I decided to start this small side project to have a bit of fun (coding powerups again isn't that fun sometimes) and started doing this small hack which is clearly not inspired by Super Mario Odyssey for Nintendo Switch.

Some stuff regarding this:
- I'll aim to get this in a playable state before October.
- I'm mostly done with sprites up to Vanilla dome (some of them are missing like wall following sprites and line guides). And yeah, I'm doing them in world order.
- I also have plans for multiplayer, but that will come at a later date.
- I'll release the source ASM on GitHub once this is completed, but it's up to you if you want to deal with it (it's completely unoptimized and uncommented).

As only suggestion I could give, maybe try avoiding the fact that the player can litterally fly with some enemies, skipping whole levels, lol.

This hack looks cool. Mario can throw his hat and jump on it, I like that. But if Mario can control sprites and skips all the levels, that's to easy. You should add it into a powerups.

Looks pretty cool, this definitely adds many new ways to play the original SMW levels, although I'm pretty sure some people around here might want it for something else.

I've thought about balancing everything to make ir more fair, but it doesn't seem that fun to play. Also, giving ground interaction to some sprites is more trouble than worth, especially if they weren't meant to have ground interaction at all.

The most fun factor from this hack will be the cooperative mode, since it may remind some of you to this other hack made by cyphermur9t, but I'd like to first finish the 1 player mode, so I will have every sprite behavior done and it would be matter of adapting my code to control sprites with the second controller.

In the end, this hack will use vanilla SMW as a base because I suck at making levels and I don't want to delay this to make levels. I'm also lazy to include custom sprite support, since they don't even use the same sprite tables for some stuff and that might cause problems.

find it ironic that the odyssey gimmick is making its way into fangames and hacks around the internet even though the game itself isn't even out

this announcement hit me like a bus while i was scrolling through smwc in class. this is amazing work. now go cap bowser because he cant do shit about it

Are you going to keep the rom unlocked so people can make their own levels eventually, or will it be a vanilla-only-experience(C)?

Ok I think I literally shit my pants when you jump into the Rex, because I thought this was a joke until then. The hat gimmick alone is amazing.

"Cappy but in SMW" is pretty much this hack's entire point.
Reducing him to a powerup to prevent cheating would be counter-intuitive, especially when LX5 jokingly encourages that in the trailer.

Small update: The trailer has over 5000 views.

Honestly, I never expected it to be that popular. Let alone that it's just a trailer, not the release video. I'm happy.

As for the release date, I think I'll change it. I'll do another video before this weekend explaining the situation.
Nice gimmick LX5, but you forget a tiny detail:
You forgot the mustache.
In Super Mario Odyssey When Mario possess an enemy using cappy, it's use a mustache.
Is it necessary?
It requires me to do more coding and test it with each sprite, also adjust the position manually.

Probably I won't add it.
Cool idea in theory and I can see that a lot of ingenuity went into this, but in practice, I don't think it would make for a very good hack.

You possess a sprite ...then what? It's not like many of the SMW sprites have much to offer in terms of abilities.
