e: shit, Hook's right. There's no way I can design what I've been thinking without at least proper ledge tiles. I'd like to ask another question then:

Can I make a grassland/castle/whatever level and put a switch chamber at the end? Kinda like TSRPR Kola Kingdom Quest does.

If you don't have any reason for doing this, don't do it. It's technically allowed but it might get it cut from the compilation once again, depending on how we want to handle them. That and if more than 4 levels do this we obviously will have to cut at least something.
This is a contest first and a collaboration second, so we won't limit any levels for the collaboration's sake, but if it ends up incompatible due to edge cases like this we can't do much about it.

If your reason is to make the player play through the same level again but this time with a switch pressed, then I suppose go ahead but that concept isn't really that new or exciting and will likely cost you in judging for level length (if it stretches out too far) and repetitiveness (if you don't have some super special gimmick on top of that utilizing the changes).

Is #lm{music} allowed(both settings in that window)?

Yes.

Another question, will the compilation have the counterbreak patches? Or do I just have to create powerup filter manually?

No clue yet. Don't design your level with the collaboration in mind.

Can we use the unused bouncing turnblock? I know its bounce sprite is glitched, but it could be useful. :-)

Sure, the bounce sprite being a note block doesn't seem glitchy to me as much as it's just a "note block in disguise" really.
Just make sure not to actually have glitched tiles appear.

Should we specify, either in a .txt in the submission .zip or in our submission posts, whether or not the level has a secret exit? I went ahead and made a note of my level having one in my post.

Yes please.
That's a thing we forgot, I'll add it to the rules thread.

Well, what I did isn't anywhere close to being an elevator...
Basically, there's a section of floor that follows you through the level.
I hope it's not against the rules, because I think it's kinda neat!

As long as it doesn't lead to some kind of super janky glitchiness, that is fine. This kind of setup leads to glitches and issues a lot though, so you might want to play it safe lest the judges might nuke you for it.

Would Anyone Like To Work With Me On This Contest? I've Decided To Work On A Forest Level And I Can't Work On This Alone. #w{:<}
I gotta stop reading these very old forums... they are really making me paranoid...
Would it be a good idea to add a Bowser/Koopaling boss battle to a castle level or would that just be unnecessary and tedious?

Don't do Bowser, anything else is up to you and depends on your level!
I say don't do Bowser because Bowser at this point is more tedious than anything else for most players.

I'm looking forward to play the compilation hack later.

I consider that nowadays, purely Vanilla is kinda bland.
But since many old hacks were like that, and were good, it makes me wonder if maybe thanks to this contest, people can make it fresh again.

I mean, the Vanilla contest before was always pushing itself slowly, but it got to a point where it wasn't really Vanilla anymore.
So I guess people who work on this contest might do just that.

I'm really curious to what might happen now, as so many limitations makes people think even more out of the box to stand out somehow.

(Or at least I think so).
Хуй войне!

I have a feeling these sort of things aren't allowed, but are vines eating the block directly above it or mushroom scales eating any blocks above/below it considered glitches?
Yes to both. Don't do those!

I have a little question regarding Sprite Memory: Are we allowed to change it if we want to? Or is that also off-limits?
I play forum games and draw furries. I'm mostly active on Discord and Twitter.

Yes, you can.
I have to ask. Can you change the "act as" settings of tiles? You know make one tile act like another.
You can't, editing the map16 is against the rules.
@leod: Okay, great! I can use the bouncing turnblock! But what glitched tiles are you talking about? The P-Switch bounce sprite isn't gonna cause any glitched graphics to spawn on the screen.

And how can we have Grinders and chainsaws together in a level without Super GFX Bypass?! I don't see why Erik's not letting us!

My Discord server. It has a lot of archived ASM stuff, so check that out!

@MasterSkodwarde because it's Pure... err, I meant Old-School level design contest. You can use bypass in VLDC.

Is changing the time to 999 or adding the "force time limit to reset to..." allowed?

Don't ask why.
I know this is a pure VLDC, but I still don't understand. Is SGFXB a hijack or something?

I'm using it in my pure vanilla hack because I don't think it matters that much and I wanna use some pure vanilla tilesets with other pure vanilla tilesets, but still. I can live without SGFXB.

I was only curious

The definition of "pure vanilla" gets really problematic and what can be even defined as "pure" (technically, not even level design is really vanilla).
The GFX Bypass is one of the lesser vanilla stuff, though. After all, it is called "Bypass" for a reason and such requires an external hijack to use it.
This is the first time I believe that I really participate in a contest that is not Kaizo. My level is finished and I think it's okay.

I already asked that (the #lm{music} button) and its allowed.

Finished my level BTW, hopefully its not too hard.

You can't, and that is the point of the contest. Stop asking why things are forbidden, the answer will always be "because that is the point of this contest".
