitations given to you as the challenge for the current round.
5. NO EXTENSIONS WHATSOEVER. This will not change no matter how much you push, barring the special exception for composition rounds. If you’re late, suck it up.
6. No automatic porting programs. This means no NintSPC, CapSPC, SPCtoMML V1000, etc. Note that MIDI conversion programs are exempt from this rule (this means you're allowed to use TinyMM/PetiteMM/etc).
7. Breaking any of the rules will result in disqualification from the round.

There are NO SIGNUPS, because after several years of this I’ve realized it’s kind of pointless. Plus it doesn’t fit this format anyway.

And finally, scoring will work as follows. Voters will give each entry a score out of 10. At the end of each round, each entry will be given a score per vote normalized based on the average score of the voter. These scores will be totaled up across all voters and averaged for a final score out of 100 for the round.

Challenges are due by the time Round 1 begins on May 19, at noon PT / 15:00 ET (that’s one week). Get ready, and have fun!

(If you have any questions, feel free to ask, preferably here where everyone can see, or PM me on Discord. I'll try to get to any I see.)

Edit: Apologies for some initial formatting issues. I had this written in a Google doc and the numbering didn't copy over.

UPDATE 7 JULY: See THIS POST for a few significant rule updates going forward. Primarily, rounds are now two weeks, there are 24 hours after the deadline with penalty to submit late, and voting lasts six days, as well as there being 8 rounds instead of 7.
Idols? Sign me the fuck up.

I'm really interested in doing this as well but I was expecting this to be like the Idol 7 and 8 formats, so I'm a little confused.

How do you enter a round? And is it possible, say, to not enter round 1 but enter round 2 or something like that? I take it there are no real sign-ups or anything, you just enter in the rounds you want?

How is the winner determined by performance? I would guess in order to have the best chance of winning you would have to participate in all rounds?

Sorry for all the questions!
Make more of less, that way you won't make less of more!
oh cool, Idol

time to get last place again because of more experienced musicians getting the better of me like in all the other Idols I participated in >:]

well hey, at least I won't be immediately DQed this time, so that's something at least ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

musicalman:

1. Entering a round is the same process as any other Idol--you send me your song & source before the deadline.

2. Yes, anyone can enter any round; you do not have to enter round 1 to enter round 2.

3. The winner will be the one with the highest overall score (sum of all round scores). So yes, entering more rounds will put you at a higher chance of winning, though I don't necessarily expect anyone to enter all 7 rounds. I've also been tossing the idea of minor round winner trophies around, as a bit more incentive to enter even if you can only enter one round.

Hope that answers your questions!

Oh, there are 7 rounds? Wow! Just reread the first post and saw that, I must have missed it. Yeah my head will fall off if I attempt all of those. I would if I could though :). I am going to be busy for a while and may not be able to put as much time as I'd like into this, which is a shame because I've been looking forward to this for over a year. Ah well, if participation in a round is just a matter of making a port and PMing it, then it seems like that would take pressure off, particularly since I don't care as much about winning as I used to. Lol. I'm just gonna have fun with this one and do what I can.

i just want to point out that a LOT of challenge submissions so far are including unsampled as a requirement--i suggest not doing that in any further ones otherwise we'll end up with a very unhealthy balance haha.

i also want to note that your challenges don't have to be complex or fancy! simple challenges are perfectly good too

I was joking actually lol; at least now I feel like I actually have a legitimate chance of getting far this time, tho I still feel that I may get a bit overwhelmed at some point #smw{^_^;}

Get ready to be spammed with most of the same thing.
And so, the CLDC threads get left to bite the dust. The end.

Anyway, I believe this is the first time I'll get to see an Idol in action. Since I can't compose SPCs if my life depended on it, I'll await the compositions others compose instead. Good luck, entrants!
What is a Lunar Magic, and can I eat it?
I most likely won't be entering, but I could suggest some round ideas.

----------------

I'm working on a hack! Check it out here. Progress: 64/95 levels.
Some challenges was changed.

The ability code execute the txt files.

For example. If you use a Script to generate samples.

Lol fake ARAM
Being able to pop in/out of rounds is nice. Hopefully the challenges aren't too specific/restricting. Really I just think it'd be unfortunate if we had a lot of "make/port a song using only [Insert Name] samples."
At least, IMO, it's somewhat boring since they all generally mesh together minus the one or two people that can make their music shine.

Either or there is definitely a certain someone I look forward to listening to.
