I have no idea what to call the level, nor do I have any music for it, but I'll figure it out as I go along. Anyone have any ideas for music? I don't want to just use WL1's Train theme because the ports we have of it... one's not so great anymore, the other's meant for 8bit samples, so not really good for my purposes. I need something western-sounding! Something with a train whistle!

The rails are like Wario Land 1- touch them, you die. (It's invisible lava- the graphics are on layer 2, so they scroll independently of the train, and if any enemies touch them, they just...drop through. I'd like for them to just die, but lava death means an annoying lingering frame that really doesn't look right hanging in the middle of the air...) So be careful when jumping between cars!

I intend to use math platforms later, because come on, it's a train. Gotta have little spots where you have to use an unrelated cart to get across a gap. Yee haw.

Wow, really impressed by the look of this level! I'm really impressed you managed to recreate a train theme with vanilla gfx. Hopefully the design is good too, I can't really tell much from the screenshots but I would probably not hide blue kicking koopas behind FG, as that can be annoying.
Looks really neat & creative! I really like train levels in games. #tb{:D} Though I will say that the background gradient could use some work. Currently it doesn't transition smoothly at all.

Hi.
That looks so cool - throw that Fast BG Scroll generator in there and you'll have a really authentic looking train.
Whoa, you were talking with me about your plans for making a train based level, but that actually looks really superb, much more than I have thought considering the vanilla and screen size limitations. Excellent job so far! I hope you can make something cool from it and you might go pretty well.

As for the music, I see you got tired from the Wario themes so what about instead... Booster themes?! Yeah, that one from SMRPG. I thought in the second one from his tower, this one to be specific. Of course, currently it has pretty much nothing to do with train, but who knows if you can get someone to make a cool western remix of it or get something similar?

But heh, I hope you find a great song for this likely great level. Looking forward for more!

port this for the music tbh

Jokes aside this looks FANTASTIC aesthetically. Probably my fav out of all the ones I've seen so far.
If your level is fast-paced and not too long, try "Mario Party - Faster Than All!". It totally sounds like a wacky western train!
Yeah, that song definitely fits well UTF but unfortunately it's too short for a level. Only 25 seconds and it already loops.

This level is going to be the best world level!

Nice TheRunawayGuys reference, Nimono ol' pal. You should keep that name "The Train is Late".

Very creative western-themed desert level! Very, very promising!
Just so you know, I'm very active on the site anymore like I was before; I'm mainly on Discord now.
Level looks really great, but why the oversized screenshots?

Unfortunately, it doesn't work without stepping on sprite C1, activating it. I really do not want to use that sprite just to have it be annoyingly "there" through the entire level, and no one wants it patched to not need that sprite because that doesn't count as a "fix". So right now I just have the BG at variable scrolling speed, it's the closest I can get.

EDIT: Correction- in autoscroll, Fast BG Scroll NEVER works. I don't know why, it just doesn't. Not even with sprite C1 active.

I KNOW, RIGHT? D: I can't figure out how to make it smooth at ALL with just 4 colors to work with for the gradient... It's why I pretty much gave up on that. Yeah, I could use SMW's built-in gradient maker, but that's not realistic for a sunset. I tried!

Don't worry it's not too big of an issue. The train will pretty much be what everyone's eyes are focusing on.

Hi.
Love the idea and the atmosphere is on point, but the background with all the rock formations in the front and cacti in the back makes it really clustered and hard to make stuff out.

And yeah imo the gradient could be better lel

You could try those checkerboard pattern tiles. That are also used by layer 3 water.

I'd really rather not use those, personally, I just need to figure out the colors so it all melds well

May I make a bold suggestion?

Something like this, perhaps?

If you really wanna be cool, you can throw the whole BG onto layer 3 so that you can use the fast scroll setting, then like put the sun on layer 2. Just a thought, it looks good!
