Super Mario Odyssey

What do you guys think about Super Mario Odyssey right now? I for one think it looks great and the gameplay isn't too bad either. I just hope that there will be a more interesting plot to it. I also love how well the game looks. It even has every hair snippit in mario's mustache animated. So what do you guys think? Will it be bad or good? Will it boost the switch sales further?
Wubba lubba dub dub.
The game looks really great.
And it seems like it's open-world-ish.
Which is really nice, I wonder how they will use this open-world, will all the worlds be connected in a way?

It doesn't seem like there's any kind of hub world, so maybe it's like the exploration in the N64 Zelda games?

Who knows? I always keep wondering.
But at the end, I just know I will really like this game.

And I believe it will be another killer app for the Switch, not only it's a big Mario title after years (the last time there was a really big Mario title, it was really Galaxy and Galaxy 2, but even, only the first Galaxy had that big impact, Galaxy 2 was just extra fun for the people who wanted more).

It seems like Nintendo is doing a lot of new and old cool stuff.
Playing differently with things, but also playing with nostalgia here and there.

As Super Mario Odyssey is like a throwback to SM64 and Sunshine, but also looking new and fresh, and very different than usual Mario games.

Kinda like how Breath of the Wild is a different Zelda that also uses a some ideas from old games, like Zelda 1, Wind Waker and Four Swords.

TL;DR - The game looks promising, I'm sure it will sell like crazy.

I'm hyped. I always like it when Mario has new, unique worlds unlike the the NSMB series. The ones shown in the game look incredibly out of place, which isn't a bad thing.

I have no doubt the game is going to be amazing. It might even rival Mario Galaxy. The only thing I don't like so far is the trailer music, the Mario Galaxy orchestra is gonna be hard to top.

I've read some rumors about the game's content being pretty much finalized and is even ready to be released. Nintendo is just holding it back for a holiday release to maximize sales, while other major titles fill in for the rest of the year. Smart move, but damn it is just making us wait longer.
doesn't seem to be your typical grassland-desert-ice-jungle-water-mountain-sky-lava Mario game so that's already a good start

I also am already liking the hat-platform thing and Bowser being a pimp
I've really disliked the direction 3D Mario has taken after Sunshine. Galaxy still had some exploration levels, but Galaxy 2 and 3D World pretty much ditched the concept altogether in favor of a higher number of more shallow levels.

I'm super excited for this one now that 3D Mario is returning to its roots. It's the main reason I want to get a Switch in November.
I have no interest in it; I don't like open-world games. Good news for people who do, but I hope it's not the only Mario platformer that the Switch ends up getting.

I'm working on a hack! Check it out here. Progress: 64/95 levels.
I'll say that I don't mind linear Mario games, but I prefer to keep the 2D and 3D series distinct so that they can both offer different things rather than just being the same gameplay style.

I also hope to see a new 2D-style Mario game on the platform. Hopefully something different from yet another NSMB incarnation as all of the games look the same and just kind of blend together.

I would agree here. I mean, I like the NSMB games, and I still think they've gotten stale (though some of the fangames, such as Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii, were good).

I actually like the idea of an open-world Mario game, but the art style really turns me off.
*everything stops*
Yeah, that's me. You're probably wondering how I got into this situation...

Bumping this thread back to the top since the game is coming out in 10 days and a lot of new stuff has been posted since then.

My question to you people is: Do you think this game will get leaked sooner then expected? Examples for this are Sonic Mania, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and Bowser's Minions, and South Park: The Fractured But Whole. These games got leaked by different websites days or weeks before release, and I think this will happen to Super Mario Odyssey too. What are your thoughts?

also I wish I had a switch so I could actually play this game since it looks so fucking amazing #wario{:'(}

There was an article about exactly this from yesterday. Link.

Nintendo is cutting down review codes being sent out to smaller publishers because of the MLSS remake leak.

On the bright side: Less chances of a major spoiler leaking for Odyssey before the game is released.
On the downside: Not as many reviews and opinions will be out for the game at launch. Most smaller publishers and content creators are gonna suffer because of this. RIP.

Turns out I was right after all. The game got leaked today, as expected.
Yeah, seems like a few retailers broke street date, namely in Portugal. I cannot confirm this either but someone in the 1up world discord said that some copies were stolen from a GameStop??? I haven't seen any article report this.

There was also an apparent rogue reviewer leaking screenshots on 4chan that break embargo, was apparently from a digital download of which only the press should have access to at the moment.

Guess the new policy didn't help much with leaking information of the game, not like it's out of Nintendo's control.

Haven't heard anything about a GameStop debacle. Also, the rogue reviewer who kept taking screenshots was someone who took screenshots of the actual person streaming the game. The streamer is still playing it and has beaten the final boss, but he's still very far from 100%ing the game.
It's out everywhere now! (except for poor South Korea and Taiwan #tb{D:})

The reviews are insane. Always a 5/5, 9/10 or 10/10. One critic gave it a 6/5. Absolutely incredible, but I didn't expect anything less. My copy arrives in a few hours, I'm pretty excited!
Went in without seeing too many spoilers and even still I loved every second of it. From the smaller worlds to the bigger each still felt so polished.

The music is pretty top notch with some notable themes for me being Steam Gardens & Lost Kingdom.

Currently in the post-game and its still going good with plenty of new Moons to collect as well as some secret kingdoms to unlock.

I'll hopefully have it 100% by Xmas but then again that makes me sad as the game is just so good I want more of it but not in the form of DLC.
They did two Mario Galaxy games on one system which was a first for the 3D Mario games so I think they could easily do it again granted as long as it builds on the solid game that is Super Mario Odyssey.

I have not felt this fuzzy for a game pretty much since I got Galaxy 1 which was my first steps into the Mario series.
Also loving the game a lot. Might in fact be my new favorite 3D Mario game (still need some time away from the game before I can say that for sure, though). I just love how much there is to discover. So many moons and other secrets in every little corner of the game, and most of the capture abilities are also pretty neat. Not to mention that it's the first main line Mario game with a story I've actually been invested in. You know, that's not to say that it was particularly deep, complex or long, just that it felt like there was actually something at stake this time and that I really wanted to see how it ends and thus completeld the main story quickly. I wasn't disappointed. Almost everything about the end-game was amazing (sure, the game wasn't particularly difficult, but that really isn't its point to begin with - even less so than it was the point of previous 3D Mario games). Now I'm going for the 100%, and boy, there's still so much to discover. In some levels I had already collected around fifty or more moons just during my main playthrough and am still nowhere near completing them (naturally the more moons you've found, the longer it takes to find any undiscovered ones). Then there are also levels that I've barely scratched the surface of during my main playthrough, trying to complete the story, so returning there will actually be like discovering them for the first time. To be honest, my "post Mario depression" was almost about to kick in already (I know "depression" is exaggerated, but I do usually feel some kind of "emptiness" for a short time after completing a good 3D Mario game). However, I'm still spending so much time on each individual level trying to find every last moon that I don't think I'll be done with the game for quite a bit. That's a good thing. It's really rare for me that, after completing a game, I still have so much fun that I don't want to stop playing for quite a while. Heck, Super Mario Odyssey is that one game I absolutely want to see some DLC for (well, a sequel would be just as fine, but, you know, just give me anything as long as it's this good).

In other words: Super Mario Odyssey is that one game that absolutely justifies buying a Switch for, and if the console wasn't already difficult to find before, I wonder what it'll look like now.
Feel free to visit my website/blog - it's updated rarely, but it looks pretty cool!
I'm not that interested in that game. Ridiculously easy, it's a collecting game, quite repetitive. Some stupid stuff too (I've seen a section that is like 15 minutes long, no checkpoint, with some very BS stuff inside. And I don't even talk about all the invisble blocks you have to find).
Some stuff don't go with the Mario world either IMO.

Overall, looks ok, it's cute and everything, but I wouldn't buy it.

Plus, about the perfect reviews: I never trust a media putting the highest possible grade. It would be like saying it's the best game ever, that nothing will ever be better, and that it is absolutely flawless. Which is purely unrealistic.

How can you even determine that without playing it before? Those are things that videos (or even reviews or other opinions) can't really convey, so you'd have to play it for yourself before you can even say that.

It's true that review scores are bollocks - they convey pretty much no meaning and you actually have to read the reviews before you know anything about the game - but the reasoning here is kinda questionable. If 100% isn't a score that should ever be given, why even have a scale from 0 to 100? Just have the scale end at 90. But wait, when you do that, suddenly 90 becomes a perfect score, so we didn't really fix the problem. So I guess we keep the 0 to 100 scale, but are only allowed to use scores up to, let's say, 90, because "games can't be perfect"? Yeah, whatever way we look at it, it just doesn't make too much sense. The only reason one can even say that is because of the wrong assumption that review scores somehow measured the "perfectness" or even the the "quality" of a game. That's simply not the case, which is also why the concept of "evening out review scores" is kinda hilarious (have seen people do that for Super Mario Odyssey, and gotta admit, I've been guilty of the same thing in the past). Review scores don't measure how good a game is, they just measure how much people liked a game, with 100 meaning "I really loved the game and can't find anything to complain about" and 0 meaning "I can't find anything I liked about the game". That's also why a game being easy doesn't necessarily have to mean a score below 100. If a game being too easy didn't take anything away from someone's enjoyment of a game, a score of 100 is still perfectly valid to give.

And my reasoning about scores is dumb?! LolIf you consider that something can be pure perfection and have NO flaw (and by flaw, I mean the tiniest flaw ever), well then... enjoy the 100% scores.
A review isn't a feeling expressed at a given moment, it's an analyze of what's good and what's not that good. Never ever a game has been perfect.

No need to play the game to see it's ridiculously easy. The only difficulty comes from camera issues and finding the stuff that are hidden without clues.
