Original SMW 1989 Yoshi's sprites

Hi, everybody!

Does someone saw this news? I never saw this Yoshi's sprite before... There are further details in the link below:

https://gonintendo.com/stories/291462-original-super-mario-world-sprite-sheets-show-a-very-different-lo

i'll be grateful if someone find more details, and maybe, more sprites pics! :)

Wow, this is really neat! I wonder if Yoshi would still be popular with that design? That beak-like mouth looks really weird, but I guess a giant nose is just as weird. Unlike the final SMW, beta Yoshi doesn't have tan arms, so he's not all bad.

Here's my recreation of beta Baby Yoshi:

It's difficult to tell exactly where the darker shading pixels are, and I'm not sure if the lightest shade of green is used at all. I'll do the adult Yoshi next.
That's great! You can send me your custom ROM with this sprites? I was going to ask if someone made a custom ROM with it, but you already on the way! :)
I can't tell you with ensure about this darker shades, too... I suppose It only can be a early sprite design...

But your rom have these other sprites, too? I wonder the day we will put the hands in this original 1989 ROM...

Don't expect this to happen. Since Nintendo is a pretty huge company and doesn't really like to release prototypes or other stuff from their franchises it's a very small chance to ever see a fully playable prototype of the original Super Mario World ROM. All builds could possibly have been wiped off the hard drive, or has turned into the final Super Mario World we know today. Keep in mind that this is just speculation. Maybe it still exists, but they don't know where it is like with the original Sonic the Hedgehog 1990 Tokyo Toy Show prototype.

Also YYCHR and Lunar Magic are a thing so it can easily be used in your hack without asking for a ROM.

Also I really love the remade Hammer Bro and Chain Chomp even though one of the Hammer Bro frames looks like he's wearing shoes.
I mean, I've submitted a gfx33 with the grown-up beta yoshi so there's that.

I didn't make the blobby things be baby yoshi though because I wasn't super sure they were actually supposed to be baby yoshi while working on that last night.

It's nice to see just how long those orange platforms were actually in the game. Turns out, actually pretty damn long.

Ah, I guess you beat me to it. I'm actually not 100% sure either if that's the beta baby Yoshi. I'm only guessing based on how the graphics fit the final baby Yoshi + the white underbelly being a Yoshi-looking design feature.
Well this is neat to see after all these years. I was confused as to what the blob-like creatures were at first but yea Baby Yoshi seems likely.

The article mentioned they talked about Yoshi's Island as well. Wonder what kind of details they spilled.
What in the sweet mother of christ is 30A - 30F & 31A - 31F?

Edit: ↓ It has, like, stick legs though.
Layout by RanAS, modified by yours truly.

^Probably a podoboo or a fire flower, maybe a panser. It's hard to tell.

And lol and that birdface Yoshi. Imagine if that design had stayed and became the basis for modern Yoshi.
also expect fanart of that

Sure! About the possibility of the original ROM be definitivelly erased from history, I can have a little piece of hope, and the reason why is this sprite pic taken we never seen before... Maybe they still have the original ROM, and maybe someone from the development team has it, however, as you said, This kind of content is pretty hard to leak... Imagine the extent of sprites and contents we could have if someone spread it... hahahaha

There's another thing who caught my attention.. This green round-shaped blocks, alongside the square block and triangle block, all greens...
First party Nintendo prototypes being found, especially one from this early in development, is like a one and a million chance. We should be thankful that they even decided to show us this in the first place. Aside from something like this video where Rare showed new footage from prototype builds of Banjo-Kazooie, it's the most we can get next to them straight up releasing the ROM or making it playable somehow which would probably never happen.

Anyway, this is really interesting! Seems like these early sprites can easily be recreated to be put into the final game.
While finding a ROM of the prototype might be out of the question, I definitely think that with a little more push, we could get Nintendo to release more images of these development sprite sheets for SMW at the very least.

If they have photographs of this lying around, I'm sure they have more.

We would just need to get into contact with those guys from the interview and ask them. It couldn't hurt.
I agree plenty! If we could get more of these pictures, we could improve and put more original design sprites in our SMW beta, making it more beautiful graphically and faithful with the original with the earlier version of our beloved game ^^
Maybe this development team is available for a interview? We have a issue of contact them, too...
This reminds me of when sega released the sonic 2 time travel theory stuff back in May. Good find though to be honest I much prefer the final yoshi design.
I just now came across a snippet of the interview with Shigefumi Hino (Yoshi's character designer) regading Yoshi's old design. And holy crap, MatPat was right. Mario's hand motion was actually meant to be a punch!
i always saw it as a punch

i mean its obvious when you look at the tile:

its a closed fist/hand. what else could it be?

#smrpg{mlem}
Slime Babby is friend

beta yoshi must be purged with fire
exterminatus

Also Ninty has sent DMCAs to romsites just to take down their 1st party IPs' roms
Don't expect them to allow protos to leak like with Traveller's Tales, SEGA, and so on lol

Unused enemy? Reminds me of SML1's weird enemy designs.

I don't know if this is just that "not having something makes you want it more" thing talking (see: people unironically wanting to play X-Treme) but god I wish that was the version of Sonic 2 we got.

Acid Trip Sonic is best Sonic.

Very interesting.

If I had to guess, they were probably just prototyping things out and trying stuff. Someone probably said

"draw a green dino thing that mario can ride"

and so it was done. Then everyone looked at it and said

"Yoshi looks like a f*uk-tard, redraw this sh*t"

and so it was redrawn better. There seemed to be plans for some Super Mario Bros 3 sprites such as the hammer bros and chain chomp, but apparently these were scrapped.

I would love to see someone take some modern Yoshi artwork and rework it to make it look like this design. Hahaha, it would look so stupid and Yoshi probably wouldn't be anyone's favorite character. Hahahah
