Featured Hacks - Nominations and Discussion

Link Thread Closed
Being a fervent speedrunner of Tsunami Island, I can tell that the difficult sections are not nearly as bad as some other hacks on the list. But that's just me I think. The exploring is really quite nifty.
It didn't tick me off that much either and I also used to play it a lot back in the day, but it's something to be considered depending on the difficulty.

So it's featured!

Woo!
After replaying this hack after about half a year, I´d like to bring up the discussion to feature Kruela Mario.

First of all: No, it isn´t perfect, but it´s a very well made hack.

Pros:
- It has a great difficulty curve, that increases from world to world. I barely know any other hack, that is so consistent with this.

- The level design is very tricky and sometimes quite obscure, though in most cases (except in last world perhaps), the levels are relatively short, so it´s definitely possible to solve the puzzles. The last world on the other hand, had longer, but more linear levels, which made them quite exhausting, but also the more satisfying to beat them.

- The visuals and the music are usually very decent, too and for keeping vanilla gfx-wise, the hack still didn´t fail, to create a neat atmosphere with custom palettes and ambient music.

- I´d also like to note, that the hack had 3 prior versions, but they weren´t accepted here, because the author was told, to remaster some parts and he really did his best, to listen to the feedback and improve the levels as much as possible.

So overall i´d say this is a really outstanding Kaizo: Hard hack, especially if you consider, how difficult it is to design fair glitch-puzzle-levels. From my side, it gets a definite yes!

Can i just say i'm actually happy about the whole reset regarding the old featured hacks. Alot of them were good for its time, but this reset makes way for new hacks, especiall with new tools and stuff. I downloaded one and I hope to see another hack hop on board!
Kruela Mario got a fair amount of discussion on discord and got quite a few featured votes so it's featured!

Also gonna use this post to nominate stick mice in my head and then beat my head in with a hammer and let them back out. Weird name definitely, sorta janky and with a sizeable difficulty spike near the end, but it's got some good puzzle gameplay and probably the best use of LX5's powerups patch that I'll see for a while.
how no one nominated Sicari Remastered yet is beyond me.

The hack has plenty of good reviews (including mine), and you can insantly see by the screenshots and storyline how much love and effort was put into it. Levels are overall great, and the exclusive resources are pretty unique (I also did ASM for this hack but aside from that my point still stands). If anyone is looking for a complete, polished hack in all aspects, as well as a non-Mario character experience, I strongly recommend it.

Yeah, there's actually quite a few hacks made by staff that haven't been nominated actually-

the whole reason they're not being nominated is, as I was told by others, "I'm a friend of the creator, thus it will look like circle jerking."

Seriously, how come we have to wait for nominations, especially when this thread, featured hacks, and nominations are all dead as a whole. I've suggested a lot, and a long time ago that staff should be the one to decide these things because nobody else cares.

This is a downside, but I don't think we should ditch that idea entirely, at least not for now. Nominations and comments come with time.

Sicari Remastered is now up for discussion.
Giving my two cents, I definitely support it. It's a hack that shapes up really nicely, and the plot is well made all around. I strongly recommend it for those who like story-based hacks.

Even though i havent played any of the hacks in its entirity, i would agree with both nominations

"stick mice in my head and then beat my head in with a hammer and let them back out"
is a very creative and unique hack.. and specially for the given context / time span it was created its really a thing to behold.. a true source of inspiration.

"Sicari Remastered"
must be the most beautiful hack ive ever seen.
Both hacks NaroGugul said are hacks Ill support nomination for featuring because both of em had hard work put into making a quality product with a unique identity to em (one being creative showcase use of C3 resources, the other having entirely original art and setting), as well as being fun to play.
Modern Redrawn Mario Bros. 1.5 (last update - February 14, 2023, some new bonus frames, tons of minor touchups to various poses)

On Pixel Art Requests: Depends on what it is and if I have the time for it. If its complex and I don't have the time, don't expect me to accept it.

Projects I support:

I support featuring Sicari Remastered, it's a very good hack with original plot and graphics.
Two more hacks up to be discussed:
A Strange Mission is a very old hack, but it's still a blast to play. Might contain some difficult segments if you don't know what to do (like the anti-coin segments), but that doesn't detract from the experience. Definitely recommend it for featuring and I think we can all agree on that.
Hack 4 has its own really unique gimmicks. Couldn't find all dragon coins so I didn't finish it fully, but it's a small hack I think is worth featuring due to the fun factor.

Also Sicari Remastered has been featured!

im a bit mixed on this. i feel its a pretty messy hack all around compared to the other featured hacks (it's less polished, for one), but i do admit it is pretty impressive what we managed to do in around two weeks with mostly not working resources lol

hack 4 and a strange mission are okay. i dont know if i'd vie for featuring either of them, but i guess others can weigh in.
I cannot believe I haven't played A Strange Mission up until now. #smrpg{gasp}

The hack has neat gimmicks for all levels and most of them are being developed very nice within them. In my opinion the hack is very impressive, especially for the time at which it came out. I'd definetly support a Feature for it because it's one of the hidden gems from a few years ago.
Hack 4 on the other hand doesnt seem too impressive in contrast to its prequels. Then again I only watched videos of it and didnt play it myself so that opinion might change when I ever decide to play it myself.

As part of the team that worked on it, I'm gonna vote against mice. It was only an exercise in making a hack in a short amount of time and was never meant to be a very polished/outstanding hack. While I think it turned out good for what it is, it's not nearly as impressive as other hacks that had more time & effort put into them. I'd rather have our upcoming serious hack be featured instead because that one better represents our skills. (for the record, the rest of the team seems to agree)
So... uh, people still remember A Strange Mission, nice. It was one of my favorite hacks and still is, because it has very unique gimmicks and levels. Even if WYE thought the hack was overrated (don't know if he still thinks that) the hack is worth to play. So I'm in favor of it being featured.

About mice, the same you guys said, even if the hack is decent it isn't polished enough (I remember Big Brawler pointed out several non-minor bugs) and it clearly don't show the real potential of what the JUMP team could actually do. About Hack 4, can't say anything, haven't played it (yet)

Just want to point out that other hacks existing by the same author(s) don't matter when determining whether something should be featured. Unless you're trying to nominate a group of related old hacks at the same time (see the kaizo mario series), hacks should be considered in a vacuum.

---------------

A Strange Mission was unanimously approved, it's featured.

Hack 4 didn't really get much discussion. Katerpie liked it and I liked it and nobody else who commented on it had actually played it so I guess that's featured.

mice got more feature votes than reject (not counting the "rest of the team" bit in Lazy's post; if you want your vote to count you have to actually vote), but in my opinion the reject votes did a better job of explaining why. Lack of polish is a very good reason to reject, even though I still think it's very fun. It's declined.
The next hack up for discussion is Touhou Mario: Imperishable Night.

Quite simply put, the lack of a save feature is already a huge negative. Combine that with the hack's difficulty, length, and an energy system that encourages you to plow through everything and then punishes you with permadeath, and it's a death knell. The level design in the hack is pretty cheap at times (the on/off level comes to mind), and even if it wasn't it just wouldn't be enough to make me want to feature.

And then this happened:

This is a pretty solid decline from me.
