Super Luigi Land - 2...

Standard

I like the gimmick for Walnut Woods 4, though Tob has a point; there's more you could do with it. Walnut Woods 5 also looks pretty nice. Walnut Woods 6 seems neat, though you could probably make the Munchers giant-sized if you wanted, and it looks weird for the player to go down one side of the giant pipe rather than the middle. I think there are some custom pipe blocks that might work? I like the idea behind the tree fortress, too. I like Walnut Ruins, but I'm a sucker for forest ruins levels. Walnut Woods 7 isn't bad either. (Isn't this the second bug-based forest level you've done in a hack?) The castle is nice, though the boss seems like it could be nasty depending on where it starts out and the range of its projectiles.

Cola Cavern 1 is okay, though I forget if I've seen Cola Ruins before in its other form. (Incidentally, someone really needs to make a better ceiling Buzzy sprite.) Cola Secret 2 seems good (and I hardly ever see the Flutter sprite used in hacks), but I would swap the palettes of the mushroom platforms, since the green ones match those in vanilla SMW. I like Cola Cavern 2, too, and your overworld is nice. Cola Cavern 3 has some pretty nice aesthetics (at least, for choconilla) and design, though it looks long enough to have a second checkpoint. Also, why do the second and fourth sections only have a Layer 3 background? And why doesn't the player actually come out of a pipe in the last room? I really like the purple gradient in Cola Cavern 4, and I think the silhouette background actually adds to the atmosphere, though I wouldn't say no to all the colors in the background just being various shades of really dark instead.

In Cola Cavern 3, those sections that have a Layer 3 background are using Layer 2 for the water. This allows there to be Throw Blocks in the water without creating cutoff when they're picked up. As for the missing pipe at the end of the level, that was just something I forgot to put in before recording the video, but put in afterwards.

I'd say it's about time I stopped procrastinating on this. I finally got back to work on it last night.

COLA CAVERN 5

This level focuses on the ant enemies from SML2, which means I was kinda motivated by real life since we have a problem with ants in the kitchen. At least they're not this big though.

The ants in the kitchen also don't carry bazookas on their heads.

Kind of a narrow passage here.

Another thing you're probably glad real ants don't do

TRIPLE POST!

Here's Cola Cavern 6!

Lots of bricks around here...

If you haven't figured it out yet, this level is a throwback to SMB1. The brick blocks can be broken the way any old-school brick block can.

SMB1-style vertically-wrapping platforms
Thanks to Mandew for making these.

Cola Cavern 5 looks pretty decent. (I really ought to update that music at some point...) Cola Cavern 6 does look like it could be in SMB1, aside from the length and the SMW-specific stuff. I had made some constantly-spawning platforms, but I don't think I ever released them. I'm glad to see you getting back to this.

It looks good. Maybe your bonus area wants some coins, so when you get the p-switch you have some bricks to reach them all?

edit: N/M You have wall jump and luigi physics.
COLA CAVERN 7 (These Worlds are HUGE!)

This cave is full of pipes, but there's no pipe maze.

Where there are pipes, there are plenty of plant-type enemies.

The fire-spitting Nipper makes this route a little more dangerous, but it'll end up being more rewarding if you find a Silver P-Switch.

Looks pretty neat, I only think the background pipes still blend with the foreground a little too much. It might be different when playing in-game, but otherwise I suggest darkening them a little more. The level also seems a little on the short side. World 4? Okay, if the rest of the levels are equally short, it's fine. Good use of sprites though. Looking forward to this, so keep it up Gamma V.
I play different games on Twitch, I did speedruns of Pokemon Red and Gold, Mario Party 4, but I also do SMW stuff.

Thanks, Kamekku.

After a bit of a hiatus, I'm back to work on this. I even streamed myself working on the latest level.

COLA FORTRESS

This level continues the pipe theme from Cola Cavern 7.

Better be careful when you jump here.

The second room is a bit of a throwback to World 7 from Super Mario Bros. 3.

Twitch VOD
Some parts might be muted due to copyright shenanigans involving background music. I guess that shouldn't bother you if you don't like artists like Daft Punk or the Spice Girls. Yes, I listen to them. I'm a 34-year-old woman. That music is nostalgic.

Interesting style as ever, Gamma V. The pipe fortress design is quite neat for me. But... I have two questions regarding the last screenshot:

1) That 16x32 'switch' block... it's an elevator, isn't it? I was a bit thrown back, because I could confound it with an actual yellow switch block (sue me.).

2) I'm note sure if my past sight problems are catching up with me again, but I kinda have a bit of difficulty in differing the FG pipes from the BG ones. I'm saying this because, even though you consider darkening them a bit more to counter this nitpick of mine (and other potential sight impaired players), I fear the colors may not be as pleasing as they can be. My real concern here, though, is the muncher placement above the horizontal pipe: do you see a small gap between the munchers and the pipe? That can be considered, if you squint your eyes enough, as a case of floating omnomnoms. Just a small nitpick.

Dream team (feed them, please):

Lol grandma

That tileset looks a bit bland the way it's set up right now. Aside from that it looks good, design-wise.
@Gregor: Yeah. I should probably have more gray hair than I do.

Anyway, I finished up Cola Cavern 8 on my Twitch stream just moments ago. Here are the screens.

This level revolves around Turn Block shenanigans.

There are a LOT of Chucks in here to smash through Turn Block walls.

Things are heating up now, especially with those Hammer Bros. hanging around.

Remember. Shells can collect coins and A-Coins.

Cola Ruins 8 looks good. I love the animated lava falls in the background.

Keep it up!

Okay, Gamma V. Judging from all of the photos that you have posted on the Cola Ruins 8 level, they look very good.

Photo 1 - Loved the turn block shenanigans with the buzzy beetles. Whenever you try to activate the blocks to turn, it turns out that the beetles burst out of it.

Photo 2 - Charging Chucks through turning blocks are amazing obstacles and are useful enemies to try to defeat. Remember, too many chucks MIGHT cause the level to lag.

Photo 3 - Good job with the expanding block over the lava. I honestly think the hammer bro should be a great fit. Question is, does it drop down onto the lower row of turn blocks? If not, try placing the hammer bro on that row of turn blocks.

Photo 4 - This is an excellent idea with the comment posted under the photo about the shells collecting A-coins. I haven't really realized the entire thread until now, so that's a great idea making the shells fly across the level to grab A-coins. It might reflect on how well gameplay can be.

Keep it up, Gamma V!
Thanks, JetWing.

Moving on...

COLA GHOST HOUSE

This level features the Horizontal Level Wrap gimmick, meaning that, if you fall into a pit, you'll fall through the ceiling to the nearest platform. I decided that the backstory would be that this gimmick is the result of SCIENCE, so I used my Abandoned Lab tileset.

Mayhaps a P-Switch lurks nigh.

More switch shenanigans.

COLA CAVERN 9

These rocky wall blocks can be destroyed with Bob-Omb explosions.

Sometimes, this is the only way to progress through the level. Fortunately, Bob-Omb-spawning pipes are always nearby.

There must be something good on that lower route if I needed a Green Switch and an explosion to take it.

Bomb Bros. are also happy to supply you with Bob-Ombs, whether you want them or not.

I'm considering live-streaming all future level-building sessions. I streamed this one, but it wasn't all done in one stream, and the first part was tacked on to the end of a Seiken Densetsu 3 session.
