Mario's Revenge on Kaizo

Kaizo

Now that I actually have something significant to show, it's time to make a thread about this hack.

This is my current kaizo project, and the plot I chose is pretty much the same as the plot in Sokobansolver's "Mario vs. the Fourth Wall", where Mario is fed up with all the kaizo hacks and goes on a quest to kill the hack creator (me).

I haven't wanted to make another kaizo hack unless I'm creating something that I feel is unlike any hack I've made in the past. I'm excited to work on this one because I already have many ideas planned for future levels that I think bring something new to the table.
There will be 13 or 14 stages, depending on my mood, and I'm planning to make this hack more about platforming and enemy dodging than puzzles and intricate obstacles (note: "planning"). The levels are also going to be much shorter and easier than those in my last hack, Mario is Screwed; I don't think I can make another hack like that again without losing my mind.

What I've done in this hack so far:
-I disabled screen scrolling using the L/R keys (I always do this)
-I disabled spin jumping
-I inserted the wall kick patch

The video for stage 1 is already up. It's pretty much a warm-up level, nothing too fancy.

Videos:
Stage 1
Stage 2
Stage 3
Stage 4
Stage 5
Stage 6
Stage 7

(if i don't update this after uploading a video then yell at me for being forgetful)

Peeks at what I'm planning for future levels will come later. I'll leave a few screenshots here. The screenshots of stage 1 are the same ones I posted in the screenshots & videos thread.

My lazy overworld. There's a possibility I'll make a different one later, but that's unlikely because I suck at making overworlds.

Stage 1: Son of a Beach!

Stage 2: Generic Grassland

Those grey blocks are Erik557's Reflecting Projectile Block. You probably won't see them much outside this level because there aren't many extended sprites that work well with it.

that's all for now stick around dudes
This is an engaging level as you always do. I don't like the palette of the poison mushroom though - I'm actually more used to it being colored some shade of purple as it usually does. And can't you wallkick against the pipe once you come out of it while waiting for the second mushroom?

I hope you keep the good work up! Also, it's nice to watch a first level that's not just a generic grassland as most Mario games do~

Maybe it's coated with deadly radiation?
Not to give mixed signals but I don't really mind.

damnit need to get used to working w this patch
i added invisible note blocks

e: about the poison mushroom, making it green is the slightly easier palette edit since the colors i need are already there. i don't really care if it's blue.
Why would Mario start with you lol

Seriously though this looks really good (except for the default palettes in stage 2) so far. Looking forward to see where this hack goes.
already finished stage 2

i don't think i've ever had this much fun making a hack

e: i like the default palette :<

That explains why you're finishing your levels faster than before.

This is simple but cleverly designed, and I like how the reflecting projectiles were used. Raise the invisible note blocks by some tiles at the triangle part, cause at the current state the player can get past them if they come from the left and jump between the ceiling and the clouds.

Very nicely done Sixcorby! I like your use of sprites and such. Also great music choice.
Looks pretty good! I like the simplicity of it, good use of the patches. Is there a reason for the reflective blocks near the lava lotus?

the blocks push back the lotus' fire just enough to get in mario's way
stage 3: sixcorby's hair

i like disco shells ok? there's gonna be quite a few of em

the explosion sensitive blocks patch is what a good chunk of this level will be based around

gotta get the springboard
Classy stage name :okhand:

Seriously though, this level looks really good.

Chest hair, head hair, or hair in some other region?

is my head ofc

anyway here's my valentine's day gift (spoiler: it's stage 3)

i scrapped the puzzle from the last screenshot in my previous post because i wasn't really feelin it

stage 4: aquaphobia

this will be a water level where both jumping and carrying items are disabled (which means no swimming at all. the only way to go up is to bounce off of enemies)

If you washed your hair, this hack would have one less level.

And I must scream.

my vldc entry is currently taking priority over this so not much has gotten done

in the mean time enjoy this screenshot of the very beginning of the stage

stage 5: sup, bro?

there's gonna be more bros than just the hammer ones btw
so many bros

shell bro

fire bro & deadweight bro

the zidane bro is fun too. although i might not use it because it is kinda glitchy, and in the way where it might be difficult to create obstacles revolving around it.

introducing these in this stage. it's punchy the boxing glove. (i know it's ugly rn. i'll give it the brown used block graphics once i figure out how to make the sprite use sp1. editing the cfg file does nothing so it must be hardcoded in the asm file somewhere.)
