Is it too early to start sharing overworld ideas lol. After hearing Vivi might be creating a system which basically provides double overworld space, I've had some cool ideas tbh.

I've had some really cool Overworld Map idea too, at least, if the world theme is confirmed. I hope I can tell them to others and hope they can help me make my ideas a reality.

you can be sure we'll have a swiss map at least :^)
Just note that having double the overworld space doesn't mean that we'll use all of the overworlds.
But who doesn't want to use all?

I just got a crazy idea.

What if we used half of all the OW to make a regular VLDC OW, and the other to make a similar but actually different one, that'd be used after the player has beaten the game ? Kinda like the Special World Passed thing, but with more than palette changes.

It just might not be necessary. Depending on the number of levels, you might be stretching the number of levels per world pretty thin.

People probably wouldn't like their levels locked behind a wall that only a part of the playerbase will ever get access to. Same reason all paths are open from the start, basically!

Also I doubt a swiss world is gonna happen cause the levels don't actually share a theme, they'll just be put into the proper places they fit into (unless someone REALLY wants to do that and can find a way to make it not look like an inconsistent mess of an overworld!!).
Your layout has been removed.

I didn't say half of the levels should go to half of the entire OW. I was just saying that we could make a much more better "Special World Passed" thing with two OWs. each of these two OWs would contain all levels of course: they'd be duplicates of some sort.

Should I consider this a challenge ? #tb{^^}
I had the sneaky idea of using the entire second main map exclusively for the best world, and building an entire area of the map around each level's theme. Jury is out on if that would be more or less impressive than the last year's tho.

Assuming we have all of that space tho, I can see several world themes existing already (ordered in density of levels):

City [11] (The Death Star, Necropolis City S-10, Circus Caravansary, Bowel Relaxation, Wetsuit Columns, Swiss Star Factory, Midnight City, NEO ZÜRICH, Swiss Steamworks, Flashy Factory, Samario Level)

Grassland [9] (Spring Glitch, Note Block Athletic, The Night Garden, Roy's Airship, Vertigo, Spiny's Trees, Net So Fast, Area 51, Angel Cliffs 2.0)

Aesthetic/Abstract [7] (Empty, Absolute Frenzy, Mushroomwave, Room 1F0, Sweet Tooth, Abstract Road, *no name yet*)

Hounted [7] (Spooky Spire, (Ruins of Grassland)?, Spooky Step, Dead Flag Blues, GHOST TOWN, Umbral Waltz, Dark Cloud Castle)

Cave [7] (Swiss Chubby Koopas, Cave Escape 3, Perilous Pit, Hole of Mega Mole, CHURRASCADA™, Falling and Rising, Currently Unnamed Cave)

Desert/Rocky [6] (Swiss Ruins, Hmm.. the TRAIN is LATE!, GOLISOPOD, fuzz n saws summit, Sizzle-Rock Cliffs, (Mars Colonization??))

Mountain/Sky [6] (Stratus Stairway, Rapture, Athletic Chaos, Heavenly Forge, Melty Mountains, Flight Simulator)

Jungle/Forest? [4] (VERY DANGER LIFTS, Urban Jungle, Sunset Shadows, Swiss Hot Lava)

Ocean/Islands [3] (Koopa Troopa Beach, Dolphin Beach, Tower in the Gulf)

Music [3] (Starlight Symphony, Instruments Inc., Swiss Nazca)

The lonely ice level [1] (Gelid Hills)
Unknown [1] (Now look at this net)
Best World [1] (Hmm.. the TRAIN is LATE!) tbh

This is assuming all of the entries here are submitted, and not counting any best/worst placements. Plus, it's all entirely speculative and non official lol.

Still, city world hype. In fact, it looks like there are enough city levels here for a literal full sized city. I'm kinda blown away, even if I was expecting it (and the layer 2 gimmicks) this year =p.
Never though did I believe that city levels could outnumber grassland levels.

That's 66 levels so far, anyways.

(no switzerland smh, just put a flag next to the swiss levels tbh)

Oh, grow up. This meme wasn't funny the last 200 times you guys said it.

@Impetus: Not bad at all. I can totally predict there will be a Grassland/Forest, Mountain and/or Sky, Space, Abstract, Ice, Desert, Cave, Tropical, and City themes. It seems possible based on how each theme can fit into another.
Just so you know, I'm very active on the site anymore like I was before; I'm mainly on Discord now.
FP can't handle that swiss quality =.=

My level isn't themed around music btw, it just happens to have a part with a music staff. It's better off in the desert map. Seconding no switzerland map, it's much funnier when they're just scattered all over the overworld.
Nice to see some estimates of what worlds we're getting. That might make the process of selecting levels a lot faster actually (instead of giving them themes and making worlds later we could just have the predefined world themes and place the levels around them right away as we judge).
A reminder that we can't have the list ready until the judging is done due to best/worst worlds.

Also, I'm not sure if having an entire main map for the best world is a good idea. It wouldn't be quite as "impressive" if the best world was just a big map with 10 different themes and really spread out levels.

More like not hype, designing a city in SMW's map perspective sounds argh (also requires graphic skill) :<

What are you even talking about?
It's easily the best thing I've done
So why the empty numb?

do you like go out of your way to complain about things that have nothing to do with you or something?
you're the one that needs to grow up #wario{:whistle:}

e: I do like Mathos' idea. Make a wacky post-game version of the overworld you warp to after world X. Because I mean unless we get twice as many entries as last year we probably aren't going to need it lol (unless map creators just want to space out levels even more)
ask me if i give a f*ck...
To accommodate all the entries, we need the VLDC DLC.

VLDCX Afterbirth and then VLDCX Afterbirth +
Just depends on the pricing...

Anyway it's good to see less generic level themes/ideas in this contest and it's really impressive how far we push the limits on "Vanilla" hacking. Granted many levels look extremely custom.

Looking forward to seeing who will win and any surprise entries that have not been shown yet publicly.
The worlds in VLDC9 seemed kinda cramped. If we get the same number of entries (not to mention more!) as last year, I could see a few more submaps being used to make the worlds less cramped.

This is a really cool idea, but RIP whoever ends up making it tbh.

Actually of the same advice. I have an funny idea for them btw: they'd all have a Swiss flag next to them as Impetus suggested, but a small Swiss man being in the process of planting one would be next to one of them. That'd make a nice detail imo.

I would lie if I said I didn't feel the same... now that Impetus has made a list, it seems we'll have to deal with lots of entries. I mean, we're at 66, but only a week after the start. I can't imagine how many there will be at the end of the submission period. #ab{o_o} My idea has a very high chance of simply not being possible to realize, but Impetus's seems okay. Two main maps would've been too much anyway imo. Using it for the best world might be epic if we exploit the concept correctly.

I have an idea for that, btw: what if we used the main map to make some sort of ascension to the best level ? Something like this...

...or maybe a straight stairway, or even something else. But the principal idea would be to make Mario go higher as the level's rank gets higher too. Eventually, if we place levels on pillars as in that concept sketch, maybe we could either use a "World X"-styled background, or make carvings on said pillars. IDK, my mind is overflowing with ideas.
Not a bad idea, Mathos. The theme of the Best world as Mario rises to the top ranks could be even based on the whole "Stairway to Heaven" sort of thing, where Mario goes up to the skies and reaches the level that won the gold prize. You know, clouds, Mario ascending to the top on those pillars and clouds or bridges, etc.

So, when you say I can't edit the original GFX, does that include editing Big Boo to have graphics from elsewhere in the game (like, say, turning him into a swarm of regular boos)?
I'm just here for VLDCX.
