The (un)official insanely-obscure VGM thread

I'm sure just about everyone here can name a handful of songs they've encountered and loved that are just too obscure. As in like, "the-most-viewed-youtube-video-of-this-has-less-than-a-thousand-views" obscure. Let's be real here: there's so much music in the world that just too many deserving soundtracks slip right under the rug and lose the recognition they may deserve.

So why don't we make a kind of repository for great music that never got any attention? Here's the plan: post a link/name of an album/track, optionally say a thing or two about it to enlighten us ignorant heathens who are unaware of such a grand song, and I'll edit them into a list here of everything collected (probably at the top of this post).

Note that while this is (mostly) directed at video game music, if you know of some amazing non-VGM song that no one's ever heard of then that's fine to mention as well.

The more unknown, the more interesting.

Anyway, here are my picks:

Famicom Tantei Club II - pretty much forgotten SNES game with some sweet tracks like this. I recall learning of this years ago from Xkeeper back on Acmlm's Board.

Melody Muncher (among others from OCRecords) - It really kind of surprises me how OverClocked is such a popular website for music and yet the soundtracks featured in their own featured OSTs section never seem to get any love. The composer (DDRKirby) is a fantastic chiptune artist and really any of his work is worth a listen.

As for a non-VGM bonus, "Free" by the group Makr - It's actually a complete accident that I found this, to be honest (Shazam misinterpreted a completely unrelated song I ran through it and gave me this). The link here is the most viewed video of the song on Youtube, and it has 11 views; almost all of which are myself (the only like is mine as well). It's a very dark and atmospheric song, and after checking out the rest of this hidden band's work, so is most of their other work. If you're a big fan of ambiance, definitely give this specific song a listen - it's still by far my favorite.

welp, to fulfill my promise, here's a obscure VGM game's soundtrack that I have been listening to a lot these past few days

that is YU-NO's OST, and my god, it's absolutely fucking great man, holy shit. Movement 1 and Sudden Change especially are the ones I listen to the most, tho all of the other tracks are pretty much 🔥; this is it's most famous video IIRC, but I still think it counts since the game is damn obscure still

and here's a playlist I'm building up of recordings that no one has made yet for some odd reason (you may recognize the first one as a tcdw port, and that port was pretty much the main inspiration I had to post the original version of that song on to YT lmao)

would post more, but I think I'll do it later

Have you guys listened to the soundtracks of some obscure PC-98 games, like this Rusty OST? This sounds more Castlevania-ish, IMO.

Puzzle Bobble 2 – Monsta's Theme

This was one of those games not many people had in the US because of one of the creepiest children's games covers of all time. Just look at this horse shit compared to the JP version:

I got the game anyway apparently LMAO

Oh shoot! Same with the Phalanx thing happened before. PogChamp

Anyways, have some Mischief Makers OST for size.

Also, Little Samson OST, Gun*Nac OST and Totally Rad OST.

R-Type III - Acid Creature
One of my favorite tracks from R-Type III soundtrack. I feel like the soundtrack should've gotten more exposure than it did.

Wordmaster OST - Music 3 and Music 5 both have less than 40 views currently. Though I guess it's a bit cheaty since I uploaded it myself two years ago. I don't really consider it an amazing OST (in fact, I didn't even want to post it here), but it's all right I guess. It can easily get repetitive, even if the melody is nice.

That's because all the songs in the game (except for the main and bonus songs) have three parts to them, an intro which is repeated twice, the main section which is repeated four times and the outro which is only played once. I'm sure you can notice the various points where it repeats.

Music 1 is the one I like the most, but it has 85 views.

54 views. I'd like to see someone try and top this #smrpg{:P}

All right, two can play at this game:

Asameshimae Nyanko - Forest - only 41 views, and one of them was me just now going to grab the link. That's the most viewed song from this game too!

I will admit though, I'm jamming out to yours

On a side note, I've been going through the RSN archive on snesmusic.org and it blows my mind how much super awesome stuff is there that seemingly no one cares about. Just try and say with a straight face this doesn't sound like something right out of Final Fantasy.

not linking the absolute best theme from HGB, smh; Some Mysteries Still Remain is damn cool tho, and also some shout-outs to HGB's battle themes because they are damn good too

also, as an extra, here's another obscure soundtrack by Sakimoto because why not; this wasn't made by just Sakimoto tho, but it's from the same team who made Verytex's soundtrack (A.K.A this one), so you're bound to find some bangers here too lol

Super Hang-On (Arcade) - Winning Run

Super Hang-On (Arcade) - Outride a Crisis

now, I know that this game isn't exactly that obscure compared to some other stuff out there, but IMO it's still a pretty hidden gem by Sega that should have more recognition

then again, Outride a Crisis did appear in I think all of the Sonic Riders games, but not that many people care about Sonic Riders anyway, so I think it's fine to post these here

Ever17 - IBF Notfall, one of the coolest BGM's I've heard. PC, Xbox and PSP versions are all slightly different from one another, I would to compensate for the different sound engines, but I wouldn't know how that stuff works. Still, I just have to wonder why have differing versions from one system to another.
The soundtrack to the unreleased game Time Trax is pretty badass. Tim Follin is always awesome when it comes to making soundtracks for video games. Shame that this is the only Genesis game he worked on, it would've been great if he stuck around for more.

Brain Lord OST - Site of Civilization
On of my favorite tracks from another obscure(?) SNES game.

I was also wondering what you all would count as obscure, just for future reference.

The Sega Genesis version of the Bubba 'N' Stix has kickin' tunes. It's soundtrack is a gem and deserves WAY more love than it gets.

In particular:
- Alien Forest
- Menu Theme
- The Volcano
- Waldo's Starship
- Marine Temple

There isn't any set definition I'm gonna hold you to, but what I had in mind was pretty much anything that's obscure enough to the point where even a real enthusiast in music isn't likely to recognize. I personally look for less than a couple thousand views on Youtube, but I guess it's really up to you to decide what that means.

Also hell yeah @ Ever17 Skewer, the Infinity games have wonderful music. I love Never7's tracks as well, especially this one and this one.

Dragon Knight 4 is a bretty damn gud OST honestly, and I'd imagine that most of the other versions are also pretty great (there's a SNES, a PC-98, a X68000, a MS-DOS, a Saturn, and a Playstation version of it; only listened to the SNES and X68000 versions tho, since I found this OST VERY recently lol), however I do think the X68000 version is definitely a step-up in a lot of stuff I heard, even in most other FM game soundtracks; the SNES version is not bad tho (in fact, it's not bad at all for a SNES OST), but it does feel VERY underwhelming when compared to the X68000 version; if you want to listen to it as well tho, here is a playlist

oh yeah, btw, it's made by Elf, and since they mostly make eroges, well, you might be able to guess what this game's genre is LOL

also tfw wasted opportunity for a 1337 post thread
