Sonic Adventure

Sonic Adventure is game I have much nostalgia for. It was the first 3D game I'd had ever seen properly. Being in a poor family, I was stuck with the Super Nintendo up until the day I got the Dreamcast back in 1999. I remember distinctly coming home from school one day. My dad announced he bought a new Sega Dreamcast with Sonic Adventure. I was shocked and delighted. I could not believe my eyes.

We hooked it up. The Dreamcast swirl animation played, I squealed with utter delight. The FMV was totally badass. (Who would have thought a blue hedgehog could look cooler than an Italian plumber that takes shrooms & throws hammers?) I always remember the quote Sonic says when you pick him on the character select screen. He says "Let's get down!" And I couldn't agree more. I got to explore fully 3D environments for the first time in my life. There were beaches, theme parks, casinos, cities, temples, airships, ruins, ski resorts, you name it. It was an incredible experience. And to top it all off, you even had your own personal pets called a Chaos. Which you could take with you on the go, thanks to the VMU.

This game is a masterpiece, I love it. I hope you people at SMWCentral appreciate the game as much as I do. Please feel free to share your own experiences.

Oh sorry!

It's been over 17 years. My memory must be a bit rusty.

What are your experiences with the game? I'd love to hear them.
I used to play SA1 a ton as a kid, but as I grew up I realized that the game aged pretty poorly.

Amy's entire scenario feels very lacking, both gameplay and storywise.

Big is really just there to advertise the fishing controller (I can get through his stages super easily but the reeling aspect does feel a bit janky???), his scenario has no effect on the plot outside of other characters chasing after Froggy (who could just be replaced with the red emerald he ate tbqh). And I say this as someone who actually likes Big lol

Although, despite the game feeling a bit put together with duct tape and staples, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Gamma are all pretty fun though (Gamma's stages never really do anything much with the TPS mechanics, which is a shame), and Gamma's story was the only time I've actually enjoyed a remotely serious plot in Sonic (I cannot treat SatAM, the bad part of the Archie Comics, SA2, Shadow or 06 in any way other than how I treat The Room, sorry).

It's just a shame what happened to Knuckles and Gamma's playstyles in SA2, Knuckles got turned into an RNG mess if you wanted an A rank (my method is just run around the stage, ignoring all hint monitors, hoping to get a signal in time for an Awesome or a Perfect, if I fail, I just reset the stage), while Gamma (Tails+Eggman) got turned into the clunkiest mech shooter I have ever played.

Story is okay, but the execution feels awkward at times (the Rashomon-style multiple PoVs, the visions/flashbacks).

The graphics didn't age well, but I'll give it a small break as it was both a launch title and rushed.
The minigames felt very unnecessary, especially Sky Chase 1&2 which is the most boring reuse of the Panzer Dragoon engine ever (having to go through both acts twice in a normal playthrough doesnt help). Sand Hill feels tacked on, while Twinkle Circuit and Hedgehog Hammer feel very tech demo-ish?

Props to the Chao Garden though. The SA1 DC one is super rudimentary compared to SA2 DC and the Gamecube iterations but they're always a fun little time waster, and it's a good way to encourage the player to replay their favorite stages. They shouldn't have made it mandatory to unlock Green Hill in SA2 though, the Chao are quite the timesink after all, and not everyone would be willing to spend ages just to unlock 3D GHZ.

It was part of my childhood but I can't really call it "good". Decent at best.
It's still leagues better than SA2 though lmaooooooo

Thank you for sharing your thoughts!
It's interesting to see how you don't let nostalgia blind you from the game's flaws. It's something I'm probably blinded by myself. I'm also actually sad to hear they made the second game worst from what you described.

except this game isn't actually compatible with the fishing controller. the explanation the devs gave is that he was supposed to break up the pace of the game, but it smells

also the game is dated af, even the gamecube version
People don't seem to be as fond of the game as I.
A yay for the guy whose SA2B playfile passed 300 hours
Yeah, these games were awesome, both of them. Especially the second one, but well, from what you all say it looks like that's mainly nostalgia on my part...
Really, one of the biggest mysteries of modern Sonic games has to be why they don't include Chao Gardens again, I mean they were by far the best part about the games, added tons of replay value and everyone loved them.

It's a mystery to us all. A modernized Choa Garden would be way cooler than them trying to recapture the old school Sonic feel.
My SA experience is mostly limited to the DX port, which I played to death as a kid. At the time, I really enjoyed it, but now I basically share lion's opinion towards: it's still fun (parts anyway) but it's aged badly and is really rough and dated.

The stages, for the most part, are still pretty good, but the hub world is just awful and the generic, anime-esque NPCs clash horribly with the main characters. Sonic's path is the only really good part of the game, IMO. The others have fun gameplay and levels, but are just too short (except Big, who is just lame and utterly pointless.)
